Art Therapy Interventions that Facilitate Non-Verbal Expressions and how Art Therapy Can Improve Communication for Children with Autism
Get PDFAutism prevalence in America has increased rapidly over the years and numerous research studies have been conducted to measure the benefits of art therapy practice within this community. Advances in the mental health field have been also made to help offer improved treatment. Art therapy uses the process of engaging in artmaking with various mediums to make products that can be used in both assessment and treatment. The art can serve as a reflection of a person’s development, abilities and personalities. In this paper, the literature review will cover: Autism, communication, available treatments, and art therapy. The research methodology employed is qualitative research in the form of a single case study. The case study illustrates art therapy interventions used with a child, to help increase social skills and attention span in classroom activities. This paper discusses how art therapy interventions help facilitate non-verbal expression in children with autism and how art therapy improves communication among this population
Teaching New-Comer Haitian Teens: An Exploratory Study of Middle School Mathematics Teachers’ Instructional Endorsement of Haitian Creole
Get PDFThe literature about Haitian immigrant children’s achievement in the United States and elsewhere is very limited, and so is the information regarding teachers’ viewpoints about these students’ achievement in relation to teachers’ practices. The present exploratory study’s purpose was to assess whether there was a relationship between middle school math teachers’ personal and professional background and constructs and their appraisals of new-comer Haitian teens’ (NCHT) learning outcomes. The mathematics teachers’ personal backgrounds include their fluency in Haitian Creole. Their professional background includes their years of experience teaching mathematics, as well as their years of academic preparation in teaching mathematics in Haitian Creole, and their constructs include their personal teaching efficacy, their approaches to instruction, their perception of administrative pressure to prepare for high stakes testing, and their instructional endorsement of Haitian Creole (IEHC). Findings from the quantitative analysis revealed that there is statistically significant evidence of associations between mathematics teachers’ fluency in Haitian Creole and their instructional endorsement of Haitian Creole, between mathematics teachers’ fluency in Haitian Creole and their appraisals of NCHT learning outcomes, between mathematics teachers’ years of experience and their instructional endorsement of Haitian Creole, between mathematics teachers’ years of academic preparation to teach math in Haitian Creole and their instructional endorsement of Haitian Creole, and between math teachers’ years of academic preparation to teach math in Haitian Creole and their appraisals of NCHT learning outcomes. The study’s findings revealed that 85 percent of the participants appraised NCHT mathematics learning outcomes at levels one or two, which is an indication that NCHT may be underachieving in math. The findings also revealed that some of these math teachers were involved in some manner of English instruction during their math lessons. These participants viewed Haitian Creole as a temporary mode of communication for NCHT. In addition, teachers who had no academic preparation to teach math in Haitian Creole said that they either needed help to provide feedback or did not provide feedback in Haitian Creole to new-comer Haitian teens. Also, some participants in this study indicated that instruction in a new language may be a reason for the underachievement of NCHT. The researcher identified a need for policies that would promote the development of open source online math activities and math video games for new-comer Haitian teens. She also identified a need for a school-based organization that would support these students, their parents and the school community to improve the quality of their interactions. This research, which was conducted with a sample that included both non-speakers and speakers of Haitian Creole, makes an important contribution to the literature regarding teachers’ beliefs and practices when working with NCHT. For this study, the researcher created an Instructional Endorsement of Haitian Creole questionnaire which can be used in a wide range of contexts, including research and professional development activities to address issues associated with teachers’ instructional beliefs about Haitian Creole. The evidence of relationships among the variables in the study serves as an opportunity for this researcher to continue this work. This process may help fill the void that exists in the literature concerning teaching and learning experiences involving NCHT
How the Workplace Adopts Stereotypical Male Leadership Roles
Get PDFTraditionally, women have not held many leadership positions in the workplace. This is typically due to the existence of gender-based stereotypes. These stereotypes hurt women in both their psyche and in their wallet by limiting their opportunities for advancement into top level executive positions. The glass ceiling, a barrier many women have come to face in Corporate America, has caused many women to accept their fate as “lesser than” when compared to their male colleagues. Very few women have been successful in breaking the glass ceiling. Some modern organizations have taken on the challenge of ridding their culture of these stereotypes, helping to close the gender pay-gap; consequently empowering their female workers. Compared to the number of companies that have yet to adopt newer standards, the initiative seems daunting. There are some companies that recognize the problem and want to change, but lack knowledge of how to successfully modify the unconscious bias that exists in their workplace. For such organizations there are tools that exist to assist in that transformation. Tools such as: performing objective performance evaluations, succession planning processes, continued-education, and employee development workshops. Changing people’s perceptions cannot happen overnight. As more companies recognize the bias in their workplaces and take on the challenge of eradicating stereotypes, women will achieve more success in Corporate America

Due to rising security breaches with increased media coverage, the public and the government is starting to recognize the importance of protecting critical data. Implementing an Information Security Management System enables companies to sufficiently safeguard their information in the long-term and adhere to governmental regulations. Companies seek to implement an IT Service Management System in order to implement best practices in their organization and enable themselves to compete in the market on a global basis. ISO 27001 and ISO 20000-1 enable a company to operate in more successful ways by reducing the cost of operations and reducing the risk of severe damages to a company’s reputation in case of any cyberattacks. The standards are complex in nature and most companies do not have enough internal resources to implement the standards on their own. Also, the introduction of an Information Security Management System requires adoption by the entire organization and not just single departments. The scope of such a system requires deepener knowledge of the standards in order to successfully implement the management system and for the company to benefit from its long-term effectiveness. Living and Working Abroad: An Analysis Through Personal Experience and Research
Get PDFIf you were to stop what you’re doing right now and someone was to give you a blank map of the world, how many countries would you be able to label? How many countries have you been to? If you had to pick 5 different locations for dream vacations, would you know how much it would cost? If you were required to move to a new location outside of your home country, where would you go, what should you consider before moving? Before starting my research, I was barely able to label all 50 states in my own country, let alone any other country around the world. Eager to learn, I dedicated my research to solving these questions. I’ve split my research into two parts. Part I include my first-hand experience of going from never leaving the United States to financing my travels to thirty countries in Europe in the most efficient way possible. Part II is a mix of research, and personal experience from Part I, on what to consider when looking to move abroad. Can a long-island college student finance his way across the world when he’s never left before? Through my thesis research, and first-hand experience, my successes and pitfalls, I can help others travel. I can help individuals learn from my method most efficient, and cost-effective way to travel the world. It will give a sense of direction and considerations when moving from the United States abroad
Principals’ Perceptions of the Barriers and Impediments to Distribute Leadership and Share Decision Making Under an Era of Heightened Accountability: An Exploratory Study Using Q-Technique

Accountability has forever changed the context in which the traditional role of a principal leads. This study examines the beliefs, attitudes, and Educational institutions—and, more specifically, principals—are faced with meeting the mandates and demands set forth by local, state, and federal initiatives. Accountability has forever changed the context in which the traditional role of a principal leads. This study examines the beliefs, attitudes, and opinions of public high school principals on distributed leadership within a context of accountability. In addition, it investigates their trust levels. The study of subjectivity can be employed utilizing a systematic mixed-methods approach called Q technique. This methodology has the power to reveal the shared viewpoints or intersubjectivity and models held by public high school principals. Data were analyzed from 28 suburban New York public high school principals located in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester counties concerning their beliefs regarding the potential barriers and impediments in distributing leadership responsibilities within the context of heightened accountability. In addition, it assessed their trust levels as these levels related to distributing their leadership. This study identified and examined 3 models of shared viewpoints held by public high school principals. Background characteristics were utilized to describe the clusters of participating principals. These characteristics consisted of: years of experience as a public-school administrator, years of prior experience as a teacher, highest level of education, and decade graduated from high school. Information was also gathered regarding principals’ beliefs in the effectiveness of distributed leadership. The 3 Q models revealed, consensus and disagreement. To identify and understand where changes in leadership must be made, it is necessary to research school leadership from an alternative perspective by understanding the intersubjectivity of high school principals

A literature search was conducted on peerreviewed journals of many databases to search for common sports related injuries in the ankle and knee joints. The joints focused on have been written in separate chapters to not confuse the reader of the location of the injury. Each injury has been given its own section to provide as much information as possible. The anatomy of each body region is also explained and pictures have been included to give the reader a visual representation of where the injuries occur. Through this literature based research, the most common sports related injuries have been found with respect to the ankle and the knee
How Blue Are Your Buttons? An Experiment in Bee Color Perception and Pollinator Preference
Get PDFMy thesis research focuses on the importance of flower color in relation to pollinator preferences. I was inspired to carry out this ecological field experiment to learn more about bee vision patterns as well as have the experience of conducting my own research outdoors. Experimental trials were conducted on the LIU Post campus to determine whether bees are more attracted to pink or blue Bachelors Buttons (Centaurea cyanus). While we determined that there was a significant difference between interactions with pink and blue flowers, future researchers must test a larger population size of flowers to be sure of this trend and may test flowers in different locations to understand bee behavioral dynamics. Further studies may include training schedules so that bees will interact more with experimental flowers
