    Get PDF
This work provides the first detailed mineralogical-petrographical characterization of the massive sulphide deposit of Colle della Borra (Val Soana, Western Alps). The massive sulphide deposit is hosted within an ophiolitic sequence composed of calcschists with interlayered metabasites, micaschists, chloriteschists, quartzites and marbles, metamorphosed under eclogitic facies conditions (MODESTI, 2021). In particular, the ore deposit is interposed between Grt-Cld micaschists in the foot-wall and chloriteschists in the hanging-wall. The ore mineral association mainly comprises pyrite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite, along with sphalerite; the proportion of the three main ore minerals vary considerably in different specimens. The gangue minerals are dominated chlorite, followed by quartz, albite, carbonate, epidote, white mica and garnet. Thanks to a detailed micro-textural and geochemical study, supported by spot electron microprobe analyses and elemental maps of some trace elements (Co, Ni, As), a primary seafloor, hydrothermal-volcanogenic origin of the mineralization is suggested, which occurred on the Ligurian Piedmont Ocean floor and was followed by subduction and exhumation during the Alpine orogenic cycle. The primary oceanic features were largely obliterated by subsequent metamorphic recrystallization. However, colloform textures and fine-grained aggregates (2-10 µm) were recognized in some pyrites, and are considered as evidence of a primary origin. Further evidence is provided by chemical zoning in a pyrite crystal. In particular, Co zoning allows to clearly identify two generations of pyrite: a primary one (PyI), at the core of the crystal, with concentrations of Co (0.15-0.29 wt%) typical of pyrites from seafloor massive sulfide deposits; a secondary one (PyII), overgrown on the first, with much higher Co concentrations (2.13-2.49 wt%), attributable to metamorphic processes. The textural characters of the two generations of pyrite also reflect the metamorphic history: the anhedral morphology of PyI testifies the corrosion that occurred at some point during the prograde path, while the overgrowth of PyII on PyI, reflects the recrystallization processes that occurred during the subsequent retrograde/exhumation phase

    Get PDF

Study of the Hα emission of the SPIDER negative ions source

This dissertation assesses and compares plasma behaviour under different configurations of the plasma grid magnetic filter in the SPIDER experiment, part of the larger ITER project, through the study of the Hα emission of the hydrogen plasma. ITER is an international collaboration, involving the European Union, China, India, Japan, Korea, Russia and the United States, whose objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of fusion power generation through plasma magnetic confinement. A low density hydrogen plasma will be heated to about 1.5 · 108 K to start the nuclear fusion reaction. The project design will allow a self-sustaining process for long-duration machine runs (up to 1 h) to reach the 500 MW of fusion power output goal [1]. Many systems and subsystems are needed to reach such a high temperature: together with ohmic heating, thermal energy will be fed to the plasma via microwave radiation and neutral particle scattering, provided by two neutral beam injectors (NBI). The SPIDER ion source is part of the NBI system, providing up to 60 A current of H− ions extracted from a hydrogen plasma. Ions are then accelerated up to 100 keV and neutralised to obtain a high intensity neutral beam [2]. However, to achieve the required specification to ignite nuclear fusion and obtain the best power out- put, all systems need to achieve maximum optimisation. In the specific case of SPIDER, efficiency is achieved by maximising the spatial homogeneity of the neutral beam, which, in-turn, depends on the uniformity of the plasma produced in the source, which is required to deviate less than ±10% from ideal uniformity [2]. Many of SPIDER source components are still being tuned to solve stability and homogeneity issues, as well to increase the negative ions production. Thus, the study of the effects of the PG magnetic field topology on the produced plasma is of great interest to obtain the required data to improve plasma uniformity. In this dissertation, the SPIDER plasma source is introduced, along with the components of interest of this study, namely the plasma grid magnetic filter, in two topological configurations: a first prototype and a second improved one, and the plasma generators. Data analysis is then outlined presenting labelling, analysis roadmap and methodology. Finally, results assessment and description is conducted to lead to the final data comparison across different analysis methods

The Thomas-Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation and the Muon g-2 experiment

    Get PDF
We present a theoretical analysis of the relativistic theory of spin and how it can be used to understand the principles behind the recent Muon g-2 (E989) experiment at Fermilab. First, we discuss a covariant generalization of spin and its equation of motion in the presence of electromagnetic fields, the Thomas-Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation. We then generalize this equation to account for an electric dipole moment and a general curved spacetime. Finally, after showing why the g-factor is predicted to be g = 2 by the Dirac equation, we focus on the E989 experiment at Fermilab and how the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon a = (g-2)/2 is actually measured

    No full text
