THE BENEFITS OF THERAPEUTIC ULTRASOUND FOR IMPROVING RECOVERY OF COLLEGIATE SOCCER PLAYERS IN BETWEEN FRIDAY AND SUNDAY MATCHES
Collegiate soccer athletes face physical and physiological stressors during match play that can lead to ailments such as inflammation, muscle soreness, decreased range of motion, and skeletal muscle damage. Through the use of evidence-based studies coaches, trainers, and collegiate soccer athletes can determine best practices for optimized recovery in a collegiate soccer setting. One of the lacking supplemental recovery modalities in collegiate soccer is therapeutic ultrasound. Therapeutic ultrasound is a machine that utilizes vibration and thermal effects to help decrease skeletal muscular damage, reduce soreness of skeletal muscles, improve blood flow, and increase relaxation of the muscles. Therapeutic ultrasound in congruence with a holistic, and well-rounded recovery plan including proper nutrition, appropriate water intake, and adequate sleep can lead to optimized recovery for collegiate soccer athletes. By gaining more information through research and supplemental data collection, health professionals, coaches, and athletes will be better informed about the physiological benefits that therapeutic ultrasound possesses for collegiate soccer athletes as well as athletes of other endurance and power related sports
Dreaming of Euphoria: How the interaction of female opioid use disorder and sleep has contributed to the severity of the opioid epidemic
The opioid epidemic has run rampant in the United States for three decades. This is attributed to the misuse of prescription opioids, like OxyContin, and the creation of cheap synthetic drugs, like fentanyl. The US healthcare system and treatment for chronic pain relies on opioid-based medications, which has only come to prolong and exacerbate the opioid crisis. Opioids are highly addictive drugs that pose the risk of addiction in many individuals. Not everyone who uses opioids will become addicted, but factors, such as presence of sleep disturbances and sex differences, affect the likelihood of a chronic opioid user developing an addiction. Sex differences in opioid use disorder must be considered when examining potential treatment options, how drugs effect the brain, and how it effects the course of the opioid epidemic. Exploring the link between sex differences, sleep disturbances, and opioid use will help us discover more effective treatment plans, explain the behavior patterns of people with addictions, and end the stigmatization of addiction. Treating patients with a holistic approach and looking for ways to treat the patient and not the disorder will increase retention rate of opioid use disorder therapy, decrease sleep disturbances, treat chronic pain without opioids, and stop the epidemic
Bowen Informed Therapy Integrated with Gene Keys
The mental health professions require innovation in order to advance theory and practice. This article presents reimagined therapeutic work that joins the metaphysical element of Gene Keys with the largely accepted theoretical approach of Bowen Family Systems Theory. We propose the integration of metaphysics as a way to facilitate higher levels of differentiation – particularly in clients who have an expanded worldview inclusive of metaphysics. The reader is asked to stretch their beliefs and perspective as they read through this paper
Learning by Playing: A Curriculum Utilizing Improvisational Theater to Develop Prosocial Behavior Skills and Self-efficacy in Young Adolescents
Prosocial behavior requires competency in social-emotional skills including interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, and emotional regulation. During the developmental stage of early adolescence, youth are learning these skills and are more likely to engage in prosocial behavior if they feel efficacious in them. However, most social-emotional learning programs focus on conceptual knowledge in these areas without providing sufficient opportunities for practice, which does not allow students to develop sufficient procedural knowledge and self-efficacy. Improvisational theater offers a solution to this problem; used in concert with social-emotional lessons, it provides practice scenarios and procedural learning opportunities. This project consists of a curriculum built on these principles intended for use in a Montessori middle school environment. Its structure aligns with both Montessori secondary best practices and the fluid nature of interpersonal skills, allowing the teacher to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the class. It contains notes on implementation, lesson plans, and supplemental documents. In the discussion, students describe the perceived benefits of the program, including improved self-efficacy and a sense of community. Future directions include peer review, curriculum expansion, and research on efficacy
The Athletic Identity and Cognitive Emotional Responses of Regis University Student Athletes in the Face of COVID-19
COVID-19 impacted the entire world. One specific population of individuals who suffered from implications of the novel coronavirus was athletes. As the virus spread around the globe and quarantine regulations were being established, athletes across various competition levels experienced cancellations of their sport seasons. This event led many athletes to lose their athletic identity; the degree to which one identifies with the athletic role. Individuals who develop a stronger, more exclusive athletic identity are likely to experience more difficulties when sport related transitions like injury or retirement occur. In the present study, I predicted that athletes who have a higher athletic identity would implement less adaptive cognitive emotional responses to the cancellation of the 2020 competition season due to COVID-19. This hypothesis was tested using the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale and the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire on Regis University student-athletes. I found a non-significant relationship between athletic identity and each cognitive emotional regulation strategy and that Regis University student-athletes employed adaptive responses more commonly than maladaptive responses. These results suggest that despite having a strong athletic identity, Regis University athletes utilized strong coping skills in response to the chaotic changes that COVID- 19 induced. The present study contributes to the broader field of identity and the implications that the coronavirus had on the lives of athletes
Can Discourse Ethics Be Applied To Emergencies?
Emergencies arise unexpectedly and when they occur, it is the job of our governments to respond to them. They often do so by using emergency powers, designed to return the nation back to its original state. Ensuring that our responses to emergencies are ethical is essential if we wish to return to a state of normalcy. To ensure that everyone is treated fairly, not only during the emergency, but also during the rebuilding and healing periods of the post-emergency world, we must critically analyze our emergency response. In this paper, I propose that Discourse Ethics, a normative theory suggesting that through moral discourse those affected by an action can come to an agreement as to the valid, i.e., moral, course of action, can help us determine ethical responses to emergencies. I apply Discourse Ethics to examples of emergency powers used during the COVID-19 pandemic and come to the conclusion that the best way for Discourse Ethics to be applied to emergencies is before the emergency power is implemented, in the emergency preparedness stage. This is because Discourse Ethics works best when there is time to build consensus and when power differentials are able to be set aside
WHEN A CULTURE OF “CURA PERSONALIS” INFLUENCES DRUG DEVELOPMENT
Throughout history the development of medicine and pharmaceuticals has been a process trial and error. First, humanity tested the safety of natural products, then scientists consumed their synthetic products; in both cases there were high costs of learning the effects. However, as we advance scientifically and medically there has been significant growth, especially in the field of vasodilation. These advancements, allow us to predict, and evaluate potential side effects or alternative purposes of medication, thus allowing the development of modern day precision medicine. This precision medicine will allow us to move to care based upon the principles of cura personalis or care for the individual, rather the whole person, moving beyond treating the symptoms and working to treat the underlying causes of their ailments while considering their unique needs and background. In order to achieve this ideal of medicine efforts must be made to investigate the fundamental science which underlies our own biochemistry and how we can safely alter this. In order to treat our fellow man’s ailments with cura personalis in mind we must support the scientific and medicinal advancements which allow us to achieve precision medicine

The Relationship between Nursing Faculty Stress and Gratitude Journaling
“The relationship between nursing faculty stress and gratitude journaling”
Kathleen L. Whalen, MS RN – Regis University
The National League for Nursing (NLN) has reported a national shortage of nursing faculty. Some of the factors involved are limited qualified faculty, schools’ inability to offer competitive wages, and faculty leaving due to stress or retiring. A quality improvement project was developed for full-time faculty in a university nursing program in dealing with stress, which could aid in retention. A quasi-experiment with a pre-test and post-test design was used to measure participants’ stress using the Perceived Stress Scale–10 (PSS-10) before and after using a gratitude journal for six weeks. A paired samples t-test showed that the mean total scores of the PSS-10 from the pre-aggregate to the post-aggregate data were not significantly different. The data was noteworthy in that the full-time faculty did not complete the journal on average of once a week. A comparison of the mean total score of the pre-intervention and post-intervention PSS-10 total scores was not statistically significant but trending in the right direction. This also showed that most of the participants were in the medium stress level category. The data lend support to the evidence that faculty have heavy workloads and are not able to complete the journals. More research needs to be completed on gratitude journaling and finding ways to decrease nursing faculty stress
MFT Trainee Experiences of Shame, Self-Criticism, and Self-Compassion in Their First Practicum
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of MFT trainee shame, self-criticism, and self-compassion. Additionally, this study also sought to understand how those experiences may affect a trainee’s clinical work as a first-time practicum student. Interviews were conducted with 15 trainees in a graduate program who were performing therapy at a practicum site. Utilizing Moustakas’ transcendental phenomenology, six essential themes emerged: (1) shame and self-criticism are interrelated and can affect therapeutic presence; (2) self-criticism can have a positive impact on clinical work; (3) trainees use metaphors to describe shame and self-criticism (4) self-compassion is an antidote to shame and self-criticism; (5) support from others is helpful to manage shame and self-criticism; and (6) graduate training on shame, self-criticism, and self-compassion was more implicit than explicit. A discussion of these findings, including recommendations for future research, training, and limitations are explored
