    Omadacycline: A New Tetracycline Antibiotic

    Objective: To review the chemistry, pharmacology, microbiology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, clinical efficacy, tolerability, dosage, and administration of omadacycline, a new tetracycline antibiotic. Data Sources: A literature search through PubMed, Google Scholar, and clinicaltrials.gov was conducted (2008 to October 2018) using the search terms omadacycline and PTK-0796. Abstracts presented at recent conferences, prescribing information and information from the FDA and the manufacturer’s website were reviewed. Study Selection and Data Extraction: Preclinical data and published phase 1, 2, and 3 studies were evaluated. Data Synthesis: Omadacycline displays in vitro activity against a wide range of bacteria. Clinical trials have shown that omadacycline is noninferior to linezolid for the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) and noninferior to moxifloxacin for the treatment of community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP). A loading dose of 200 mg intravenously (IV) once or 100 mg IV twice or 450 mg orally once is recommended followed by a maintenance dose of 100 mg IV or 300 mg orally once daily. No dosage adjustment is needed in patients with renal or hepatic impairment. Omadacycline is well tolerated, with nausea being a common adverse effect, but is associated with food and drug interactions. Relevance to Patient Care and Clinical Practice: Omadacycline is active against staphylococci, including methicillin-resistant strains, and streptococci, including tetracycline-resistant strains, as well as atypical bacteria. Omadacycline provides clinicians with an additional parenteral and oral option for the treatment of adults with ABSSSI and CABP. Conclusion: Omadacycline is an alternative treatment option for ABSSSI and CABP

    Emergency preparedness through community cohesion: An integral approach to resilience

    This book is a revision of the author\u27s original doctoral thesis on emergency preparedness through community radio in North Indian villages into a widening array of possible reapplications in other community development fields. The author expands on the process of transforming emergency preparedness education through community media in rural North India and applies this to the development of community-prosperity, defined simply as human and planetary well-being, anywhere in the world. A new theoretical framework is presented which combines the pivotal Integral Worlds Approach developed by Lessem and Schieffer with Critical Theory, thus exploring a new way to envision and implement social change, leading to innovation and social transformation. This book introduces the term constructive resilience, which is a type of community-building that occurs alongside dominant societal structures that are either oppressive or ineffective. An evolving field of study and practice, it is emerging from the work of academics and community-builders who are members of the Bahá\u27í Faith. Bahá\u27í consultation, a process of inquiry and decision-making, is offered as a systematic and effective method of defining problems and enacting solutions and is examined in the context of emergency preparedness education and local capacity-building. With its integral development approach, its unique combination of themes and theoretical components, and integration with the Bahá\u27í Faith, as well as its interdisciplinary nature, this book will be invaluable reading for researchers in many fields. It will be of particular interest in university-based training programs in disaster management and the various disciplines of international community development, as well as practitioners in the areas of micro enterprise, disaster management, community development, rural communications, rural economics and emergency preparedness education

    Understanding the influence of text complexity and question type on reading outcomes

    In the current study, we examined how student characteristics and cognitive skills, differing levels of text complexity (cohesion, decoding, vocabulary, and syntax), and reading comprehension question types (literal, inferential, critical analysis, and reading strategy) affected different types of reading outcomes (multiple-choice reading comprehension questions, free recall, and oral reading fluency) in a sample of 181 native English-speaking adolescents (9 to 14.83 years). Results from item response theory one-parameter models and multilevel models suggested that different cognitive skills predicted performance across the three reading outcomes. After controlling for student characteristics and cognitive skills, text complexity negatively impacted reading outcomes, particularly oral reading fluency and free recall. Critical analysis and inferential questions emerged as the most difficult types of comprehension questions. The implications of these findings are discussed

    Team-based learning for immunology courses in allied health programs

    Immunology is now a major component of studies in human biology, with many diseases having immune system involvement. Because so many areas of study include aspects of immunological knowledge, how to teach and incorporate immunology must be evaluated and assessed at all levels of education including K-12, undergraduate, graduate, medical, and professional programs. Traditional teaching methods such as lecture have significant shortcomings which make them less appealing to students today who are more digitally inclined and demand more active and engaging learning environments. Herein, we describe and propose the use of the active learning model of Team-Based Learning (TBL) to incorporate immunology into medical and professional programs. TBL is defined as an evidence based collaborative learning strategy taught in a three-step cycle: pre-class preparation, in-class readiness assurance testing (RAT), and application-focused exercises. In TBL, students are assigned to 6–7 member teams. Students complete the in-class RAT individually followed by taking the RAT as a team (T-RAT). Following the RAT and T-RAT, the instructor can then provide immediate feedback on concepts that proved especially difficult. The remainder of class time is then spent with teams working case studies and applications relative to the instructional topic or disease. Teams decide the best outcome or answer for a given application and report their answers simultaneously in class, followed by a discussion facilitated by the instructor. Research indicates that students involved in active learning classes, such as those using TBL have significantly increased levels of student engagement and high performance on examinations. This review will highlight how to implement TBL into a professional program (medical, dental, nursing, or pharmacy), how to assess student performance and provide real world examples of case studies and applications

    Data mining-based competency model of innovation and entrepreneurship

    Data mining technology is a complex process of extracting or mining people\u27s interest from a large number of data. After more than 20 years of development, the research of data mining has made remarkable progress and has been applied to many fields. The process of entrepreneurship is not an individual entrepreneurial activity. It needs all kinds of resources and opportunities in the process of entrepreneurship. Combining with data mining technology, this paper constructs a competency model of innovative entrepreneurship team, regards entrepreneurship orientation as a critical dimension of entrepreneurial team competence, and adopts descriptive statistical analysis, regression analysis, and structural analysis. Cheng examines the factors that influence entrepreneurial performance. The study found that the eight dimensions of entrepreneurial team competency structure have a positive impact on entrepreneurial performance. Different entrepreneurial environments (dynamic, competitive, heterogeneous) and organizational factors (enterprise size, entrepreneurial spirit, and industry type) play different roles in regulating the relationship between entrepreneurial team competence and entrepreneurial performance. Controlling variables of entrepreneurial orientation and leadership behavior also have significant effects on entrepreneurial performance

    Financial mathematics, an interdisciplinary subject between mathematics and finance, is the application of mathematics in the financial field, which carries mainly out the quantitative analysis and research of financial issues by mathematical theories and methods. The idea of financial mathematics is adopted to study investment. First of all, an investment risk prediction model is designed based on cluster analysis-hybrid genetic algorithm and integrated improved support vector machine, and AdaBoost-support vector machine and clustering-AdaBoost support vector machine, the model is fully analyzed and verified. Combining the ways of more than half random sampling, the imbalance state is adjusted and reduced. Then the idea of integrated learning is used to cope further the data imbalance state and improve the classifier\u27s attention to a few classes. Finally, the algorithm is tested. The results show that this algorithm effectively reduces the cost of accidentalinjury

    Molecular Homology & the Ancient Genetic Toolkit: How Evolutionary Development Could Shape Your Next Doctor\u27s Appointment

    Homology, i.e. the biological pattern of “sameness,” is a pervasive facet of evolution at both the organismic and molecular levels of organization. While traditionally interpreted at the anatomical scale, shared molecular phenotypes across vastly divergent species hint at the presence of a deeply conserved, ancient genetic “toolkit” characteristic of the animal kingdom. Through careful examination of the nuanced homologues implicated in comparative embryology, evolutionary developmental biologists provide a holistic approach to understanding how homologous patterns of gene regulation translate to anatomical similarities among animal species. My summer research project in the Division of Developmental Biology at Cincinnati Children’s hospital aimed to investigate the molecular behavior of a novel vascular endothelial progenitor population in the zebrafish trunk vasculature. While this population of cells, named “PACs,” have only been identified in zebrafish, the presence of deeply homologous regulatory networks throughout the animal kingdom hints at the likelihood that these cells are also implicated in the circulatory development of other species. Through the lens of animal homology, my basic research investigating PAC proliferation and vascular differentiation in this model organism system has the potential to become translational in humans. In the quest to solve complex human pathologies, it seems as if evolutionary homology may be just as important as a doctor’s note
