In this work, we present results of the development of an observation-based gridded climate dataset (ClimUAd), which covers theterritory of Ukraine for the period of 1946–2020. The spatial resolution of the developed data is 0.1° × 0.1° (approximately 10 kmin both longitude and latitude directions), with a 1-day time step. Four essential climate variables are included in the dataset, namely daily sums of atmospheric precipitation and daily minimum, mean, and maximum air temperature. The created grid-ded product is based on the complete collection of station measurements performed at 178 weather stations in Ukraine. Qualitycontrol, homogenisation, and gridding of the station time series were performed by means of the widely used software, INQC,Climatol, and MISH, respectively. The created gridded time series were statistically compared with several existing datasetsthat have the same spatial resolution (i.e., previously developed gridded monthly data of Ukraine, ERA5-Land and E- OBS) onmonthly and daily scales. The comparison showed good accordance with the Ukrainian monthly data (partly obtained fromother paper sources than the daily data and homogenised with HOMER software) and acceptable agreement with ERA5-Landand E- OBS data. The developed data are of great importance as they were built with the involvement of as many real weathermeasurements as possible, representing a denser network than those included in continental/global gridded products. They canbe used for regional climate monitoring and as the reference for a wide variety of climatological applications for the territory ofUkraine. The dataset is freely available for research purposes and can be downloaded from the data repository of the UkrainianHydrometeorological Institute

[EN]Analyzing the relationship between the economy, energy and the environment poses a complex challenge, particularly in developing nations experiencing rapid economic and population growth. This study introduces a System Dynamics model specifically designed to investigate the intricate relationship between economic activities, electricity production, and CO2 emissions. Focusing on Tanzania, the model evaluates various scenarios and installed capacity expansion policies and their implications for greenhouse gas emissions, considering the limitations of energy on economic growth, which in turn impact energy demand. By representing the economy endogenously, the model offers a nuanced understanding of how energy choices affect both economic performance and climate outcomes. The analysis compares scenarios that explore energy transitions against the backdrop of fossil fuel expansion. Preliminary results suggest that adjustments to policy frameworks can promote a more sustainable energy mix, leading to significant reductions in CO2 emissions. Ultimately, this approach enhances climate resilience while fostering economic sustainable growth. This work has been developed under the ONEPLanET project (funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement no 101084127). [EN] In the context of climate change, the Duero Region in Castilla y León - a region with a great wine-growing tradition and importance with twelve Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) - is experiencing changes in environmental conditions and agroecological rhythms that reveal a potential distorting effect on grape and wine production and quality. Bioclimatic indices, including the Winkler Index or Growing Degree Day (GDD) (1944) and Huglin's Heliothermal Index (1978), are an effective tool for detecting possible alterations in the climatic conditions of a viticultural area. In this sense, the análisis by means of these bioclimatic indices of the daily temperatures and annual rainfall of a representative number of weather stations in the study area, has revealed changes in trends that appear to be consolidating. The increase in temperatures and the reduction in available water resources due to the increase in potential evapotranspiration pose challenges that will have an impact on the wine sector, affecting all the agents involved, both in the production/processing processes and in the value chain activities associated with the sector. These challenges include changes in the phenological evolution of the vine and increased water requirements, to the possible shift in altitude of the vineyards towards climatically less adverse areas for cultivation, with possible effects on the characteristics of the wines.

[EN] Cyclones with tropical characteristics pose a major threat to European society due to the associated impacts. An increase in this type of anomalous cyclone has been observed over the last decade, most of them resulting from a tropical transition (TT) process, in which a baroclinic cyclone transforms into a barotropic cyclone. An example is Hurricane Ophelia in 2017, the most intense tropical cyclone (CAT3) whose tropical cyclogenesis was a TT. In this work, we study the evolution of the heating of the center of the system as a generating effect of mesoscale processes in the final stage of Ophelia's TT. This work deepens the knowledge of the evolution of the heating of the center of a system undergoing a TT process. Hurricane Ophelia was simulated with the WRFARW model at a horizontal resolution of 1 km. The results show that the system has three distinct phases depending on its thermal nature: 1) a phase of cold baroclinic nature of the cyclone; 2) a phase at the beginning of the TT process, where the system shares baroclinic and barotropic characteristics; 3) a phase of continuous warming in the last phase of the TT and first intensification of the tropical cyclone, associated with convective activity. Get PDF
We present a comprehensive characterization of the optical properties of various aerosol types based on data collected using a compact dual-wavelength depolarization elastic lidar (532 and 808 nm, CIMEL CE376). This study evaluates the vertical distribution and temporal evolution of aerosols observed in the subtropical North Atlantic region, covering Saharan dust, volcanic aerosols, and fresh and aged wildfire plumes. Measurements were conducted between August 2021 and August 2023, using a modified two-wavelength Klett inversion method to derive the aerosol backscatter and extinction coefficients from CE376 lidar measurements. To assess the performance of the CE376 system, an intercomparison campaign with an MPL-4B lidar (MPLNET) was conducted, with both systems were collocated at the Izaña Atmospheric Research Centre (Canary Islands, Spain). Both instruments depicted the vertical aerosol structure similarly. This research has been supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) under the HARMONIA (International network for harmonization of atmospheric aerosol retrievals from ground-based photometers) Action CA21119. The MPLNET project is funded by the NASA Radiation Science Program and Earth Observing System.
