    No full text

Optimal initial bid and new keywords suggestion in sponsored search auctions

    No full text
The suggestion of profitable new keywords and the estimation of the optimal initial bid for each of them, are two crucial problems that every bidding strategy has to address in order to maxime profits in Sponsored Search Auctions (SSA). In this thesis, both problems are solved from the perspective of an economic agent not considered in the research developed so far: the broker. It is an intermediary between search engine and advertisers, purchasing ad slots from the former and selling them to the latters. The optimal initial bid is cast as a regression problem, where regressors are the keyword itself (encoded in a numerical vector) and a set of features known a-priori, provided by the search engine. The dependent variable is the actual bid observed. The complex highly non-linear relationship is learnt by a Fully Connected Neural Network. The observations used for training and testing are those belonging to keywords with a positive average profit, in order to ensure that the relation learnt leads to positive profitability. The new keywords suggestion problem is solved defining a general web scraping method, designed to work on almost every webpage returned from a query, followed by keywords extractors algorithms to retrieve relevant terms. A filter is created to clean the extracted keywords, improving quality of suggestions. The proposed neural network reaches a prediction error in the test set of just 0.16$, while performance of the new keywords suggestion tool is assessed by human evaluators, using broadly adopted metrics in the field (Relatedness, Non-obviosness and F-score). The best keywords extractor model reaches an F-score higher than 0.6 for every scrap level and number of suggesions requiered. The synergy between the new keywords suggestion tool, able to provide related but non-obvious (and so cheap) keywords, and the optimal initial bid tool, able to estimate a reliable starting bid, should increase the overall broker’sprofit

    Get PDF
Abstract: Il lavoro di tesi mira a studiare i fenomeni fotoindotti su cristalli liquidi contenuti in canali microfluidici, anche confinati in gocce, mediante l'utilizzo di un dispositivo opto-microfluidico basato su niobato di litio. Abstract: This thesis aims to study photoinduced phenomena on liquid crystals contained in microfluidic channels and confined in droplets through the use of an opto-microfluidic device based on lithium niobate. It deals with to measure the alignment effect induced by the labeled photovoltaic field in the material and quantify its entity basing on the alignment measurements of the crystals dispersed in the microfluidic channel to then obtain results with effects of confinement induced by dispersing the same crystals in droplets. The alignment measures are conducted by means of optical transmittance measurements in polarized light through light guides integrated in the aforementioned device and transverse to the microfluidic channel

Probing the asymmetry of matter distribution in galaxy clusters' environment with hydrodynamical simulations

Abstract: Galaxy clusters are the most massive cosmic structures in the Universe, and are connected at their peripheries to extended and complex filamentary structures, that act as funnels for the infalling material. This network of clusters and filaments is known as the cosmic web. For this reason, matter distribution in and around galaxy clusters is far from being isotropic, and the anisotropies are related to the processes of structure formation, with different matter components (dark matter, galaxies and different gas phases) being affected by different physical effects. Therefore, in this work we decided to study the asymmetries in the distributions of the different matter components from the central regions of galaxy to their outskirts. For this analysis we used the data from the cosmological hydrodynamical simulation IllustrisTNG. To characterize the asymmetries of the matter distribution we used two methods, both based on an harmonic decomposition of the projected matter density: the harmonic power excess, and the β parameters, which we introduce here for the first time. \ud In the first part of the work we used the harmonic power excess to study the asymmetries of galaxy and gas distributions in and around galaxy clusters, with respect to the background distribution. We found that, on average, matter distribution in the inner cluster regions tends to be elliptical in shape, while the outskirts of clusters present a more complex harmonic signature, pointing towards the presence of filamentary structures. We also observed that different gas phases trace different structures in galaxy clusters: while the hot gas (that has been shock heated to high temperatures) is mainly found inside clusters, and traces their elliptical shapes, the warm-hot intergalactic medium is a better tracer for the filaments that connect to the clusters’ outskirts. In the second part of the project we used the β parameters to quantify the level of asymmetry in dark matter and gas distributions in clusters’ environments. We then related these quantities to the cluster properties. We found that the level of asymmetries is correlated to the geometrical properties of the matter density field, such as the ellipticity and the number of filaments around clusters, called the connectivity. It also shows dependencies on the radial distance from the cluster center, on the cluster mass, and on the cluster dynamical state. This work shows that the harmonic decomposition of the projected matter density can be a powerful tool to probe the departure from spherical symmetry of the matter distribution, and the level of asymmetry of the various matter components can be used as a probe of the cluster propertie

Operation optimization of a multi-energy microgrid under uncertainties

    Get PDF
Multi-energy microgrids (MEMG) can simultaneously distribute and supply electrical and thermal energy to customers. This thesis work proposes an optimal coordinated dispatch method to minimize the operating costs of a MEMG when multiple uncertain parameters are considered. The operation method was modeled as a single-stage stochastic programming problem. The results demonstrated that the proposed operation model can achieve robust solutions when uncertainties are modeled accurately
