Mantled Howler Monkeys (Alouatta palliata) in a Costa Rican Forest Fragment Do Not Modify Activity Budgets or Spatial Cohesion in Response to Anthropogenic Edges

    No full text
Forest fragmentation increases forest edge relative to forest interior, with lower vegetation quality common for primates in edge zones. Because most primates live in human-modified tropical forests within 1 km of their edges, it is critical to understand how primates cope with edge effects. Few studies have investigated how primates inhabiting a fragment alter their behaviour across forest edge and interior zones. Here we investigate how anthropogenic edges affect the activity and spatial cohesion of mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) at the La Suerte Biological Research Station (LSBRS), a Costa Rican forest fragment. We predicted the monkeys would spend greater proportions of their activity budget feeding and resting and a lower proportion travelling in edge compared to forest interior to compensate for lower resource availability in the edge. We also predicted that spatial cohesion would be lower in the edge to mitigate feeding competition. We collected data on activity and spatial cohesion (nearest neighbour distance; number of individuals within 5 m) in forest edge and interior zones via instantaneous sampling of focal animals. Contrary to predictions, the monkeys spent equal proportions of time feeding, resting and travelling in forest edge and interior. Similarly, there were no biologically meaningful differences in the number of individuals or the distance between nearest neighbours in the edge (1.0 individuals; 1.56 m) versus the interior (0.8 individuals; 1.73 m). Our results indicate that A. palliata at LSBRS do not adjust their activity or spatial cohesion patterns in response to anthropogenic edge effects, suggesting that the monkeys here exhibit less behavioural flexibility than A. palliata at some other sites. To develop effective primate conservation plans, it is therefore crucial to study primate species\u27 responses to fragmentation across their geographic range

An Essay Concerning the Substance of Counseling

    Get PDF
Our modern world appears to lack a way to find truth. Philosophically, this problem is formulated in a manner of knowing which never gets beyond the subject of the universe; even objectivity in the universe is arguable. The effort called empirical science then gives us conclusions that regularly perpetuate an unstable world. Due to this real subjective empirical constraint, the usual approach to therapeutic Counseling offers methods focused on the individual obtaining skills and conceptions that function to mitigate the apparent and ubiquitous problem of modernity. Empirical science, whether it be physical, biological or phenomenal, has left us with only problem; it leaves us in a lurch, right in the middle of a contradiction of a subject able to know truth. This is the main problem of mental health. I propose that modern problems of mental health cannot be solved truly with reference to what I call the conventional method of experiment and argumentative reason. We require a true and knowable substance of the universe if we are to gain headway. To this end, I propose a unitive discipline of Counseling founded in what is true of the universe. Less about the negotiation between subjects and more about what is true of that negotiation. This essay uses the philosophy of Graham Harman, called Object Oriented Ontology, or “Triple-O”, as a means to begin to establish the truthful substance of Counseling as a discipline in its own right, which is to say as well, as a universal object

INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL SERVICE TRIPS: COLONIALIST ROOTS AND ETHICS OF GLOBAL HEALTH TODAY

    Get PDF
Service trips have become a relatively common part of society today. People in both the professional and academic world often jump at the opportunity to be able to travel through the lens of learning or working. Service trips are framed as excursions to help marginalized communities, in reality, the trips end up being more about tourism and travel. Despite the attractive façade of medical service, its harmful impact is evident when examining it further. Medical trips often fall into two categories, voluntourism and capacity building. Voluntourism has a number of flaws, which cause long-term detrimental effects to the communities visited by these groups. In contrast, capacity building is viewed as a long-term effective way to build up a community’s health care infrastructure by developing social factors affecting health. To find a better system for international medical service, we must examine the history, ethics, and underlying assumptions of the field. This examination can help us find the most effective, ethical, and least harmful international health service today. It is our moral and social responsibility to find ways in which we can promote sustainable and positive global healthcare changing how international medical service is conducted

A Recognition/Appreciation Intervention to Decrease Stress and Burnout in Nursing Faculty

    Get PDF
Nursing faculty are at risk of stress and burnout that could lead to negative personal and system-level repercussions. A recognition and appreciation program was implemented at one public, four-year university to determine if it would decrease stress and burnout experienced by nursing faculty. The program utilized no- and low- cost strategies, including virtual events and sharing of faculty activities and achievements. Stress and burnout were measured before and after implementation of the program using the Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educator Survey (MBI), respectively. Improvements in mean scores on 31 of 36 measures of stress and burnout occurred between the pre- and post- program surveys. Due to challenges with pairing pre- and post- program surveys, a paired samples t-test was run with both five pairs and sixteen pairs. The test with five pairs found a statistically significant decrease in one PSS-10 question about feeling that difficulties were mounting and could not be overcome. The paired samples t-test with 16 pairs found statistically significant changes in one PSS-10 question about inability to control important things, two MBI questions, and the Emotional Exhaustion subscale of the MBI. This project supports that no- and low-cost strategies can be effective in addressing nursing faculty stress and burnout. While continuation of the program is recommended, further research is needed to demonstrate if the program caused the decrease in nursing faculty stress and burnout and to determine if additional interventions can be combined with the program for further impact

Pediatric Nurses\u27 Perception of Workload in a Large System Infusion Center

    Get PDF
Abstract In this large system infusion center, there is not a current acuity-based scheduling system. The nurses’ workload is directly impacted by the way patients are scheduled. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to gain an understanding of nurses’ perception of their workload throughout the day. The goal is to understand perceptions to drive improvements in the way patients are scheduled. A descriptive cross-sectional design was conducted using survey methodology, demographics and five open- ended questions. The Individual Workload Perception Scale-Revised tool was used to measure manager support, peer support, unit support, workload, intent to stay, and overall nurse satisfaction. Cronbach’s Alpha for each of these domains ranged from 0.64 to 0.93. The five open- ended questions were directly inquiring about what makes the best workday, the worse workday, what affects their workload, and what takes the most time during their workday. A convenience sample size of 44 nurses completed the survey which was an 88% response rate. Regression analysis found a statistical significance between peer support, unit support, workload, and the intent to stay. Pearson correlation showed a moderate positive correlation with nurse satisfaction and intent to stay (p =.000). The survey results were overall positive. The open-ended questions revealed overarching themes. The scheduling of patients and teamwork affects their workday. If the schedule is level loaded and there is good teamwork that day the nurses are satisfied. If the schedule is not level loaded and there is not good teamwork the nurses are dissatisfied. These results can be used to support the continued improvement of how patients are scheduled. Phase two of this project is to build and implement an acuity-based scheduling system to improve level loading of patients throughout the day. Key words: acuity-based scheduling, pediatric nurse perception, workload, DNP Projec

Beast or God: Philosophical Exclusion of Disability and Disabled Voices

    Get PDF
In philosophy, our goal is to ultimately discover what it is to be human. How do we exist in our world, and how should we exist? Throughout history, philosophers have been attempting to answer these questions in any way possible. Well, almost. Unfortunately, marginalized voices -- such as those with disabilities -- have been excluded from the conversation in a way that minimizes and undermines any answers provided. Philosophers such as Descartes make the argument that human existence is purely in the mind, and that we can separate ourselves from our bodies; many disabled philosophers would disagree. Disability studies finds that our body has just as much of an influence on our cognition as our brain (sometimes even more so); to separate ourselves from our bodies would be to fundamentally change our existence. We would not exist in the same capacity. But, because disabled voices have been excluded from philosophical literature and discussions, the canon currently has no choice but to follow the Socratic, Platonic, Aristotelian, and Cartesian ways of thinking: our bodies are mere instruments for our being and morality. In my thesis, I examine the ways in which ableism have influenced our philosophical thinking and how we as philosophers can attempt to include disabled voices in philosophy going forward

An Analysis of the Connection Between Insecure Attachment Style and Bodily Disposal Methods in Serial Homicide Offenders

    Get PDF
The purpose of this research was to connect behaviors based on John Bowlby’s Attachment Theory to bodily disposal methods utilized by serial homicide offenders. In this thesis, insecure attachment styles were the primary focus due to their translation into criminal behavior. The attachment styles analyzed within this study were anxious-preoccupied, dismissive-avoidant, and fearful-avoidant. The bodily disposal methods that were analyzed were set forth by the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crimes and are the primary disposal methods utilized by serial homicide offenders. The disposal methods analyzed were transport/concealment, transport/dumping, no-transport/concealment, and no-transport/as is. The approach utilized for this thesis was a grounded study approach, focusing on making conclusions from the already published data set. Results indicate that serial homicide offenders with an anxious-preoccupied attachment style are likely to utilize transport/concealment and no-transport/concealment bodily disposal methods, individuals with dismissive-avoidant attachment styles will utilize transport/dumping bodily disposal methods, and individuals with fearful-avoidant attachment styles will utilize no-transport/as is. Three offenders were utilized to exemplify the findings of this study, Jeffrey Dahmer represented the anxious-preoccupied attachment style, Donald Henry Gaskins represented the dismissive-avoidant attachment style, and Dennis Rader exemplified the fearful-avoidant attachment style

THE REAL HUNGER GAMES: DISORDERED EATING IN MALE ENDURANCE ATHLETES AND IMPLICATIONS FOR BONE HEALTH

    Get PDF
n this thesis, I aim to identify the social factors that cause men with disordered eating and negative body images to be neglected in research, explain a possible mechanism for bone injuries in male endurance athletes, and identify sociocultural factors that could make subpopulations of athletes more susceptible to disordered eating, hormone dysfunction, and bone injuries. The consequences of the physiological dysfunction resulting from disordered eating is not limited to the time in which the individual has disordered eating, but can impact the individual for the rest of their life. I will summarize research about female athletes’ patterns of disordered eating and bone injury, and compare and contrast it with research about male athletes. I will then propose some steps to remedy the research gaps and societal unawareness in this topic. I will advocate for including men in research about disordered eating, body image, and relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) and better education of coaches, medical practitioners, and athletic trainers. The evidence presented here demonstrates that men are subject to a similar hormone dysfunction as women when operating in caloric deficits and are at an increased risk for bone injury
