The Relationship of Factors Contributing to Burnout and Grit Among Division I Collegiate Athletes

    Get PDF
Within the sports field, one popular interest is burnout among athletes. The objective of this study was to determine the association of risk factors to burnout and grit among Division I collegiate athletes. Seventeen males and twenty-five females (age= 19.88 ± 1.02) participated in this study (football, n = 8; cross country/track n = 1; soccer, n = 1; basketball, n = 2; golf, n = 1; volleyball, n = 13; baseball, n = 5; and rifle, n = 11). A survey and the athlete burnout questionnaire (ABQ) was used to evaluate risk factors of burnout and to assess burnout syndrome. The grit scale was used to score an athlete’s grittiness. This study found there to be a significant, positive relationship between burnout and grit among Division I collegiate athletes. Furthermore, this investigation’s findings determined that the only risk factor associated with burnout that is statistically significant is the number of sports played before playing collegiately. Findings from this study can be used to prevent burnout in younger athletes while self-reflecting on personal grit score

Effects of Point of Purchase Marketing on Selection of Vegetables in a University Greek House Foodservice

Weight gain is common for undergraduate college students because of factors such as body maturation, increased consumption of fast food, and less physical activity. Weight gain may continue after college if diet and exercise habits do not improve, so learning healthy habits during college can contribute to a healthy adulthood. Recent research has reported that weight gain is inversely related to fruit and vegetable consumption. Because a large portion of college students’ diets come from on-campus dining options, fruit and vegetable intake may be lacking because many of these venues may not serve these items or serve them in a way that is not appealing to students. Greek communities on college campuses usually encompass a significant portion of the student population, so research is needed on how to influence Greek students to make healthy dining choices. The purpose of this project was to determine if a three week point-of-purchase intervention targeting vegetables would have an effect on the amount of vegetables selected from one sorority’s salad bar. Weights of vegetables served and left over were measured during the first week of the study. The point-of-purchase materials were placed at the beginning of the foodservice line for a two week period and amounts of vegetable served and left over were weighed during that two weeks. Data was analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to look for differences in weekly means of total vegetable consumption, followed by Student-Newman-Kewles Test (SNK) to separate the means (determine which means were significantly different) when differences were found. Student’s t-tests were conducted on the weekly means for each vegetable to determine differences over time. Only tomato selection significantly increased from week 1 to week 2. However, significant differences in the means were seen between weeks 2 and 3 for broccoli, edamame, and tomatoes and between weeks 1 and 3 for cucumber, edamame, and tomatoes. Point-of-purchase marketing did increase the selection of vegetables. With the increasing obesity rates of college students (including those who are Greek) it is important that this area of continues to be explored

Gender Bias and Sex Trafficking in China

    Get PDF
China’s history shows a pattern of preference for sons over daughters. Chinese language and policies show evidence of this bias. This penchant has created a sizable gender disparity within China’s population. The implementation of the One-Child Policy only exacerbated the gap between males and females. China’s age-old preference for sons has negatively impacted modern-day China. The gender disparity generated a “demand” for women, which has been answered by sex trafficking women in China to be sold as brides and sex workers

Sentiment of the Union: Analyzing Tone in Presidential State of the Union Addresses

    Get PDF
As the machine learning and data science craze sweeps the nation, the implications and implementations are vast. This paper takes a look at both of them through the lens of a topic of national importance, at the very least for the United States. This topic is the words used by past Presidents of the United States, which are being pulled from their State of the Union Addresses. The focus of this research is on Natural Language Processing (NLP) and it’s applied processes. Natural Language Processing allows for effective analysis of text-based data. Using NLP, a sentiment analysis was conducted on the Addresses to gain further insight into the tone used by Presidents over the course of history. This sentiment analysis ultimately resulted in a set of sentiment scores pertaining to major topics in the United States. These sentiment score sets were then input in to several different learning algorithms in an attempt to utilize Presidential Sentiment to predict political party affiliation. This paper shares the methodology used to conduct this sentiment analysis and discusses the tools created for the analysis and visualizations

Breastfeeding Support Programs: Systematic Review of Socioeconomic Literature

    Get PDF
This thesis describes a systematic review and analysis of literature concerning breastfeeding and programs focused on improving breastfeeding participation. It examines breastfeeding programs with respect to intervention evaluation and the economic impact of breastfeeding programs, and scrutinizes social factors such as race, ethnicity, cultural identity, income, and age which potentially influence the outcomes of these breastfeeding programs. It explores how breastfeeding programs have reduced rehospitalization of low birth weight and preterm infants through the implementation of one or a combination of the following services to mothers and babies: breast pump supplies, education, and training on breastfeeding, transportation to and from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and in-home visits with social workers, community health workers, and lactation specialists. A systematic literature review was conducted, and 150 articles were found, but 89 were reviewed based on their attention to one or a combination of the following: cost benefits analysis of breastfeeding programs, intervention evaluation of breastfeeding programs, economic impact of breastfeeding programs, methods implemented to reduce rehospitalization of low birth weight and preterm infants, social factors influencing the outcome of breastfeeding programs, health benefits of breastfeeding to the mother and infant, and breastfeeding trends in the United States and federal policies on breastfeeding. The findings from these articles showed that to maximize the cost savings and economic impact of breastfeeding, programs should take into account the cultural, individual, and economic background of the mother while simultaneously initiating improvement techniques such as: better training of healthcare professionals, longer durations of paid maternity and paternity leaves, and increased provision of education and support to nursing mothers

A Comparative Study of American and French Fashion Conspicuous Consumption Habits on Instagram

    Get PDF
As social media has become an integral part of every day communications, consumers have begun to conspicuously consume through the Internet. One social media platform, Instagram, puts a central focus on media sharing and allows its users to post photos and videos to their profiles. This makes Instagram an ideal place for Internet users to put their belongings on display. However, a user’s nationality and cultural upbringing could influence how one utilizes this platform to conspicuously consume. To determine if this were true, Instagram photos from American and French users were analyzed to find any potential discrepancies. Fashion items were the focus of the study. As photos were collected, it was noted if the user was American, French, or neither, if the user was male or female, and if a fashion item was present in the post. If present, it was decided if the item was being worn, if a fashion brand was tagged in the photo, if a brand name or logo was visible, if a brand related hashtag was used, if a fashion brand was mentioned in the photo caption, and if the aesthetic of the outfit was street style or more luxurious. It was revealed that both American and French Instagram users vary little from one another in terms of how they conspicuously consume using the platform. Despite major cultural differences, these two nationalities are shown to be more similar than not. Also, the two countries have very similar habits to that of other nations around the world. The results make it apparent that Americans and the French have similar habits, but are unable to determine the exact personal, social, or cultural motives behind how these Instagram users conspicuously consume. While these users may not differ in how they act, the reason behind the action may differ immensely. Further research should be completed to discover this information

The Importance of Cultural Context in Engaging Multicultural Consumers

    Get PDF
This research will explore the importance of cultural context in engaging multicultural audiences through communication cues strategically placed in advertising messages. Consumer response to cultural cues embedded in messages targeted to multicultural consumers will be examined to identify influences that determine its effectiveness in appealing to multicultural markets. Taking into consideration that “consumer brand personality perceptions and reactions must be considered within a cultural context.” (De Mooij, 2004) brands communication to multicultural consumers have to be informed within the consumer’s cultural context. The current multicultural population growth, growing purchasing power, and the different ways people respond to different messages has made this communication approach essential to reach multicultural consumers authentically, respectfully, and effectively, based on the reasoning that “to be successful, marketers must consider the cultural context their brands exist in, understanding cultural markers adds depth and meaning to the conversations you want to have with your consumers” (Marketing Mag, 2016). The goal of this research is to accomplish an understanding of the importance of cultural context in engaging multicultural consumers, it will focus on the argument supporting the utilization of an emotional marketing strategy and the development of a congruent brand identity and image through an IMC approach in order to achieve said engagement and positive response. This study explores the receptivity of advertising messages designed to appeal to multicultural consumers. Findings suggest that advertising receptiveness by multicultural and general market consumers increases through embedded cultural, social and racial symbols and cues strategically embedded in the communication. Results suggest that use of authentic, cross-cultural cues communicated within cultural context will affect the underlying consumer decision-making process, which influences the effectiveness of multicultural advertising practices. Primary Research was gathered to reconcile the importance of social and cultural cues in different advertisements. Data was collected from the following methods of research: focus groups, survey/questionnaires, interviews with subject matter experts and interviews with college students from varying backgrounds to gain insight within the younger millennial population on the perception and consumer-brand relationships of multiculturally targeted ads

"¡El Nuevo Chile Papi!: An Examination of the Influence of Public Opinion on the Development of Chilean Immigration Policies

    Get PDF
This study sought to determine whether public opinion in Chile had influenced the development of national immigration policies in the contemporary period. It used a comparative historical approach with a timeframe from 1989 to 2015. Because of the study’s cause-and-effect element, public opinion served as the independent variable and immigration policy served as the dependent policy. The study measured public opinion through the usage of public opinion surveys previously conducted by the research institutes of The World Value Survey and Latinobarómetro Corporation. The study also synthesized written immigration policy and incorporated visa data from approved visa applications from the years 2005 to 2010. The study’s main findings showed that, historically, public opinion has not influenced the development of Chilean immigration policy. In fact, international organizations such as the United Nations has historically served as an influencer on the development of immigration policy due to the historically low saliency of immigration and issues related to among the Chilean population. However, this has begun to change in the latter years of the contemporary period as the flow of immigration has magnified to the country and has become increasingly diverse in its origins and socioeconomic background. These changes coupled with others have caused saliency of the issue to increase and cause public opinion to become a growing influence on national immigration policy in the country of Chile

Regulating Sex Work: United States’ Policy and International Comparisons

    Get PDF
This thesis examines the issues with current United States’ sex work policies and considers peer countries’ policies as potential alternatives by surveying existing research and utilizing case studies. Specifically, this thesis analyzes how American sex work policy restricts bodily autonomy, creates dangerous markets, and hinders efforts to deter sex trafficking. As policy alternatives, this study evaluates German and Swedish policies. German policy provides an example of a fully legalized and regulated sex market, where the buying and selling of sex are legally protected. The study on Swedish policy provides an example of the “Nordic Model,” where the buying of sex is criminalized but the selling of sex is legal. This thesis concludes that, as a policy alternative, the “Nordic Model” could better suit the United States. Even after over a decade of legalization, Germany has failed to create practical regulations that protect sex workers. While the “Nordic Model” is not without issue, the alternative is most politically feasible and opens the door for collaboration between the government and at-risk workers
