Creating a system of integrated support for general chemistry cohorts utilizing student-driven laboratory curriculum
The joy of science for many chemists mixes the thrill of discovery with the constancy of problem-solving. Interestingly, undergraduate laboratory curricula often replaces the excitement of experimentation with proper laboratory techniques and reproduction of values and concepts found in textbooks. Taking a red pen to content-laden laboratory design and returning to the simple excitement of experimental discovery requires a thoughtful process centered on methods for fostering student success. This student-driven model of laboratory instruction requires simplification of learning goals, real-time feedback, and scaffolded concept repetition through a triplicate model of experimentation with increasing complexity and rigor. By allowing students to independently investigate core chemical concepts through an open, experimental format we have realigned grades across introductory lecture and laboratory courses as well as increased student success in lecture creating a system of integrated student support
Appreciative inquiry - lessons learned from virtual teams
Technology continues to expand research opportunities and access to information previously constrained by resource limitations. Without effectively utilising technology, researchers and practitioners could be limiting their potential to impact positive change. This paper describes some learnings from a review of the current literature regarding the use of technology in appreciative inquiry (AI), as well as learnings from other fields in which technology has been used to bring people together in a virtual environment, and how technology can be applied to improve the richness of data to effectively impact change. This paper then describes some recommendations for AI researchers and practitioners, and identifies some additional areas for continued research in virtual AI studies
Ascetical Practice and Ignatian Pedagogy for Sustainability: Tools for Teaching Sustainable Living
Inspired by Laudato Sí, we outline an application of the Ignatian Pedagogy for Sustainability to our course, Sustainable Practice: The Examined Life. We describe the development of the course in the context a new undergraduate program in the College of Arts and Sciences at Creighton University. In the course, we draw from the notion of ascetical practice, an approach for students as they strive for incorporating more sustainable practices into their daily living. We concentrate on four domains of asceticism: attention, sustenance, materials, and energy. Additionally, we argue that mindfulness through meditation is a necessary activity for students pursuing sustainable practices and an examined life
Building Faculty Competence and Self-Efficacy for Using Z Space Virtual Reality (VR) Software in the Classroom
The environments of teaching and learning are changing as educational needs and technology advancements evolve. One of the newest technologies gaining momentum in healthcare education is virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR) that provides increased active learning opportunities by providing interaction. It has become imperative that faculty stay at the forefront of technology to educate the future care provider in navigating patient care. However, to capitalize on the advantages of using VR/AR technology software to enhance active learning, faculty need to know they exist, how they can use either and have confidence that they can use technology to enhance learning of today\u27s highly diverse and technology-savvy students. A literature review demonstrated a lack of confidence and knowledge by faculty on how to implement VR/AR technology software into the nursing curriculum. Further research reported that nursing faculty lacked time to research new technologies, lacked knowledge of technology use, not aware of best practices for the use of technologies, and lacked support by administration and peers. This project implemented an online educational module for nursing faculty focused on Z Space software learning. Measured levels of competence and self-efficacy were performed prior to and after the educational intervention. Data analyzed, demonstrated that both competence and self-efficacy improved on Z Space software as self-reported by faculty. Although this was a small sample size, it is recommended that nursing faculty participates in ongoing education on the use of VR technology software
Translating Ignatian Principles into Artful Pedagogies of Hope
The Jesuit Worldwide Learning (JWL) program offers transformational learning through institutional partnerships that grant academic degrees to students at the margins of society. Ignatian principles and pedagogy are applied within online coursework. Teaching anthropology within this diverse, intercultural learning environment required artful language and narrative approaches to create a trusting environment in which to discuss challenging concepts. The place of hope in students’ lives was underscored in this process that describes how teaching is a practice of accompaniment. Providing educational platforms and mentoring to students living in the margins requires an adapted online learning environment as well as a relational approach incorporating social mediation, radical presence and pedagogy. Social mediation in this context is understood in relation to transformational learning processes and how they are socially and culturally mediated. This exploratory narrative inquiry shows how technologies allow organizational collaborations as well as international university partnerships to connect students to online learning opportunities, informing future research endeavors and online learning initiatives
“It’s a Wrap”
For decades, medical providers have recognized the importance of temperature regulation in the delivery room, especially for the preterm infant (Fawcett, 2014). The goal of this quality improvement initiative was to improve neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission temperatures of preterm infants delivered at a hospital in Denver, Colorado, ranging in gestational age of 23-33 6/7 weeks by placing the infants in a polyethylene wrap (NeoWrap) immediately after birth.
A retrospective medical record review was performed to collect data on NICU admission temperatures for the historical control group. During the prospective phase, infants were placed in a NeoWrap from the neck down immediately after birth and their NICU admission temperature was recorded. Premature infants placed in a NeoWrap immediately after birth had increased mean admission temperatures when compared to infants not placed in a NeoWrap.
The outcome of this comparison revealed that polyethylene wraps used for preterm deliveries 23-33 6/7 weeks gestation led to a decrease in admission hypothermia in the NICU, demonstrating that NeoWraps are a non-invasive and effective intervention to assist in preventing hypothermia in infants delivered. The sampled t-test revealed that there was a slight increase in the mean admission temperature with the use of a NeoWrap. This study includes an exhaustive literature review along with retrospective and prospective data to support the continued use of NeoWraps in the delivery room to aid in preventing admission hypothermia in preterm infants
Disgust sensitivity and kosher food preferences among the non-Jewish population in the US
About 100,000 to private agencies to certify that their products meet kosher standards. Although kosher certification is ostensibly for the purpose of Jewish religious observance, the vast majority of people who buy kosher food are not Jewish. In this study, we examine the psychological drivers of these purchases among people who are not Jewish. Our study found that people with high levels of contamination disgust sensitivity were more likely to prefer kosher food, which is often marketed in a manner that implies that it has fewer contaminants. The effect of contamination disgust sensitivity on preference for kosher food was partially mediated by perceptions that kosher food rated highly on dimensions related to oral disgust (food rejection) rather than on dimensions related to moral disgust. Moderated mediation was significant for the factor of subjective knowledge, such that the mediation effect only occurred among participants who reported high levels of knowledge about kosher food. Strength of religious affiliation was a marginally significant covariate, as people who reported high levels of affiliation with organized religion had a greater preference for kosher food
Work-In-Progress: IoT Device Signature Validation
Fingerprinting is an important technique for identifying and characterizing devices on a network in a manner that is resistant to spoofing. Current works describe methods which are limited to identifying one particular component of a device. This paper begins to look at ways in which multiple disparate, but complementary, approaches can be used concurrently to develop a more complete hardware and software profile of network devices and their capabilities. Doing so is particularly important in heterogeneous Internet of Things networks. In this paper we propose a method for synthesizing existing fingerprinting methods based on existing procols and commonly available equipment to create a single consistent, validated, and spoof-resistant profile of network devices. Furthermore, we present and describe the architecture of a prototype system we have constructed which will be used for further study and future work
