    Exploring pharmacy residency program director preference of pharmacy student organization membership and leadership involvement on residency candidate interview selection

    Introduction: Pharmacy student professional organization involvement and leadership are important qualifications of a pharmacy residency candidate. It is unknown if membership in specific student pharmacy organizations or types of leadership roles within these organizations are preferred by residency program directors (RPDs). The purpose of the study was to determine preference and importance of specific pharmacy student professional organization membership and leadership involvement when selecting residency candidates for an interview by RPDs. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted using an online survey. Pharmacy RPDs with involvement in reviewing applicants for interviews were included. RPDs ranked the importance and preference of specific student professional organization membership, breadth versus depth of involvement, and leadership position held on selecting candidates for an interview. Results: The survey was sent to 2084 RPDs. A total of 232 respondents met inclusion criteria and completed the survey. The majority (95.5%) of RPDs reported student membership as important, while 28.6% had preference for a specific organization. A total of 56.3% of RPDs reported student leadership as “very important” and 76.1% preferred depth over breadth of involvement. A total of 55.6% of RPDs preferred applicants with a high-level leadership position. Conclusions: Pharmacy student professional organization membership is important to RPDs when selecting residency candidates for an interview. The majority of RPDs have no preference for a specific organization, while 28.6% report a preference that affects interview selection. RPDs report leadership as important and place higher importance on depth versus breadth of involvement, with greater preference for a high-level leadership position

    The World at War: Three and a Half Decades of New York Times Conflict Coverage

    This quantitative content analysis uses 36 years of New York Times international news to understand how conflict coverage is presented to audiences in terms of quantity and geographic focus, whether conflict is covered because of its linkage to US interests, and whether the Times relies on its own personnel for first-hand coverage. Additionally, a contemporary history approach gauges how representative coverage is of conflicts in varying regions. Quantitative data reveal an imbalance in coverage; stories about low-income nations focused more on conflict and were more likely to link events to US interests. However, the volume of coverage of these countries was minimal and arguably failed to report some of the most severe internal crises in those nations. According to social construction of reality theorists, this imbalance and distortion can lead to audience perception that more conflict occurs in low-income nations than in other, more developed parts of the world

    Mediating effects of shoulder-arm exercise on the postoperative severity of symptoms and quality of life of women with breast cancer

    Background: The postoperative severity of symptoms among women with breast cancer affects their quality of life (QoL). Although it is recommended that performing shoulder-arm exercise 30 min/day can alleviate symptoms and improve the QoL, there is little research on the mediating effects of performing shoulder-arm exercise 30 min/day on the postoperative severity of symptoms and QoL among patients with breast cancer. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted 2 ~ 4 months after surgery on women diagnosed with breast cancer but with no distant metastasis and who had undergone breast cancer surgery for the first time. A structured questionnaire was employed which included a severity of symptoms scale, performing shoulder-arm exercise for 30 min/day, a QoL scale, demographic characteristics, and medical status. Results: In total, 117 women with breast cancer completed the survey. The severity of symptoms and performing shoulder-arm exercise 30 min/day separately affected the QoL (B = -0.447, standard error (SE) = 0.050, p \u3c 0.001; B = 15.666, SE = 4.542, p = 0.001, respectively). In model 3, performing shoulder-arm exercise for 30 min/day played a partial mediating role in the relationship of the severity of symptoms and QoL (R 2 = 0.51, F = 5.41, p \u3c 0.001). Conclusions: During 2 ~ 4 months after surgery, regular shoulder-arm exercise for 30 min/day could decrease the effect of the severity of symptoms on the QoL among women with breast cancer. Clinical healthcare providers may inform and educate patients as to the benefits of regular shoulder-arm exercise for 30 min/day

    Hot WHIM counterparts of FUV O VI absorbers: Evidence in the line-of-sight towards quasar 3C 273

    Aims. We explore the high spectral resolution X-ray data towards the quasar 3C 273 to search for signals of hot (∼106-7 K) X-ray-absorbing gas co-located with two established intergalactic far-ultraviolet (FUV) O VI absorbers. Methods. We analyze the soft X-ray band grating data of all XMM-Newton and Chandra instruments to search for the hot phase absorption lines at the FUV predicted redshifts. The viability of potential line detections is examined by adopting the constraints of a physically justified absorption model. The WHIM hypothesis is investigated with a complementary 3D galaxy distribution analysis and by detailed comparison of the measurement results to the WHIM properties in the EAGLE cosmological, hydrodynamical simulation. Results. At one of the examined FUV redshifts, z = 0.09017 ± 0.00003, we measured signals of two hot ion species, O※ VIII and Ne※ IX, with a 3.9σ combined significance level. While the absorption signal is only marginally detected in individual co-added spectra, considering the line features in all instruments collectively and assuming collisional equilibrium for absorbing gas, we were able to constrain the temperature (kT = 0.26 ± 0.03 keV) and the column density (NH × Z· /Z = 1.3-0.5+0.6 × 1019 cm-2) of the absorber. Thermal analysis indicates that FUV and X-ray absorption relate to different phases, with estimated temperatures, TFUV ≈ 3 × 105, and, TX-ray ≈ 3 × 106 K. These temperatures match the EAGLE predictions for WHIM at the FUV/X-ray measured Nion-ranges. We detected a large scale galactic filament crossing the sight-line at the redshift of the absorption, linking the absorption to this structure. Conclusions. This study provides observational insights into co-existing warm and hot gas within a WHIM filament and estimates the ratio of the hot and warm phases. Because the hot phase is thermally distinct from the O VI gas, the estimated baryon content of the absorber is increased, conveying the promise of X-ray follow-up studies of FUV detected WHIM in refining the picture of the missing baryons

    Cost-effectiveness of omalizumab for the treatment of moderate-to-severe uncontrolled allergic asthma in the United States

    Objective: Uncontrolled asthma is associated with considerable clinical burden and costs to payers and patients. US economic models evaluating biologics using data from clinical trials demonstrate high incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs), but the cost-effectiveness based on real-world treatment patterns is unknown. This analysis used real-world evidence to assess the cost-effectiveness of adding omalizumab to standard of care (SOC). Methods: A Markov model was applied to track patients’ health states in 2-week cycles, comparing costs and treatment effects of SOC alone versus SOC + omalizumab over a lifetime (US payer perspective). Outcomes included exacerbation events, life years, quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), total costs, and an ICER. Patient characteristics, exacerbations, patient-reported outcomes, and work productivity were derived from the real-world PROSPERO (Prospective Study to Evaluate Predictors of Clinical Effectiveness in Response to Omalizumab) study. Published literature informed mortality, exacerbation-related disutility, and unit costs. Sensitivity analyses assessed model robustness. Results: Over a lifetime horizon, omalizumab was associated with an increase of 2.0 QALYs at a cost of US148,319inpatientswithuncontrolledasthma(ICERofUS 148,319 in patients with uncontrolled asthma (ICER of 75,319/QALY gained) and a reduction in exacerbations of 6.0 events/patient. Accounting for responder status improved the ICER ($70,505/QALY); incorporating indirect costs further reduced the ICER. One-way and multivariate sensitivity analyses confirmed that the base case outcome was robust to variation in inputs. Conclusions: Based on real-world outcomes, omalizumab may be cost-effective for uncontrolled asthma from the US payer perspective. Including broader evidence on treatment discontinuation, caregiver burden, and oral corticosteroid reduction from real-world studies may better reflect the effects and value of omalizumab for all healthcare stakeholders

    Glass-coated ferromagnetic microwire-induced magnetic hyperthermia for in vitro cancer cell treatment

    Limitations in effectiveness and the invasive nature of current cancer treatment options emphasize the need for further clinical advancements. Among other approaches, targeted hyperthermia is as a new strategy aimed at targeting cancerous cells to improve the efficacy of radiotherapy or cytotoxic drugs. However, the testing of magnetic vehicles has mainly focused on the use of nanoparticles. In this work, Fe77B10Si10C3 glass-coated amorphous magnetic microwires were assessed for the first time as magnetic vehicles with high potential for the localized heating of osteosarcoma cells by means of an AC magnetic field. The results from the in vitro assays performed inside a microfluidic device demonstrated the ability of these magnetic microwires to induce malignant cell death. Exposing the system to different magnetic fields for less than 1 h provoked a reduction up to 89% of the osteosarcoma cell population, whereas healthy myoblastoma cells remained nearly unaffected. The proposed technology demonstrates in vitro the effectiveness of these microwires as vehicles for targeted magnetic hyperthermia
