Eating Garbage Graciously : Verbatim Theatre and Improvisation
Improvisation and verbatim theatre are two forms of theatrical performance that are distinct from each other in format and style, but can be combined to create a dynamic new form of performance. In this paper, I address how my personal experience with improvisation, or improv, led me on a journey to create my own long-form improv format, “The Vermando”. This paper details its use in my honors performance thesis, Eating Garbage Graciously. My original improv format, “The Vermando”, bridges together rehearsed verbatim theatre pieces and improvised performances to unleash a hybrid theatrical performance that uses improv to explore the stories of various human beings
Twice As Good
In this thesis, I examine the intersections of race, class, and gender; specifically, the three components that affect the lives and livelihood of black women. The intersections, though they affect each other, must be considered alongside the means of oppression. The oppressive states of patriarchy and racial hierarchy contributed to each factor of intersection. More specifically, it contributed to the caricaturization of Black women; these false personas contributed to the skewed perceptions of black women. By means of public and private resistance, also known as hidden transcripts, I examine the ways that black women gain their agency. Though there are many forms and variables that contribute to many different types of oppression, this paper examines matters that pertain to the Black community, and more specifically, Black women. This paper discusses issues such as patriarchy, very narrow scopes of femininity, the male gaze, obscure caricatures of black women, and finally ways to rebel from these oppressive systems
Quiet Riot
Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham have long been revered as leaders in propelling modern dance forward. Because their techniques were both built out of their need to express their struggles with their current social norms, their versions of modern dance can be seen as embodied feminism. Modern dance was born as a rebellion against ballet, and the restrictive elements of that technique. Well known for freeing the torso, Isadora Duncan based her technique off of naturalistic movement. Martha Graham’s technique comes from a focus on breath that evolved into contraction and release, which is the contraction of the spine that releases into a flat back. The theater piece that I created was a connection between the work of those two women and feminism. The piece was also an expansion of the exploration of using the physicality of modern dance to embody elements of feminism
Physics and Mathematics Behind Tomographic Techniques of Medical Imaging
Aside from that of x-rays, the important methods of medical imaging provide 3-dimensional views of the human body. The mathematics behind this is called reconstructive tomography. Indeed, “C.A.T.” is an anagram for computed axial tomography. There are two other important tomographic techniques in use. Magnetic resonance imaging and positron imaging. In this thesis we explain the physics and some of the mathematics behind each
Teachers’ Attitudes and Beliefs about Adolescents’ Use of Digital Technology and the Effect on Copresence Face-To-Face Social Skills: An Exploratory Study Using Q-Methodology
As people increasingly use digital technology to communicate with others, social networks and Smartphone\u27s are changing the ways people interact with each other and what they disclose about themselves. The purpose of this study is to examine teachers’ attitudes and beliefs regarding how digital technology affects adolescents’ copresence face-to-face social skills as they grow up in a digital world and its impact upon the academic setting. This research will utilize Q-technique, a scientific mixed methods interdisciplinary approach, which uses both quantitative and qualitative methods to identify viewpoints that are shared among teachers. Teachers’ points of view can be investigated using Q-technique as this technique preserves the meaning of participants as it reveals their perspectives via Q-sort. The demographic characteristics that will be examined are gender, professional teaching experience, educational degree, and technology experience. This study will analyze data from thirty to forty teachers in Nassau and Suffolk county school districts in New York. The results of this study may have contributions to curriculum development, teacher education, and policymaking
The Effect of Leader-Member Exchanges and Informal Networks on School Leadership: A Judgment Experiment of Teachers’ Perceptions About Principal Leadership Qualities
Enlightened school leaders recognize that schools must be addressed as heteronomous professional organizations whose members are highly skilled and educated professionals who expect and demand agency in designing and carrying out the work of their school. School leadership must be both transformative and transactional; its success lies in the effectiveness with which the school leader participates in leader-member exchanges (LMX) and engages with the schools’ social networks. 5 qualities of leadership that influence the effectiveness of school leaders were identified in the literature and included: (a) contribution; (b) loyalty; (c) affect; (d) professional respect; and (e) networking. Previous research has not considered the expert judgment of teachers regarding these factors. This dissertation represents an exploration of teachers’ perceptions of effective school leadership. A social judgment analysis (SJA) with a mixed-effects, multilevel model was used to analyze responses to an anonymous online survey (Ncases = 212, Nobservations = 7,632), identifying the judgment preferences of Grades K-12 New York State public school teachers regarding the effectiveness of school principals as reflected in their leadership qualities. Analysis confirmed minimally statistically significant covariate interactions between teacher characteristics and the 5 leadership qualities. 6 distinct judgment models and 4 discrete leader themes were identified, confirming the existence of unobserved heterogeneity in teachers’ judgment preferences. The final chapter discusses 10 paradoxes of school leadership and offers recommendations for resolving or reconciling them. The finding of this study can inform theory, policy, practice, and future research in the areas of effective school leaders and school building leadership
Utilizing Art Therapy to overcome Cumulative Trauma experienced by Adolescents admitted into the Foster Care system
This research studied the effects of art therapy on a foster care child whom experienced multiple cumulative traumas in her biological household and is struggling to assimilate with her current foster family. This research consists of a qualitative secondary analysis of a previous case study conducted by Meghan J. Krikorian (2008). While Krikorian designed an ABA format study measuring self-concept before and after receiving individual art therapy sessions, this study focuses on maladaptive behavior and the transformation it undergoes with a stable and intimate therapeutic relationship. Two African American children participated in Krikorian’s study, an eight-year-old female and a nine-year-old male, this study analyzed the process and art work of the eight year old child, Tanya. Throughout this treatment, Tanya is working on coping with her worries, anxieties, and frustrations. The results of this study suggest that individual art therapy had some positive effects on Tanya’s ability to cope in treatment foster care, which may increase with a larger number of sessions
Tax Cuts and Jobs Act
Some of the most controversial discussions that are often brought up are derived from the topic of tax. Taxes are arguably the most important and impactful parts of many people’s lives. Considering this, people are always curious when it comes to taxes and how changes in society, economics and government effect their personal lives. In 2017 Congress passed the largest tax overhaul in over 30 years, making it very clear that most households will be affected in one way or another. These changes are ones that people should take awareness of as they all directly or indirectly effect the lives of every American. The changes that were most prolific were derived from the following topics: lower tax rates, standard deductions, itemized deductions, affordable care act tax penalty, estate tax exemption, alternative minimum tax, child and elder care credits, corporate income tax rate, pass-through deduction and bonus depreciation. This paper includes a review as to why Congress decided to allow each change, what their intent was for the change, and the effect it had in the first year. In addition, I will try to advise the taxpayer how to adjust to the change and analyze the behavioral changes of taxpayers based on the new law. Once these are all discussed, I found it to be important to share real-life situations to allow readers to try and see how these changes may play out in their own lives and the lives of others. Lastly, I will go on to interview two practicing CPAs who had recently finished up their first tax season with the new law in play allowing the reader to see the changes from a professional’s perspective. Ultimately, the new law has caused significant changes in taxpayer behavior and has had noticeable effects on the economy and taxpayers as a whole
A Bibliometric Study on Learning Analytics
Learning analytics tools and techniques are continually developed and published in scholarly discourse. This study aims at examining the intellectual structure of the Learning Analytics domain by collecting and analyzing empirical articles on Learning Analytics for the period of 2004-2018. First, bibliometric analysis and citation analyses of 2730 documents from Scopus identified the top authors, key research affiliations, leading publication sources (journals and conferences), and research themes of the learning analytics domain. Second, Domain Analysis (DA) techniques were used to investigate the intellectual structures of learning analytics research, publication, organization, and communication (Hjørland & Bourdieu 2014). The software of VOSviewer is used to analyze the relationship by publication: historical and institutional; author and institutional relationships and the dissemination of Learning Analytics knowledge. The results of this study showed that Learning Analytics had captured the attention of the global community. The United States, Spain, and the United Kingdom are among the leading countries contributing to the dissemination of learning analytics knowledge. The leading publication sources are ACM International Conference Proceeding Series, and Lecture Notes in Computer Science. The intellectual structures of the learning analytics domain are presented in this study the LA research taxonomy can be re-used by teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders to support the teaching and learning environments in a higher education institution
