Conformal Radiation Therapy for Pediatric Patients with Low-Grade Glioma: Results from the Children\u27s Oncology Group Phase 2 Study ACNS0221
Purpose: To determine the rate of marginal relapse, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) in patients with pediatric low-grade glioma (PLGG) treated with conformal radiation therapy (CRT) with a clinical target volume (CTV) margin of 5 mm in the Children\u27s Oncology Group trial ACNS0221. Methods and Materials: Patients aged 3 to 21 years with unresectable progressive, recurrent, or residual PLGG were eligible for this study. Patients younger than 10 years were required to have received at least 1 chemotherapy course. Patients with neurofibromatosis type I were not eligible. All patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging-based planning and received 54 Gy CRT in 30 fractions with a 5-mm CTV margin. Results: Of 85 eligible patients (median age, 13.6 years) treated between March 2006 and December 2010, 14 were younger than 10 years and 36 received prior chemotherapy. Sixty-six had pilocytic astrocytoma, 15 had other histologic subtypes, and 4 had unbiopsied chiasmatic lesions. Events included 23 relapses (19 central, 4 distant, and no marginal) and 7 deaths. At a median follow-up of 5.15 years, 5-year PFS was 71% ± 6% and OS was 93% ± 4%. Male sex (P =.068) and large tumor size (P =.050) trended toward significance for association with decreased PFS. Age, histology, tumor location, time between diagnosis and study entry, and MIB-1 status were not associated with PFS. OS was negatively associated with male sex (P =.064), non-pilocytic astrocytoma histology (P =.010), and large tumor size (P =.0089). Conclusions: For patients with PLGG, CRT with a CTV margin of 5 mm yields an acceptable PFS and does not lead to a high rate of marginal relapse
Building an “old girls’ network” in academic science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
Over the last decade the University of Wisconsin (UW) System has repeatedly faced budget shortfalls. Reductions in state funding led to increased course loads, class sizes, and turnover of administrators and faculty, producing chronic low morale (e.g., Read 2016). Amidst this turmoil, senior women scientists from campuses across the UW System met annually to offer support, promote retention and achievement of individual members, and build a network of women who could enact systemic change on their individual campuses. The chapter describes the history and components of the 11-campus program, provides examples of the participants’ resiliency and resourcefulness, and identifies ways in which the women’s senior status and disciplinary skills led to effective change

The accounting profession is undergoing a transformation because of the explosion of the amount of financial data and information available to organisations, the demand for real-time access to information and the use of business analytics. The accountants of the future need to be qualified to address these challenges. This means that higher education accounting degree programs must adapt their curriculums and courses to leverage technology tools and practices to ensure that their accounting faculties are prepared to teach these courses. #Gaslighting
As the utilization of social media continues to integrate itself into domains of culture, livelihood, and worldviews, the following exposition aims to introduce how such integration may pose as a new realm of gaslighting that has yet to be discussed. The progressive conceptualization of gaslighting as a form of manipulation will aid in providing readers with an understanding of this idea through a systemic lens by first, explaining underlying reasons for manipulation as an all-inclusive concept. The value of explication will serve in identifying plausible reasons of manipulation which pertain to the concept of gaslighting within social media. Within this perspective, the features which define social media as a virtual form of connection are presented to exhibit how different elements of online communication support the multifaceted presence of gaslighting seen within social media. Such information allows for deeper exploration in demonstrating how the impacts of social media, which perpetuate gaslighting, propose relational implications for aspects of perception, connection, and validation. By developing this contemporary perspective on gaslighting, there is hope to inspire further consciousness, awareness, and recognition associated with the perceptions of self, others, and relationships with others that are influenced by aspects of social media and permit for the manipulation of reality. In doing so, the chance to enlighten others may provide new opportunities in contemplation when deliberating the inherent nature of face-to-face connections which excel in authenticity, validation, and appreciation, to the inner world of social media which warrants for gaslighting
The first evidence of intrinsic epidermal bioluminescence within ray-finned fishes in the linebelly swallower Pseudoscopelus sagamianus (Chiasmodontidae)
External and histological examination of the photophores of the linebelly swallower Pseudoscopelus sagamianus reveal three epidermal layers of cells that form the light-producing and light-transmitting components of the photophores. Photophores among the examined photophore tracts are not significantly different in structure but the presence of mucous cells in the superficial layers of the photophore suggest continued function of the epidermal photophore in contributing to the mucous coat. This is the first evidence of intrinsic bioluminescence in primarily epidermal photophores reported in ray-finned fishes
Evaluation of neurodynamic responses in women with frequent episodic tension type headache
Background: Current theories associated with the cause of tension type headache are mostly focused on muscle tissues. No study has investigated the presence of role of nerve tissues in this population. Objective: Our aim was to examine the responses to different mechanical provocation tests of the nerve tissues in women with tension type headache when compared to healthy women. Design: A case-control cross-sectional study. Methods: Differences in range of motion and sensory responses (intensity and location) during the Passive Straight-Leg Raise Test (SLR), Long Sitting Slump test (LSS) and Seated Slump test (SLT) were assessed in 32 women with frequent episodic tension type headache (FETTH) and 32 age-matched healthy women. Results: Women with FETTH demonstrated bilateral and significantly reduced range of motion in all tests (P \u3c 0.001) and also higher sensory responses in the LSS and SLT (both P \u3c 0.001), but not in the SLR (all P \u3e 0.422), compared to the healthy women. The location of sensory responses was also significantly different for the SLT (P \u3c 0.05). Conclusion: The current study observed generalized lower mechanical pain thresholds to different provocation tests of the nerve tissues in women with FETTH supporting the presence of heightened nerve sensitivity to mechanical stimuli in this population. Future trials should investigate the efficacy of neurodynamic techniques in the clinical evolution of TTH
Pierre Robin Sequence, from conception to realization
Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) comprises a combination of craniofacial defects, including micro/retrognathia, glossoptosis, and respiratory obstruction. Cleft palate is often associated with PRS, however it is not required for diagnosis. The diagnostic criteria for PRS is poorly defined with a large variation in phenotypic presentation. Multiple theories exist regarding the etiology and pathogenesis of PRS, including mechanical, neurological maturation, and rhombencephalic dysneurulation. PRS can be classified into isolated PRS, syndromic PRS, and associated PRS. Defining the classification can aid in determining a treatment plan. Management is largely dependent upon the infant\u27s phenotypic presentation and may require respiratory support with possible surgical intervention to maintain airway patency. Implications for the caregiver focus on identifying the PRS phenotype, obtaining a thorough prenatal history, developing a multidisciplinary approach to care, and ensuring growth and development are supported. Through thorough management positive outcomes are achievable in the infant with PRS
The adhesion modulation domain of Caenorhabditis elegans α-catenin regulates actin binding during morphogenesis
Maintaining tissue integrity during epidermal morphogenesis depends on α-catenin, which connects the cadherin complex to F-actin. We show that the adhesion modulation domain (AMD) of Caenorhabditis elegans HMP-1/α-catenin regulates its F-actin–binding activity and organization of junctional–proximal actin in vivo. Deleting the AMD increases F-actin binding in vitro and leads to excess actin recruitment to adherens junctions in vivo. Reducing actin binding through a compensatory mutation in the C-terminus leads to improved function. Based on the effects of phosphomimetic and nonphosphorylatable mutations, phosphorylation of S509, within the AMD, may regulate F-actin binding. Taken together, these data establish a novel role for the AMD in regulating the actin-binding ability of an α-catenin and its proper function during epithelial morphogenesis
