Borrasca Karlotta
Karlotta fue la décimo primera borrasca de la temporada 2023-2024. La nombró AEMET el 6 de febrero a las 10:30 UTC. En el aviso de su nombramiento se indicaba que la borrasca afectaría principalmente al noroeste de la península ibérica desde las 23 UTC del día 7, zona para la que se emitirían avisos naranjas por intensas rachas de viento, acumulados significativos de precipitación y fuerte oleaje sobre sus costas. Los efectos más adversos de la borrasca no solo se sintieron en el cuadrante noroccidental, sino también en Andalucía occidental donde se registraron importantes acumulados de precipitación en muchas de las comarcas de Sevilla y Córdoba
Climatological study of wind potential in Portugal and regional analysis of energy production by wind turbines
Resumen de la ponencia presentada en: XXXVI Jornadas Científicas de la AME y el XXII Encuentro Hispano Luso de Meteorología celebrado en Cádiz y San Fernando del 13 al 15 de marzo de 2024.Portugal's climate allows the country to invest in different forms of renewable energy, namely hydroelectric, solar and wind. This study is focused on wind energy and its main objective is to support management and decision-making in the process of converting wind energy into electricity and help Portugal in its transition to a more sustainable energy system. Specifically, the project's specific objectives are to improve the characterization and understanding of on and offshore wind potential as well as to evaluate the different technologies available on the market. Wind data measured at IPMA meteorological stations and ERA5 reanalysis will be used for a climatological period of 30 years. Power profiles of different turbines will also be used to identify those most suitable for the conditions of each region. The results of the climatological analysis of the wind and the suitability of the turbines in each location, obtained based on data from reanalysis and wind observations, will be presented and discussed
Relationships between NDVI and turbulent heat fluxes in a mediterranean grassland
Resumen de la ponencia presentada en: XXXVI Jornadas Científicas de la AME y el XXII Encuentro Hispano Luso de Meteorología celebrado en Cádiz y San Fernando del 13 al 15 de marzo de 2024.Vegetation plays a key role on the interaction between the land surface and the atmospheric processes, and its functioning could be monitored through spectral indices such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) obtained through remote sensing data. The aim of this work is to investigate the relationships between NDVI and the turbulent heat fluxes near the surface in a grassland ecosystem of Central Spain throughout a three-year period (January 2018- August 2020). Results showed that NDVI is strong correlated with sensible and latent fluxes especially during the end of growing period. Thus, including NDVI in could improve atmospheric models
Mud rain climatologies in peninsular Spain and Balearic Islands
Resumen de la ponencia presentada en: XXXVI Jornadas Científicas de la AME y el XXII Encuentro Hispano Luso de Meteorología celebrado en Cádiz y San Fernando del 13 al 15 de marzo de 2024.Mud rain, a phenomenon driven by raindrops transporting mineral aerosols from the atmosphere, is gaining
prominence with increasing impacts across diverse sectors. This study focuses on establishing a climatology for
this variable over the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. The approach involves integrating grids of daily
observed precipitation with predicted values of aerosol optical depth (AOD) from the EAC4 model. The
determination of AOD thresholds influencing the occurrence of perceptible mud rain draws on data recorded
from the meteorological observatory of Murcia (2017-2021). Validation efforts include the development of two
additional climatologies based on wet deposition predictions and reanalysis from the global models CAMS and
MERRA-2 respectively, revealing significant similarities but also some interesting differences
