Egg capsules of the multispine skate, Bathyraja multispinis: the largest of the genus recorded in South American waters

    No full text
Egg capsules of the multispine skate, Bathyraja multispinis (Norman, 1937), described here for the first time, are larger (180 mm in length without horns) than those of any Bathyraja species from the South-west Atlantic Ocean (SWA). The capsule’s surface texture is relatively smooth by the presence of woven-like fibres. However, below the fibres, it is rough to the touch by the presence of longitudinal ridges and prickles of different shapes and sizes, ending in two or more digitiform projections. An identification key to all described Bathyraja egg capsules occurring in the SWA from 34° to 55°S is provided

ANDES: an approach to embed search services on the Web browser

This article addresses search tasks, which are the most frequent type of tasks users do nowadays on the Web. We suggest that the customization of search services would improve the user’s searching experience, and it also might make search tasks more effective and efficient. We analyze user tasks for performing searches and types of search services. Then, we distinguish between primary search tasks (related to the initial user goal) and ancillary search tasks (those that are performed to find additional information necessary to understand how to achieve a primary search task). We also explain different types of search services, including global search services (which has an extensive search scope, possibly the whole Web) and in-site search services (which has a narrow scope of search focused on a specific Web site or data set). We also discuss features embedded into Web browsers to support search tasks and how Web browsers can support extensions allowing users to integrate customized search services. We propose an approach called ANDES that allows users to integrate into the Web browser new search services that are created by customizing search services offered by existing Web sites. By means of Web augmentation techniques, we demonstrate how users can customize the browser to trigger search services to any Web site and integrate the Web page results. We report on two evaluations showing that end-users can specify and use search services following our approach and that the proposed interaction is more convenient in contrast to traditional mechanisms. Beyond the tool used to demonstrate the feasibility of the ANDES approach, this paper aims to discuss new strategies for end-user programming that allow users to customize search services over the Web

Artificial Intelligence techniques based on the integration of symbolic logic and deep neural networks: A systematic review of the literature

    No full text
Artificial Intelligence is tackled from two predominant but very different approaches: symbolic Artificial Intelligence, which is inspired by mathematical logic and is based on the manipulation of abstract linguistic representations, and non-symbolic Artificial Intelligence, which focuses on the construction of predictive mathematical models from large sample data sets. Significantly, the shortcomings of each of these approaches align with the strengths of the other, suggesting that an integration between them would be beneficial. A successful synthesis of symbolic and non-symbolic artificial intelligence would give us the advantages of both worlds. This work aims to identify and classify solutions and architectures that use applied Artificial Intelligence techniques, based on the integration of symbolic and non-symbolic logic (particularly machine learning with artificial neural networks), to provide a comprehensive, exhaustive and organized vision of the solutions available in the literature, making them the subject of a carefully designed and implemented SLR (Systematic Literature Review). The resulting technologies are discussed and evaluated from both perspectives: symbolic and nonsymbolic Artificial Intelligence. The PICOC method (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outputs, Context) plus Limits, which determine the scope of the search, has been used to define the research questions and analyze the results. From a total of 65 candidate studies found, 24 articles (37%) relevant to this study were selected. Each study also focuses on different application domains such as intelligent agents, image classification, theorem provers, cyber-security, image interpretation, mathematics, medicine, robotics and general application. Through the analysis of the selected works, it was possible to classify, organize and explain the different ways in which the deficiencies of non-symbolic Artificial Intelligence are addressed by proposals based on symbolic logic. The study also determined in which stages of the development process said proposals are applied. In addition, the study made it possible to determine which are the logic tools that are preferably applied, for each area and each domain. Although no clear architectural pattern has been found, efforts to find a general-purpose model that combines both worlds are driving trends and research efforts.

Studying the User Experience of an Educational AR-Based App for Smart Glasses

    No full text
The steady evolution of wearable technology—along with augmented reality (AR)—has enabled important advances in teaching and learning. We present STEM Education, an interactive AR application for smart glasses. We evaluate the app’s user experience (UX) with undergraduate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) students. More specifically, we focus on the students’ overall satisfaction, degree of technological acceptance, mental workload, and emotional response. Our observations suggest that the app improves the student’s learning quality, while promoting high levels of engagement and satisfaction. We discuss these findings and their implications in the design of similar technology for educational contexts

Insights on the corrosion resistance of reinforced recycled aggregate concrete

    No full text
Recycled aggregate produced from crushed waste concrete is suitable for use in structural concrete. It reduces the demand for non-renewable resources and also for energy in general. However, RA is more porous than most natural aggregates. The porosity of the concrete cover defines the corrosion resistance of reinforced concrete, and it is therefore disputed how the use of recycled aggregate may affect the durability of reinforced concrete. This paper describes the corrosion-related performance of reinforced concrete with recycled aggregates in the initiation stage (determined by the carbonation and chloride ingress) and propagation stage (determined by the electrical resistivity and cracking) of corrosion. The aspects of interest are not only the porosity of RA but also its effects on the chloride binding, carbonation, electrochemical properties and corrosion cracking development

    No full text
