The Impact of High-Fidelity Simulation Practice on the Perceived Confidence of Experienced ICU Nurses
the pre-evaluations however, not all scores improved between the three scenarios. In fact, four of the nine total scores collected remained the same. In a paired sample T-test the data indicated a positive correlation (p=.05) between pre and post scores for level of comfort with role and level of competence. No statistical significance was noted between the pre and post scores for level of confidence. Because the scores were improved between all the pre to post evaluations this lack of statistical significance is probably due to the small sample size. In the pilot study with six participants the data displayed statistical significance between all pre and post evaluations for improvement. These findings motivated a formal study. Although more research is needed, this small study did show simulated patient experiences can have a positive impact on a nurses’ self-perceptions improving their level of comfort and competence in caring for this population
An Ecological Framework for Transgender Inclusive Family Therapy
Despite current demands for transgender inclusive family therapy, family therapy training programs provide limited coursework on gender identity and inclusive practice. As a result, written resources are critical for family therapists wanting to provide inclusive services to transgender clients. In the interest of expanding available resources, this article uses an ecological framework to summarize research findings on the unique resiliency and difficulties experienced by transgender people. This was done in the interest of identifying implications for family therapy and distilling these implications into a collection of concrete suggestions for transgender inclusive family therapy practice. A conceptual model and a table of concrete suggestions are included at the end of the article
Adopting Population Health Frameworks in Physical Therapist Practice, Research, and Education: The Urgency of Now
Chronic, noncommunicable diseases have replaced acute, infectious diseases as the leading causes of global mortality and morbidity. Efforts among physical therapists to address noncommunicable diseases have primarily focused on the promotion of healthy behaviors among individual clients. However, the strongest predictors of chronic disease are tied to where we live, work, learn, and play, our families, and our communities. Population health frameworks can help us better understand the complex interrelations between individuals\u27 health condition and their social and physical environment over time and also inform the development of effective programs and policies that improve the health of individuals and communities. The objectives of this article are to: (1) define population health, prevention, and health promotion; (2) provide a current perspective on the utility of population health frameworks in physical therapy; and (3) identify opportunities for the expanded use of population health frameworks in physical therapist practice, research, and education
Are magnetic resonance imaging technologies crucial to our understanding of spinal conditions?
U SYNOPSIS: Persistent spinal (traumatic and nontraumatic) pain is common and contributes to high societal and personal costs globally. There is an acknowledged urgency for new and interdisciplinary approaches to the condition, and soft tissues, including skeletal muscles, the spinal cord, and the brain, are rightly receiving increased attention as important biological contributors. In reaction to the recent suspicion and questioned value of imaging-based findings, this paper serves to recognize the promise that the technological evolution of imaging techniques, and particularly magnetic resonance imaging, is allowing in characterizing previously less visible morphology. We emphasize the value of quantification and data analysis of several contributors in the biopsychosocial model for understanding spinal pain. Further, we highlight emerging evidence regarding the pathobiology of changes to muscle composition (eg, atrophy, fatty infiltration), as well as advancements in neuroim-aging and musculoskeletal imaging techniques (eg, fat-water imaging, functional magnetic resonance imaging, diffusion imaging, magnetization transfer imaging) for these important soft tissues. These noninvasive and objective data sources may complement known prognostic factors of poor recovery, patient self-report, diagnostic tests, and the “-omics” fields. When combined, advanced “big-data” analyses may assist in identifying associations previously not considered. Our clinical commentary is supported by empirical findings that may orient future efforts toward collaborative conversation, hypothesis generation, interdisciplinary research, and translation across a number of health fields. Our emphasis is that magnetic resonance imaging technologies and research are crucial to the advancement of our understanding of the complexities of spinal conditions

Latest clinical practice guidelines for seasonal influenza
Influenza is a common viral infection that occurs largely in the winter months. The Infectious Diseases Society of America recently released updated clinical practice guidelines for the management of seasonal influenza. Recommended antivirals for uncomplicated influenza in otherwise healthy patients in the outpatient setting include oral oseltamivir, inhaled zanamivir, and IV peramivir. Oseltamivir is preferred for hospitalized patients. Following publication of the guidelines, baloxavir marboxil was approved for outpatient treatment of uncomplicated influenza in persons aged 12 years and older. For prevention of influenza, recommended antivirals include oseltamivir and zanamivir. Pharmacists are in a key position to ensure that patients receive an annual influenza vaccine and to recommend appropriate antiviral therapy for the treatment and prophylaxis of influenza
Exploring sources of marketing knowledge for small business decision makers
Purpose of the Study. Where do small business owners and managers get the marketing knowledge they need to make marketing decisions? Using a marketing knowledge value chain framework, this research identifies the sources used by these marketing decision makers. Method/Design and Sample. An online survey of small business owners and managers (n = 226) was conducted. Using a constant sum response format, respondents were asked to report the degree to which they used 15 different information sources, including such things as formal education, trade publications, and on-the-job training. Various demographics were included to explore differences across groups. Results. On-the-job training was the most heavily weighted information source (25% weight), followed by colleagues, peers, and associates (18%). Even though 59% of the sample had taken a college-level marketing course at some point, formal education had a modest importance weight (13%). Academic journals received a very low weight (1%). Few differences in sources used were found across education level, size of organization, and revenue growth. Value to Marketing Educators. Recognizing that a large percentage of marketing graduates will work for small businesses, this study highlights the need for marketing faculty to make marketing knowledge creation and dissemination more relevant to small businesses. To accomplish this goal, more academic research can be targeted toward small business challenges, and client projects, internships, and case analyses can integrate more small businesses
