Impact of COVID-19 infection on the cardiovascular system: An evidence-based analysis of risk factors and outcomes

    No full text
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), also known as COVID-19, emerged in late 2019 in Wuhan, China. The World Health Organization declared the virus a pandemic on March 11, 2020. Disease progression from COVID-19 infection has shown significant symptom manifestations within organ systems beyond the respiratory system. The literature has shown increasing evidence of cardiovascular involvement during disease course and an associated increase in mortality among infected patients. Although the understanding of this novel virus is continually evolving, it is currently proposed that the mechanism by which the SARS-CoV-2 virus contributes to cardiovascular manifestations involves the ACE2 transmembrane protein. The protein ACE2 is highly expressed in blood vessel pericytes, and infection can result in microvascular dysfunction and subsequent acute coronary syndromes. Complications involving the cardiovascular system include myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, shock, and heart failure. In this evidence-based review, we discuss risk factors of cardiovascular involvement in COVID-19 infection, pathophysiology of COVID-19-related cardiovascular infection, and injury, COVID-19 effects on the cardiovascular system and corresponding treatments, and hematologic effects of COVID-19 and COVID-19 in heart transplant patients. Clinicians managing COVID-19 patients should appreciate the potential cardiovascular effects related to the disease process

    Elizabeth Bishop’s queer lists

    No full text
Mid-20th-century American writer Elizabeth Bishop used lists in her notes to collect and select language for her poems and to think associatively on the page, blurring the worlds of the everyday and the literary. Bishop’s archival drafts, published poetry, and published prose evince a poetics of list-making that provided the writer with a means of achieving highly accurate descriptions that convey a spontaneous mind in motion, turn the catalog into a surrealist camera, and queer class boundaries via a fragmentary, nonhierarchical grammar. Ultimately, this project offers a new approach to queering the archive by suggesting a politics of preservation that foregrounds the ephemeral

An evaluation of the recovery of hope” program

    No full text
The Recovery of Hope program was initiated in 1981 to address the problem of couples entering marriage enrichment events whose distress levels indicated a need for therapy rather than enrichment. An ex post facto evaluation was conducted for this divorce prevention program, surveying 190 spouses who had been involved in the program prior to October 1984. Returns were obtained from 34 wives and 27 husbands on post-test and retrospective pre-test marital satisfaction measures, along with a variety of other items and demographic data. Program completion appeared to assist couples in either improving their relationship or in deciding to divorce, as opposed to continuing with an unsatisfactory marital relationship

2020 neonatal nurse practitioner workforce survey an executive summary

    No full text
Background: The National Association of Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (NANNP) partnered with the National Certification Corporation (NCC) to invite all NCC-certified neonatal nurse practitioners (NNPs) to participate in a national survey on NNP compensation, workforce environment, and satisfaction measures. Purpose: To understand the current NNP compensation, benefits, and workforce environment. Methods: An anonymous survey was sent to 6558 board-certified NNPs with 845 respondents. Results: Most of the survey respondents (92%) are in direct patient care (n = 804) with 83% (n=703) working full time (35 hours or more). Those NNPs with less than 5 years’ experience had a mean salary of 119,000peryearwhilemoreexperiencedNNPs(30plusyears)earnedameansalaryof119,000 per year while more experienced NNPs (30-plus years) earned a mean salary of 134,000 per year. Half of the NNPs (51%) report high satisfaction with their scope of practice and role in their organization. Distribution of NNPs throughout the workforce is suboptimal, with 67% of the administrators indicating they do not have enough NNPs. Implications for Practice and Research: The 2020 NANNP workforce survey collected information on NNP compensation, benefits, work environment, and experiences. It identified areas of satisfaction, such as compensation with bonuses and pay increases, and acknowledged areas needing improvement such as the lack of diversity within the profession. Utilizing the results of the survey will help create a more diverse, well-educated, and informed workforce to ensure culturally competent NNPs remain relevant within the healthcare system

Maderas Rainforest Conservancy: A One Health approach to conservation

    No full text
Maderas Rainforest Conservancy (MRC) was incorporated as a conservation nonprofit organization in 2008, and manages two sites where biological field courses have been offered since the 1990s: La Suerte Biological Research Station in Costa Rica, and Ometepe Biological Research Station in Nicaragua. MRC employs a One Health approach to conservation education, and can serve as a model for other biological field sites. The Nicaraguan Molina family, who owns the sites, partnered with primatologist Paul Garber in 1994 to develop a primate field course aimed at introducing university students to field research. Through using their land to further conservation education and research, the Molina family has preserved the forest and engaged the local communities near their sites. Eight graduate theses and 46 refereed publications have been completed since 2010 based on research undertaken at MRC sites. While primate field courses have been offered at least once annually since 1994 and remain popular, a range of other ecological courses are now additionally offered. MRC operates from a One Health perspective, engaging in forest restoration and ecological monitoring projects, and has gradually expanded community outreach initiatives. MRC now conducts regular medical and veterinary missions in the communities surrounding the research stations which provide health care to local people and limit the population growth of domestic animals, thereby increasing the survival of wild animals. MRC is also active in ESL-teaching and conservation education, and funds Proyecto Jade, which empowers local women to make and sell organic jewelry. Through these programs, MRC works to help the local communities live more sustainably with the environment around them. MRC\u27s support of research, commitment to education, medical and veterinary missions, and outreach initiatives to the local community all work together for the well-being of both the people and the environment, thus exemplifying the One Health perspective

Mediators of Gender Wage Disparity in MFT Academia

    No full text
Research on gender wage disparity in MFT academia finds women are consistently paid less than men faculty members. This study expands on previous research by testing if peer-reviewed publications and years in the field mediate the effect that faculty members\u27 gender has on salary. Our results support these factors as significant parallel mediators, meaning the effect of a faculty member’s gender on salary, happens byway of peer-reviewed publications and time in the field. No direct effect was found between gender and salary, indicating that gender differences in salary are best explained though indirect pathways of implicit gender bias rather than conscious acts of gender discrimination. Implications are discussed for university administrators wanting to address salary inequities in their MFT programs

“Did I Step On Your Moment?”: The Objectification Of The Marvel Cinematic UNIVERSE’S Black Widow

    Get PDF
The objectification of the Marvel Cinematic Universe character Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow has been present through the films she has been in. She is merely a sex symbol and seen as just the pretty face, when she leads the Avengers by combat fighting, espionage tactics, and hacking into computers. By employing film theorist Laura Mulvey’s the Male Gaze Theory, Hugo Ingrasci’s theory of the antihero trope, Historian Barbara Hales’ Theory of the femme fatale in film noir, author Michael Manahan’s concepts of the antihero and societal implications, and Director Joey Soloway’s notion of the Female Gaze theory we are to examine the character Black Widow from the Marvel Cinematic Universe through seven Marvel films. Additionally, this research includes interviews, outside source websites, and film posters. Each research section examines the mentioned theories by dissecting each movie to focus on the theory and film instead of the whole movie and theories included. Through these examples of the Male Gaze theory there were prevalent instances of Black Widow that display Mulvey’s theories. Examples of the camera’s angle direction, the dialogue between male and female characters, and the film posters that objectify the Marvel Cinematic Universe character. The character Black Widow visibly shows the femme fatale trope by displaying examples from the film noir genre, spy movies, and Barbara Hales’ results of the femme fatale in film noir of the 1940-50s from certain scenes of certain movies. After evaluating Hugo J. Ingrasci’s antihero trope, the character Black Widow exhibits traits of an antihero trope in multiple Marvel films. In Michael Manahan’s concept of writing an antihero, the character Black Widow is seen as the antihero when it comes to injustice versus justice situations in society and determining her alliance in Captain America: Civil War. The intention of the antihero is to set apart from this view of Black Widow as an object and view the character. However, through the utilization of Director Joey Soloway’s 5 theory of the Female Gaze Theory they dismantle the Male Gaze Theory of Black Widow by focusing on the audience’s emotion through the character’s actions or scenes, the narrative of the heroine, and sociopolitical achievements in dialogue in the Black Widow film. The conclusion of these findings were verifiable as it shows the character Black Widow as a femme fatale through the Male Gaze Theory. However, in the antihero trope and Female Gaze Theory, it humanizes Black Widow, and it dismantles the Male Gaze by focusing on her personality and untold storyline. Key Words: Black Widow, Male Gaze, Marvel Cinematic Universe, femme fatale, Female Gaz

Educating Others: A Vocation Promoting Meaning, Purpose and the Universal Apostolic Preferences

    No full text
Teaching as discerned vocation in urban Catholic schools has the potential to provide a far-reaching, integrative space for enacting the Universal Apostolic Preferences. This research explores the reflections of 31 novice teachers, enrolled in the Urban Catholic Teacher Corps (UCTC), a Jesuit university program in the northeast. This program supports the development and formation of novice teachers through graduate education, living in community, full-teaching responsibilities in an urban Catholic school, mentoring, coaching, and professional development. Teachers completed an online interview that elicited responses about what it means to lead a life of meaning and purpose and the factors that contribute to leading a life of meaning and purpose. Responses illustrated intentionality and planning with the aim of leading a life that was beyond-the self. Finally, the Universal Apostolic Preferences of “Walking with the Excluded” and “Journey with Youth to Create a Hope-filled Future” resonated in all responses. Findings suggest that teaching as discerned vocation in urban Catholic schools offers a far-reaching space for not only enacting integrative Universal Apostolic Preferences as teachers commit to taking up this work as vocation, but also serving as a model for evangelizing students, families, and communities to take up this work

Preferences, Practices, and Virtues: An Ethical Reflection on the Universal Apostolic Preferences

    No full text
The Society of Jesus has promulgated the Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAPs) for the decade 2019-29. We know what the UAPs are: to seek God, walk with the poor, accompany youth, and collaborate in the care of the earth. And we know what they are for: the ongoing conversion of persons and institutions in their commitment to the mission of reconciliation of justice. But what, exactly, is a “preference” anyhow? In this reflection, I draw on the moral tradition of virtue ethics to argue that the preferences are best understood as “practices” or, in other words, as the fundamental actions by which crucial virtues like mercy and justice are developed in persons and in institutions. I also argue that seeing the preferences as practices in the context of virtue ethics opens up fruitful possibilities for fostering engagement with the UAPs at Jesuit institutions of higher education
