Towards a New Perspective of Building Tools for Context-Aware Mobile Applications

    Get PDF
Technological growth has been exponential in relation to mobile devices (such as embedded sensors) that have allowed developing context-aware mobile applications for the market. This growth generates a new challenge about how to develop this kind of application to adapt them to the current user’s demand. Nowadays, there are several approaches that could be used to create context-aware mobile applications, but these approaches are designed without considering to provide variability in the kind of generated applications. The aim of this paper is to propose a building tool that has been designed from scratch taking into account variability points in order to generate a wide variety of contextaware mobile applications. The first version of our tool is presented in this paper which is based on UML tools like Eclipse, Sirius Obeo, and JBoss. Finally, a discussion of different aspects is detailed to help designers to have guidelines to select the appropriate development environment for the design of building tools for context-aware mobile applications.

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
This workshop was dedicated to the teaching and use of DROID software, an open and free and easy-to-use tool made by National Archives for the purpose of profiling digital files. The workshop made a tour of the commands and possible actions to be carried out with DROID from the installation of the tool, the loading of files to perform the profiling (even the exclusion of some), the realization of the profile and the detail of its elements and the reporting modes offered by the software. The contrasts made by the file format were also explained, identifying it in contrast to the international registry PRONOM. DROID has a very important specific use for those who manage repositories because it allows to know what formats the repository has to serve as a guide in a preservation plan. In the same way as DROID can perform a checksum, it allows the detection of duplicates or integrity problems. To conclude the workshop, various ways of extracting content (bitstreams) from a repository in DSPACE were explained in order to generate profiles of interest. After the presentation and the questions answered, the participants had the opportunity to do practical file profiling tasks.Curso de DROID. Parte 1. https://youtu.be/SCCbEJ97QIs Curso de DROID. Relationship between Gestalt and usability heuristics in mobile device interfaces

    Get PDF
While usability heuristics are universal concepts, visual references for using them in an application are limited, contradictory, and sometimes confusing, especially for novice developers. The present work has linked Nielsen's heuristics with Gestalt principles, which are the foundation of human perception, developed from psychology, and which have been used in art, design, and architecture, to understand how different visual stimulus can be interpreted by the human being. The heuristics, Match between system and the real world, Recognition rather than recall and Aesthetic and minimalistic design, have been linked with the Gestalt principles of Similarity, Proximity, Common direction, and Simplicity. This link is possible because Gestalt principles have certain conceptual similarities with usability heuristics, in addition to the fact that these fundamentals were identified in some mobile interfaces and are related to specific interactions. This work provides theoretical guidelines, visual references and practical examples on the use of some graphic components that are regularly used in mobile interfaces, such as buttons, menus, and sections; Besides, information is provided regarding how these visual components affect certain usability interactions such as learnability, efficiency, memorability, and usefulness

Framework based on Gestalt principles to design mobile interfaces for a better user experience

    Get PDF
This paper presents the results of the user experience test comparing a real functional application and a high fidelity prototype that used a Framework to design graphic user interfaces on mobile devices. This Framework links Nielsen's heuristics with the principles of perception of Gestalt, offering to developers and usability experts, references to generate and evaluate mockups and prototypes. The constructive and evaluative model of the Framework allows to recognize usability criteria in visual components of the interfaces, during the initial phases of a project that uses agile software development methodologies, reducing the “trial - error” regressions. The experiment allowed obtaining data about satisfaction measures and specific user attitudes regarding the interfaces developed

Nitrogen mineralized in anaerobiosis as indicator of soil aggregate stability

Monitoring soil health status is imperative to pursue sustainable agriculture. Aggregate stability (AS) is fundamental to define several soil functions and, therefore, physical soil health. The objectives of thisworkwere to (i) evaluate the effect of contrasting cropping systems on AS, soil (SOC) and particulate (POC) organic carbon, and anaerobic nitrogen (AN) both in bulk soil and in macroaggregates (MA), and (ii) assess the relationship between AS and AN both in bulk soil and in MA to facilitate soil physical health monitoring. Aggregate stability, AN, SOC and POC were evaluated at three depths (0–5, 5–20, and 0–20 cm) in a Mollisol of the Southeastern Argentinean Pampas under a long-term experiment of cropping systems (crop-pasture rotations under conventional tillage [CT] and no-tillage [NT]). Bulk-soil SOC and POC contents and AN showed the effect of cropping systems, especially the effect of crop-pasture rotation and at 0–5 cm depth. However, NT did not lead to SOC sequestration except at 0–5 cm depth. In turn, pastures in the rotation and NT improved AS. Bulk-soil AN explained 75, 41, and 71% of AS at 0–5, 5–20, and 0–20 cm depths, respectively, and provides an indication of AS status. Instead, AN in MA did not explain bulk-soil AS changes as much as bulk-soil AN, except at 0–5 cm depth. Therefore, it is not worth determining AN in MA. However, routine bulk-soil AN determination at 0–20 cm depth by producers to diagnose nitrogen soil fertility would also provide an additional valuable indication of AS status

One-body entanglement as a quantum resource in fermionic systems

    Get PDF
We show that one-body entanglement, which is a measure of the deviation of a pure fermionic state from a Slater determinant (SD) and is determined by the mixedness of the single-particle density matrix (SPDM), can be considered as a quantum resource. The associated theory has SDs and their convex hull as free states, and number conserving fermion linear optics operations (FLO), which include one-body unitary transformations and measurements of the occupancy of single-particle modes, as the basic free operations. We first provide a bipartitelike formulation of one-body entanglement, based on a Schmidt-like decomposition of a pure Nfermion state, from which the SPDM [together with the (N − 1)-body density matrix] can be derived. It is then proved that under FLO operations the initial and postmeasurement SPDMs always satisfy a majorization relation, which ensures that these operations cannot increase, on average, the one-body entanglement. It is finally shown that this resource is consistent with a model of fermionic quantum computation which requires correlations beyond antisymmetrization. More general free measurements and the relation with mode entanglement are also discussed

Nonlinear effects on the dynamics of quantum harmonic modes coupled through angular momentum

    Get PDF
We investigate nonlinear effects on the dynamics of entanglement and other quantum observables in a system of two harmonic modes coupled through angular momentum. The nonlinearity arises from a Kerr-type anharmonic term in each mode. The emergence and evolution of entanglement, non-Gaussianity, photon number, photon antibunching and squeezing are examined for different initial coherent product states and couplings, through exact diagonalization in a truncated basis. It is shown that the anharmonic terms, even if weak, can lead to very significant effects for such initial states, considerably enhancing and stabilizing entanglement and leading to a non negligible non-Gaussianity of the evolved states. They also affect other observables, stabilizing the dynamics after an initial transient regime, for not too small initial average populations of each mode. Analytic short-time approximate expressions are also provided
