CROSS: On Vulnerability: Distinguishing Differences Between the Knight of Faith and the Knight of Resignation in Kierkegaard’s Fear and Trembling (Under the direction of William Lawhead) In Søren Kierkegaard’s work, Fear and Trembling, he describes two kinds of individuals, which he calls the knight of faith and the knight of infinite resignation. The purpose of this thesis is to consider the differences between the two. Several scholars of the work identify different characteristics that distinguish the knight of faith and the knight of infinite resignation. These characteristics include care (Mooney), courage (Carlisle), and autonomy (Lippitt). This thesis uses those three notions to suggest that another difference between the knight of faith and knight of infinite resignation is the characteristic of vulnerability

    The Role of Cannabinoids and Terpenes in Cannabis Mediated Analgesia in Rats

    Objective: This research examined the contributions of terpenes (volatile oil) and cannabinoids in cannabis mediated analgesia in rats. Methods: In experiment 1, separate groups of rats received IP administration of either vehicle, 5, 10, or 15 mg/kg cannabis extract, one of three concentrations of volatile oil alone in these cannabis extracts, one of three concentrations of these extracts with volatile oils removed, 2.5, 5, or 7.5 mg/kg Δ9-THC, or 10 or 18 mg/kg morphine 30 m before hotplate and tail-flick tests of thermal nociception. One week later, separate groups of rats received a second administration of these test articles IP 30 m before testing in the acetic acid writhing test of inflammatory nociception. Results: Both tail-flick and hotplate latencies were longer than controls for all drug groups/doses except the isolated volatile oil groups. The 15 mg/kg dose of the cannabis extract and 7.5mg/kg Δ9 -THC group showed analgesic effects similar to the 18 mg/kg morphine group. In the inflammatory nociceptive assay, all drug groups/doses showed decreased writhes compared to the control except the isolated volatile oil groups. Conclusions: These tests revealed that terpenes do not significantly contribute to the analgesic action of cannabis extracts. Further, these tests revealed that THC alone produced robust analgesia equivalent to the whole cannabis extract. This leads to the conclusion that THC alone mediates these analgesic actions of cannabis extracts and other components do not significantly affect the analgesic activity of the extract

    Electro- and Photocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction with Mononuclear and Dinuclear Rhenium Polypyridyl Complexes

    The main challenge of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) to value-added products lies in designing more efficient catalysts that are long-lived, selective, and operate near the thermodynamic potential for the reaction. In this work, mononuclear and dinuclear Re complexes containing diamine ligands linked to a pendant anthracene moiety have been synthesized and studied for both electrocatalytic and photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Electrocatalytically, the performances of both catalysts were studied in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and acetonitrile (MeCN) solutions to determine their turnover frequencies (TOFs) for CO2 reduction. Catalyst performance was compared to previously reported rhenium systems, and both systems studied here were shown to outperform the benchmark catalyst, Re(bpy)(CO)3Cl, in electrochemical and photochemical CO2 reduction to carbon monoxide (CO)

    Inhibition of Blood Coagulation Factor XII: Evaluation of Flavonoids as a Drug Candidate

    This study investigated natural product inhibitors of blood coagulation Factor XII (FXII). FXII initiates the Kallikrein Kinin-System (KKS) within the intrinsic coagulation pathway. Increased expression of this system leads to proinflammatory and procoagulant activities. Inflammation occurs through downstream activation in the KKS. Following the activation of FXII-dependent pathway, bradykinin (BK) binds to the BK receptor 2 (B2) and produces inflammatory signaling. Abnormally increased BK can result in life threatening Hereditary Angioedema (HAE), characterized by severe reoccurring swelling. FXII is critical for pathogenic thrombosis, but is dispensable for hemostasis. This unique property of FXII makes it an attractive drug target. We hypothesized that the identification of a specific inhibitor for activated FXII could lead to the reduction of Hereditary Angioedema Type III (HAE III) symptoms and hinder thrombosis formation without an increased risk for bleeding. In this study, we presented an extension of our previous work, which dealt with high-throughput screening of plant extracts and a large compound collections to target FXIIa. We identified myricitin as a candidate compound via a systemic experimental screening. Chromogenic activated FXII activity assays were preformed to test the effects of myricitrin analogues on plasma enzymes (FXIIa, FXIa, and kallikrein). To assess the inhibitory effects of candidate compounds on these proteases, the release of paranitrianalide from the chromogenic substrates were measured as an indicator of FXIIa, FXIa, or kallikrein activity. The results of this study showed that myricetin, an analogue of myricitrin, significantly inhibited FXIIa at the sub-micromolar to the low micromolar concentration range. Overall, myricetin has the potential to be a useful multifunctional therapeutic drug in patients with HAE and thrombolytic diseases

It is a study of faith, doubt, journey, and their intersection and manifestation in the modern world. It is inspired both by personal experiences as well as the works of various authors, most notably Carlos Eire, Walter Macken, Dodie Smith, Sharon Creech, Sigrid Undset, St. Thomas More, and St. Thomas Aquinas. This work seeks to give modern context and understanding to traditional understandings of “pilgrimage,” as described in The Catechism of the Catholic Church. Far from changing or turning away from this traditional understanding of the word, this work serves instead to uphold it within a modern context

    Haunted Mississippi: Ghosts, Identity, and Collective Identity

    This thesis wrestles with the duality of the terms “haunting” and “ghosts” in relation to Mississippi and its collective identity and narrative. Ghostlore and haunted tourism provide insight into shared cultural constructs and indicate an absence of certain perspectives from more generally held ideas of identity. Analyses of ghost stories from around the state explore these hauntings of history and ghosted narratives, so it is ghosts v. ghosted and hauntings v. haunted. I use ghost stories from Natchez, MS to explore postsouthern spaces and performances of “southernness” and the narratives around female apparitions to study the role of southern womanhood in collective identity, while the apparitions of the University Greys and the University of Mississippi serve the examination of Lost Cause mythology. This investigation into the effects of these deletions and selected stories are told through the lens of a reflective, lifelong Mississippian as I wonder: What haunts Mississippi

    Financial Optimization of an Ethylbenzene Production Process

    A crucial step in chemical engineering design is process optimization. This paper describes the steps in the design process with special emphasis placed on process optimization and the preceding step, creation of a base case for the process. The paper also describes what is meant by financial optimization in chemical engineering and explains some of its imperfections. An example of financial optimization of a gas-phase ethylbenzene production process is given. The example provides a summary of one cycle of both topological and parametric single variable discrete optimization to find a local optimum. Net present value was used as the objective function. That example was part of the course requirement for Ch E 451: Plant Design I. The team increased the NPV of the process from -7.7millionto7.7 million to 70.1 million. An example of base case creation for a liquid-phase ethylbenzene production process is also provided. The steps taken to create this base case along with the process flow diagram, stream table, equipment tables, and utility table are presented. SimSci’s Pro/II and Microsoft Excel were used to aid in calculations used in the examples, and plant design heuristics were taken from Analysis, Synthesis and Design of Chemical Processes by Richard Turton

    The Impact of Various Instructional Strategies on Student Engagement with Mathematics

    The purpose of this research is to investigate the variation of student engagement with mathematics depending on the instructional method implemented in a secondary classroom. I looked into the strategies of lecture, group sessions, and direct instruction. In order to compare the student engagement among the methods, I developed a checklist instrument to verify when students were engaged based on seven indicators of engagement – teacher-led questions, student-led questions, showing work on the board, group work, growth between formative assessments, nonverbal engagement, and the use of differentiation. My findings show that the group sessions scored higher on the engagement indicator checklist than both the lecture and direct instruction. As engagement with mathematics plays a pivotal role in success in a mathematics course, I expect my research to enrich my experience as a young teacher and allow me to better serve and educate my future students
