    Evolution and future of climate services

    Resumen de la ponencia presentada en: XXXVI Jornadas Científicas de la AME y el XXII Encuentro Hispano Luso de Meteorología celebrado en Cádiz y San Fernando del 13 al 15 de marzo de 2024.Climate services are the provision of climate information for use in decision-making taking into account the context and values of those involved. As climate information is only one, possibly relatively minor, element of what is needed by those climate-sensitive decision makers, climate services need to be integrated with other information or services of relevance to the decision-makers. This creates much of the context to be taken into account in the co-production approaches typically used in climate services to create value. This presentation will describe the recent evolution, landscape, and market of climate services, the actors in the landscape, what climate services are being used for, and highlight some of the successes and gaps. The presentation will be based on experiences from research projects and service contracts

    Analysis and effects of the September 2023 DANA episode on the central peninsula

    Resumen de la ponencia presentada en: XXXVI Jornadas Científicas de la AME y el XXII Encuentro Hispano Luso de Meteorología celebrado en Cádiz y San Fernando del 13 al 15 de marzo de 2024.The DANA that affected the Iberian Peninsula at the beginning of September 2023 affected large areas of the peninsula. Especially important were the precipitations in the mouth of the Ebro, Cadiz area and peninsular center. This type of high intensity phenomena is characteristic of Mediterranean areas in autumn and can also affect other coastal areas. However, it is not so usual, for the central area of the peninsula, to be affected by this type of phenomenon with so much impact. In this article we will try to explain a little better the meteorological situation and the effects that occurred in the most affected inland areas

    TRAM: the new numerical model of Meteo-UIB suited for all kinds of regional atmospheric predictions

    Resumen de la ponencia presentada en: XXXVI Jornadas Científicas de la AME y el XXII Encuentro Hispano Luso de Meteorología celebrado en Cádiz y San Fernando del 13 al 15 de marzo de 2024.A new limited-area numerical model, TRAM (Triangle-based Regional Atmospheric Model), has recently been developed at Meteo-UIB. The model utilizes a nonhydrostatic and fully compressible (NHFC) version of the Navier-Stokes equations and incorporates numerous original characteristics. In this work, it is presented and validated through numerous 2D and 3D tests. TRAM performs as well as state-of-the-art models and is suitable for simulating circulations ranging from small-scale thermal bubbles to synoptic-scale baroclinic cyclones, including orographic circulations, thermally driven flows, squall lines, supercells, all kinds of precipitation systems, and medicanes.     Complementary of offshore energy resources on the Spanish coasts: wind, wave and photovoltaic energy

    Resumen de la ponencia presentada en: XXXVI Jornadas Científicas de la AME y el XXII Encuentro Hispano Luso de Meteorología celebrado en Cádiz y San Fernando del 13 al 15 de marzo de 2024.The complementarity of solar, wind, and wave energy resources in hybrid offshore platforms can boost productivity and lessen energy output variability compared to reliance on a single source. Using ERA5 reanalysis, this study assesses wind, solar, and wave energy potentials in potential Spanish offshore locations. Wind energy emerges as the primary resource across Spanish offshore regions, followed by photovoltaic energy. Despite "drought periods" where no energy is generated, wave energy offers consistent energy flow, particularly in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands. Evaluating the synergy of these energy sources reveals hybrid platforms' potential to enhance production and reduce variability. While wind and solar energy dominate production, wave and solar photovoltaic energy are crucial for minimizing variability. This study lays the groundwork for integrating multiple energy converters on hybrid platforms to advance powerful and sustainable energy production

    Climatic assessment of the wind+solar potential in a insulated system (the Canary Islands)

    Resumen de la ponencia presentada en: XXXVI Jornadas Científicas de la AME y el XXII Encuentro Hispano Luso de Meteorología celebrado en Cádiz y San Fernando del 13 al 15 de marzo de 2024.The integration in the energy mix of variable renewable energies (VRE) is neccessary to achieve net-zero emissions, but is highly compromised due to the intermittency of the electricity generation from these sources. To help on that, the CLIMAX tool provides guidance about actionable strategies for the deployment of the facilities that exploit the spatio-temporal complementarity of the two main VRE, wind and solar, in order to reduce the volatility of their combined production. In this case study, we applied CLIMAX over the Canary Islands and evaluate the role of the urban areas in promoting the stability of the Canary energy mix while enlarging the penetration of these two main VRE. Results showed that the optimal scenarios generated with CLIMAX would reduce the undesired fluctuations of the joint wind+solar electricity production around 30% as compared to a baseline deployment scenario, and encourage energy policies aimed at maximizing the rooftop area for utility photovoltaic development

    Resumen de la ponencia presentada en: XXXVI Jornadas Científicas de la AME y el XXII Encuentro Hispano Luso de Meteorología celebrado en Cádiz y San Fernando del 13 al 15 de marzo de 2024.Phenology, as a science positioned between ecology and climatology, is an important tool for studies applied to the agricultural and environmental sectors. Phenological data can characterize the climate (including microclimates) of a territory, its variability and trends, atmospheric and soil-climatic environmental gradients, as well as the population genetic variability of biological species in relation to their geographic distribution area. Phenological data from Tudela de Duero station has been used to perform a simple descriptive statistics analysis to ecoclimatically characterize the station, define a typical phenological spring ("nature’s calendar"), and search for trends in the occurrence dates of events. This work presents a summary of the results of these studies

    El ejercicio profesional de la astronomía y de la Meteorología en España puede desarrollarse tanto en el ámbito privado como en el público, aunque en ambas existe una fuerte presencia de asociaciones de aficionados que colaboran y mantienen unos vínculos muy cercanos con las instituciones/organismos oficiales y el personal profesional. En el ámbito privado puede desarrollarse ambas materias en empresas relacionadas con el sector en cuestión, y sobre todo en grupos audiovisuales o medios de comunicación que necesitan periodistas especializados y divulgadores científicos, y también en otros tipos de plataformas que pueden encontrarse en internet. Igualmente hay empresas vinculadas directa o indirectamente con la Astronomía y/o la Meteorología que pueden contar con asesores o consultores cualificados, con formación en dichas materias, entre su personal. En cualquiera de esos ámbitos privados, la relación laboral será la pactada por la empresa y las personas que van a trabajar en ellas sujetos al Estatuto de los Trabajadores y convenios colectivos de cada sector en concreto, en caso de haberlos, firmando un contrato de trabajo en alguna de las modalidades legalmente contempladas. También podría darse una relación entre la empresa y trabajadores freelance o autónomos. Por otra parte, en el sector público se puede desarrollar una carrera profesional, tanto en astronomía como en meteorología, como funcionario de carrera de la Administración General del Estado en los diferentes cuerpos creados a tal fin, o como personal laboral contratado en alguna de las modalidades contempladas en la Ley, en el ámbito del Estatuto de los Trabajadores y en los Convenios Colectivos a los que pertenezca la actividad que se desarrolle (investigación, docencia, o cualquier otra)

    Retrieval of Solar Shortwave Irradiance from All-Sky Camera Images

    The present work proposes a new model based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) to retrieve solar shortwave (SW) irradiance via the estimation of the cloud modification factor (CMF) from daytime sky images captured by all-sky cameras; this model is named CNN-CMF. To this end, a total of 237,669 sky images paired with SW irradiance measurements obtained by using pyranometers were selected at the following three sites: Valladolid and Izaña, Spain, and Lindenberg, Germany. This dataset was randomly split into training and testing sets, with the latter excluded from the training model in order to validate it using the same locations.The research has been supported by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, with the grant no.
