Socioeconomic Status and Educational Opportunities Through the Eyes of Students and Teachers: Diverse Realities, Shared Insights
Sowl and Crain (2021) argue that despite recognizing the uniqueness of the place when it comes to rural demographics and needs, policies regarding education and the economy often prioritize urban areas, defining rural in opposition to urban without adequately addressing the specific needs of rural youth. Studies examining geographical disparities in educational outcomes traditionally concentrated on achievement gaps within urban and suburban areas, highlighting more startling gaps in cities with heightened racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic inequality and segregation. Literature also extensively discusses neighborhood effects on educational outcomes in densely populated regions, offering valuable insights into the distribution of educational opportunities and disparities across major metropolitan areas; however, these studies often overlook rural areas (Drescher et al., 2022). Differences in achievement and learning rates among student groups, considered opportunity gaps, highlight local disparities in educational opportunities caused by unequal access to resources and exposure to stressors. These studies shed light on the distribution of educational opportunities and reveal racial-ethnic and socioeconomic gaps in opportunities within the largest metropolitan areas in the country, but startling research does not address rural regions (Lauermann et al., 2020). This critical ethnographic study explores the perceptions of teachers and students regarding their perceptions of the influence of socioeconomic factors on academic achievement and educational opportunities as it pertains to a small rural school in the Midwest. Using a qualitative approach, this researcher collected data from student focus groups and teacher interviews while also conducting detailed document analysis to provide thick findings from this specific context

Violence and Taoist Ethics in Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Word for World is Forest
This note critically investigates the ethico-moral intricacies of violence/peace in Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Word for World is Forest (1976) while arguing that her radical political sensibilities are informed by her ardent Taoist worldview. Amidst the urgent tussle for domination by the colonizing Terrans and the struggle for survival by the native Athsheans in the fictional planet Athshe, Le Guin incorporates her incisive critique of imperialist exploitation and militarism while upholding the non-dualistic ethics of Taoism. Moving beyond the moral imperatives and either/or debates, Le Guin illustrates how from time-to-time violence turns to be the singular means of self-preservation for persecuted communities, thereby resolving the glaring opposition between violence and peace in the novella
A New Application of the Coimbra Method for Cranial Entheseal Changes
The study of entheseal changes (EC) has a lengthy history within biological anthropology, aiding in the reconstruction of habitual activities, lifestyles, and physiological stress experienced by past populations. However, most existing research has focused on postcranial entheses, leaving cranial entheses largely unexplored. This study aims to apply the Coimbra Method, a recent and standardized scoring system, to analyze cranial entheses and investigate the relationship between age, sex, and entheseal changes. By observing and scoring entheses associated with the insertions of five cranial muscles, this research will contribute to a deeper understanding of skeletal plasticity in response to mechanical stress. The findings are expected to provide new insights into cranial musculoskeletal adaptations and expand the applicability of the Coimbra Method beyond postcranial sites. Ultimately, this research has the potential to enhance anthropological reconstructions of behavior and biomechanics, offering a more comprehensive approach to the study of EC in the human skeleton
