During the 2021 La Palma eruption, both existing and newly deployed air quality and atmospheric monitoring networks in the Canary Islands (Spain) played a crucial role in supporting decision-making for public safety and enhancing the understanding of the crisis. In this study, we report direct-sun measurements using low (EM27/SUN) and high (IFS-125HR) spectral resolution Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectrometers located up to ~140 km away from the volcano and contributing to key atmospheric global networks. In La Palma, the EM27/SUN was combined with a Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) instrument. We present new FTIR retrieval methods to derive the SO2, CO2, CO, HF, HCl relative abundance in the volcanic plume from both low- and high- resolution solar absorption spectra. We derived SO2 volcanic emission fluxes from the Sentinel-5P TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) and estimated the emission fluxes of the other volcanic species over the whole eruption. We estimate the volcanic emission to the atmosphere for SO2, CO2, HCl, HF and CO to be 1.8±0.2 Mt, 19.4±1.8 Mt, 0.05±0.01 Mt, 0.013±0.002 Mt and 0.123±0.005 Mt, respectively. We show a good agreement between these estimates and the degassing balance derived from a petrologic approach. This eruption produced emissions that compare directly with annual anthropogenic emissions at different spatial scales. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using existing atmospheric FTIR and DOAS global networks to monitor volcanic plumes composition more than 100 km away, and is of relevance for volcanological monitoring and research during volcanic crises. This study was partially funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU within the actions P02.C05.I03.P51.S000.42 and P02.C05.I03.P51.S000.43. [EN] Future decarbonised power systems will be based on large-scale deployment of solar and wind generation, both of which are characterised by significant spatio-temporal variability. Energy modelling plays a key role in identifying cost-effective generation mixes that ensure security of supply and low CO2 emissions. This study investigates the impact of the CO2 reduction target on the optimal configuration of renewable generation and storage for Spain. It uses PyPSA-Spain, an open-source model of the Spanish energy system based on the European model PyPSA-Eur. The results show a strong correlation between the required PV capacity and the CO2 reduction target, a higher suitability of wind energy for spatial balancing with neighbouring countries, and the role of interconnections in reducing the required renewable generation capacity. In addition, the high spatio-temporal resolution of the model allows detailed capacity requirements at the NUTS 3 level (provinces), providing valuable insights for policy makers, local authorities and other societal actors. This research was funded by the Spanish Ministerio de Universidades, through the national mobility program of the Plan Estatal de Investigación Cientı́fica, Técnica y de Innovación 312021-2023, grant number CAS22/00069

[EN] The IBERA (IBErian ReAnalysis) project is a reanalysis initiative with a 2.5 km resolution that began in 2020, featuring a high resolution prototype based on HARMONIE-AROME and supplemented with an offline surface analysis. Currently, the initial prototype, which demonstrated added value compared to other available reanalysis, is being refined with an updated version of HARMONIE-AROME, an increase in the number of vertical levels considered and an expansion of the domain. Additionally, the number of observations used is being increased, and the inclusion of satellite and GPS GNSS Zenit Total Delay (ZTD) data is under consideration. Initially, the reanalysis will cover the period from 1990 to 2024, with the intent to continue real-time production with an approximate two-months delay to optimize the reception and quality control of observations. Production is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2026. Improvements are anticipated in the representation of small-scale phenomena, precipitation estimation, hydrological fields, and wind and solar energy. This report details the system configuration and specifies the observations used. Moreover, initial impact tests are presented, and the production plans are described.
