Food waste crisis in the United States of America: the known, the overlooked and the undisclosed

With a loss of 1,250 calories per day per person or 140 kg/p/yr, the United States (U.S.) has a large problem with food waste. The later a product is wasted in the supply chain, the greater its environmental cost. Many food waste mitigation efforts focus on the retail and consumer stages, but there is also considerable food waste in the production phase, which includes growing, harvesting, transportation, storage and processing. The study is conducted in two steps: a bibliometric analysis of 218 articles on food waste in the U.S., followed by an investigation of options to meet food waste recovery targets. The study has identified three options to reduce food waste that are partially based on the bibliometric analysis. The options, Secondary Retail Food Stores, Enhanced Tax Credits, and a Task Force, were evaluated based on cost-effectiveness, diversion from landfills, and waste reduction using the Criteria Analysis Matrix method. The study found that establishing a multi-modal, multi-directional non-governmental Task Force to create awareness and spread knowledge among stakeholders, mainly consumers was the preferred policy alternative to tackle food waste issues in the U.S

Chemical compositions of initial and residual silicate source glasses from degassing experiments: implications for Mars

    No full text
These files contain supporting data for the JGR manuscript Trace Element Transport and Deposition during Magmatic Degassing: The Effect on Martian Rocks and Fines. They report the chemical compositions (major oxides and volatiles) of initial and residual silicate source glasses from degassing and vapor-transport experiments. Composition (wt%) of major oxides calculated from EMPA (renormalized on a volatile-free basis); Cl and SO2 from EMPA (wt% based on total of oxides+Cl+SO2); wt% H2O calculated from micro-FTIR. Files include the raw EMPA and FTIR data, processing, and calculations used to obtain the chemical compositions presented in Table 5 of the manuscript

Exploring the Connection Between Teaching Frameworks and Policies for Assessing Teaching

Most faculty policies aimed at faculty review or assessment of teaching do not include specific teaching criteria and standards but instead lean heavily on student evaluations and peer review of teaching. This approach provides no concrete path for using assessment in a feedback loop that enables teachers to improve teaching. Implementing teaching frameworks can improve feedback loops and assessment policies by providing specific criteria and standards. Developing teaching effectiveness frameworks and connecting them to teaching assessment policies can be a critical step in advancing institutional change initiatives focused on teaching effectiveness. This critical alignment enables sustainable and meaningful change. This article explores positive outcomes from aligning institutional teaching assessment policies to teaching frameworks as the primary means of assessing teaching: creating a shared language, strengthening the role of formative feedback, building up the role of faculty development throughout the career span, and creating transparent and reliable expectations for faculty reviews

Trans* Student Experiences in Higher Education

This paper reviews literature on trans* students\u27 experiences in higher education, examining their obstacles and institutional approaches to inclusion. The study investigates challenges regarding chosen names and pronouns, access to facilities, extracurricular involvement, and the impact of increasing anti-trans* legislation. Despite growing visibility, trans* students continue to report harassment, discrimination, and a decreased sense of belonging. The paper explores current Title IX interpretations and recommends that higher education administrators develop inclusive policies, enhance professional development, and create supportive campus environments that foster trans* students\u27 academic success and overall well-being

La quarta via, Aulò, Oltre i bordi e Maka: attività didattiche

    No full text
