    The skull formed of one piece drawn out at the apex to an acorn terminal. The visor with two apertures for sight projects well forward, the so-called ventail entirely without the usual breathing apertures falls low over the chin-piece. The decoration, which is of a most restrained character, consists of radiating acanthus leaves in strong relief. This fine helmet, which now has a brown patine surface with traces of gilding, is undoubtedly the production of a member of the celebrated Negroli family, and the presence of a hole piercing the crown (together with its general aspect) suggests that it has been used for funerary purposes and hung in a church.     Does Cultural Integration Determine Genetic Testing for Deafness?

    Hearing loss, one of the most common birth defects in the United States, affects approximately three to four in every 1,000 newborns. Although hearing loss can be genetic, environmental or a combination of both, genetics accounts for most cases of congenital or early childhood hearing loss. Various cultures, such as the hearing, hard-of hearing, and Deaf cultures, have diverse attitudes toward genetic testing, particularly prenatal genetic testing, for deafness. As one of the core tenets of genetic counseling is a nondirective approach toward patient care, sensitivity to cultural heritage, values, and mediated variation allows the genetic counselor to ensure their patient maintains autonomy, including decisions about reproductive testing options. Children of Deaf Adults (CODAs) are a unique subculture as they are exposed to both hearing and Deaf cultures. As cultural integration plays an important part in the decision-making process for prenatal genetic testing, understanding CODAs’ background, perspective, and involvement in Deaf culture allows a genetic counselor to adapt their counseling approach. This study is the first to analyze the relationship between the level of CODA integration within the Deaf culture and CODAs’ views on prenatal genetic testing for deafness. By using snowball sampling, CODA participants between the ages of 18-55 were surveyed and results will be analyzed using ANOVA statistical analysis. The aim of this study is to deepen genetic counselors’ understanding of and sensitivity to CODAs with respect to reproductive genetic testing for deafness

    Development of a Novel Ni Based Heterogeneous Catalyst for CO2 Conversion

    Human life and the ecological environment have been affected by global warming and climate changes. Fossil fuel depletion, global warming, climate change, and steep hikes in the price of fuels are driving scientists to investigate on commercial and environmentally friendly fuels. The primary objective of this project is to develop a novel Ni based heterogeneous catalyst to enhance the catalytic conversion of CO2 by H2 for the synthesis of value added chemicals such as CO, methanol and fuels. The Ni-based solution we developed can be tuned to be either acidic or basic to adapt to different catalyst support. The solution was characterized by Ultraviolet- visible spectroscopy and the Ni adsorption was determined at ~200 nm. The heterogeneous catalyst was synthesized on alumina support (acidic) and active carbon support (basic) via Wet Incipient Impregnation method. The synthesized catalyst is to be tested for CO2 hydrogenation at Brookhaven National Lab (BNL). Catalyst characterization such as Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) surface area, pore size and volume, Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), etc. will be carried out at BNL and Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP, a top institute in Catalysis in China) with an aim to establish relationship between activity and properties. This fundamental study will serve as guidance for us to understand the reaction pathway of CO2 hydrogenation

    Evaluating the effects of alcohol on Exon-11 Knockout mice

    Alcohol use remains a global problem. Despite serious repercussions, alcohol continues to be a rewarding substance for many and may be as addictive as other drugs of abuse. Many narcotics such as morphine and heroin activate the mu opiate receptor and cause a rewarding feeling that may be psychologically similar to the reward feeling of alcoholism. Recent work in our laboratory and with collaborators at Sloan Kettering Institute has led to a successful manipulation of a gene targeting one of the exons that makes up the opiate receptor gene (OPRM). By knocking-out exon-11 (E11) of the OPRM gene in mice in previous studies heroin failed to elicit any significant analgesia or rewarding effect in the knockout mice. The present study is evaluating alcohol drinking patterns in exon 11 knockout (KO) mice to see if exon 11 is also involved in the rewarding effects of alcohol. Although alcohol is presumed to have a very different mechanism of action than heroin, the psychological properties of reward might share a common exon-11 and have similar downstream signaling. Consequently, the present study was designed to evaluate the effects of alcohol in E-11 KO mice. E11 and heterozygous wild-type control mice were evaluated using a 2 bottle choice paradigm. Total consumption was measured over a 30 day period with escalating concentrations of alcohol (2-10%). Results showed E11 knockout mice drank significantly higher amounts of alcohol as compared to C57 control mice, raising the possibility that E-11 is also involved in the rewarding effects of alcohol

    City of Glen Cove, NY, Environmental and Transportation Revitalization: Application of Discrete Choice Experiments

    Glen Cove is going through a new face of revitalization. The study looks to investigate whether the train service of the Oyster Bay Line that runs through the region needs to be updated to suit the development of the Glen Cove. The study is also examining passengers’ preferences when it comes to the environmental aspects of a new train service. More than 140 surveys constructed in the format of a Discrete Choice Experiment were collected along four train stations in the Glen Cove area during morning rush hour. Participants were asked if they were content with the current train situation or if they would consider a proposed option. The suggested alternative offered one or two larger stations with a faster journey to Jamaica rather than the existing condition with four stations within a close proximity. Two different surveys were distributed randomly to the commuters, where one included more information regarding the environmental benefits of the proposed option. The preliminary analysis shows that a significant number of the participants preferred the suggested alternative, with less stations, and shorter travel time. Even though the additional information about the environmental impacts played some role, the result was not statistically significant. According to the outcomes, other factors had greater influence on the decision making than environmental consciousness. However, these factors might be indirectly linked to a better environment, which also should be taken into consideration. This will hopefully give an insight in commuters preferences, and what role the environment plays in rebuilding the infrastructure
