    The Impact of Social Wellness Integration on Fifth Grade Students’ Positive Social Behaviors

    In recent years, schools across the United States have encountered increased pressure to focus solely on academic performance (Dillow & Snyder, 2007). Therefore, time allotted to developing fundamental social skills needed to improve the well-being of children in elementary school has decreased. However, social skills are essential to educating the overall well-being of children (Clinton, West, and Wilson, 2017). Benefits associated with social wellness education include relationship skills, responsible decision making skills, and consideration of well-being of self and others. These are all important to lifelong success (Burrow, Patrick, Kyzer, & Mckelvey 2016). To address these concerns, this study examined the impact of social wellness integration strategies into an academic unit on fifth grade students’ positive social behaviors. All participants were in the same fifth grade classroom at an elementary school in Northwest Mississippi. Twelve observations were completed from October 20, 2017- November 29, 2017 from 1:10 p.m.- 2:40 p.m.. The first six observational periods examined the students positive and negative social behaviors when academic lessons included social wellness integration, and the last six observational periods examined the students positive and negative social behaviors when academic units did not include social wellness integration. Participants positive and negative social behaviors were documented in 10-minute intervals throughout each 90-minute observational period. Results indicated that integrating social wellness standards and strategies into a fifth grade academic unit increased positive social behaviors in the classroom

    Posttraumatic stress symptoms in college students: An examination of the association with emotion regulation, posttraumatic growth, and nonsuicidal self-injury

    The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between posttraumatic stress symptoms, nonsuicidal self-injury, emotion regulation, and posttraumatic growth in college students. One-hundred and fifty-three participants, aged 18-57, completed self-report measures about their experiences with posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), emotion regulation (ER), posttraumatic growth (PTG), and potentially traumatic events (PTEs). In line with hypotheses, results indicated a significant positive correlation between PTSS and both NSSI and PTG. Contrary to predictions, no significant relation was seen between ER and PTG and ER did not moderate the relationship between PTSS and PTG. A post hoc correlational analysis assessing potential trauma categories with relation to NSSI demonstrated that experiencing sexual assault, other unwanted sexual advance, and non-specific “other” events had a significant positive relation with NSSI. Overall, this study contributes to the literature replicating a relation between PTSS, NSSI and PTG. However, with findings from this sample not showing a relationship between ER and PTG or supporting the moderation effect of ER with PTSS and PTG more research is needed to further understanding in this area

    Effects of Housing Management on Vaccination Success Against Eimeria Infection in Chickens

    Coccidiosis is a disease of the gastrointestinal system of commercially raised chickens (Gallus gallus). The infection is caused by multiple parasitic species of the coccidian genus Eimeria. Eimeria proliferate within large poultry houses leading to decreased nutrient absorption, anorexia, and death of the host. Scheduled vaccination with live coccidian oocysts should minimize production losses, but various management factors may contribute to variation in the outcome. I investigated whether by tracking infection cycles in detail it might be possible to improve poultry production. Feces were collected daily from four farms across a two-month period to understand how peaks in oocyst shedding by the hosts affected mortality and bird weight. “2nd peak” shed values (maximum OPG counts following secondary infection) showed significant correlation to early weight loss but not mortality. Additionally, I found no difference in 2nd peak values between males and females; however, differences in density may have caused the effect. Because oocysts per gram (OPG) numbers were homogenous across the house by day 21, “turn out” of birds from brood end to off end did not significantly affect spatial distribution of oocysts. I conclude by describing how coccidian burden varies among chicken producers nationally and internationally and proposing improved methods for oocyst monitoring

    Writing IX: Combining Theatre Arts and Public Policy through the Process of Playwriting

    This thesis explores the process of writing a play and compares sexual misconduct policies at universities in the Southeastern Conference. It exhibits the process through examining writing exercises to develop character and plot, showing expanded understanding of dramatic literature through reading additional plays, outlining the growth of the narrative through table readings, additional feedback, and displaying audience feedback garnered through an optional survey filled out by patrons at the end of their theatre experience. Throughout the narrative of the thesis, I explore how I developed each of Aristotle’s Six Elements of Tragedy: character, plot, idea, language, music, and spectacle. The thesis is the resulting full length play, IX, produced by Ghostlight Repertory Theatre during the Fall semester of 2017, in addition to comparative policy analysis of sexual misconduct policies in the SEC, a crucial component of the research necessary for the development of the play, found in the idea portion of the narrative

    Analysis of EEG Coherence During Active Suppression in Patients with Tourette’s Syndrome

    One of the first studies that investigated quantitative qualities of Tourette syndrome (TS) found that during active suppression of tics TS patients exhibit increased coherence in the alpha frequency (Serrien, Orth, Evans, Lees, & Brown, 2005). In this study, we attempted to validate the previous literature to allow for future research into the role played by increased coherence during active suppression. Our findings,however, showed that there was no significant increase in coherence between active suppression and rest. The findings in this study, along with previous literature, may suggest that TS patients with comorbid obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) affect the alpha power seen in these individuals. This finding shows that coherence may not increase in all TS patients as previously thought, but instead may increase only in individuals with pure TS. These findings show that further research, with a larger sample size, will be needed to determine the effects of comorbid OCD on the change in coherence during active suppression

    The Impact of Mass and Active Shooting Incidents on Residential Real Estate Values

    Gun control as a response to gun violence is currently at the forefront of political debate in the United States. The foundation of this paper revolves around crime and real estate supported by background literature detailing external effects on real estate prices to set up the framework for the research on mass shootings and residential real estate values. The findings in this paper are based on 73 events involving mass shootings in the United States from 1996 to 2015. I find that the effect of mass shooting events plays a significant role in the decline in real estate values following a mass shooting event in areas near the shooting event. Interestingly, this response is otherwise not supported by probability data as death by mass shooting is highly unlikely. The resulting economic changes are meaningful, suggesting between a 15%-20% decline in residential real estate prices within a three-year period around a mass shooting location

    Attitudes towards Plastic Surgery in College Men and Women

    The aim of this study is to determine whether exposure to extreme makeover based reality television programs is related to the attitudes of college-aged individuals towards the acceptability of obtaining plastic surgery procedures and how students view plastic surgery itself. Interviews consisting of closed- and open-ended questions measured the possible influence that exposure to plastic surgery reality television programs, familial experience with plastic surgery and parental attitudes towards plastic surgery, among other factors, have on one’s attitudes towards plastic surgery. The data collected were then entered into Qualtrics and analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) or coded for common themes to determine significance. This study found that college women have more exposure to plastic surgery reality television programs than college men. Qualitative responses suggest that many college individuals consider having cosmetic surgery private or personal and worry about being judged for having such procedures. The small sample size of the study was limiting in determining the significance of the findings, but analysis revealed many possibilities for future research

    Fruit Structure in Arabidopsis Thaliana Organ Boundary Mutants

    The fruit are an integral plant organ that function to nurture and disperse seeds.  Using the model species Arabidopsis thaliana, the genetic mechanisms underlying fruit development have been carefully studied.  The Arabidopsis fruit originates from the female reproductive organ, the gynoecium, which consists of two carpels that develop into the ovary with a style and stigma.  Proper formation of the fruit relies on a functional floral meristem and on the specification of boundary regions that arise between the carpel walls and a medial replum.  Two genes known to affect both the development of organ boundaries in the flower as well as meristem maintenance are SHOOT MERISTEMLESS (STM) and the ARABIDOPSIS THALIANA HOMEOBOX GENE1 (ATH1).  STM and ATH1 encode transcription factors from the homeodomain family.  Combined mutations in the STM and ATH1 genes blur the boundaries formed between the floral organs and the underlying stem. To explore the functions of STM and ATH1 during fruit development, I analyzed the size and structure of stm, ath1, and stm ath1 mutant fruit compared to wildtype. Since STM is essential for maintenance of the stem cell population in shoot meristems, I expected that the size of stm single and stm ath1 double mutant fruit would be reduced.  If the STM and ATH1 genes also have redundant roles in boundary formation in the fruit, I expected to see possible alterations in the structure of double mutant fruit.  To quantify fruit growth defects of the single and double mutants compared to wildtype fruit, I measured the length and width of fruit, and determined the number of carpels present. I found that the majority of stm ath1 flowers did not produce a fruit and that the size of the stm ath1 double mutant fruit present was severely reduced. Furthermore, the double mutant flowers exhibited a diverse array of unusual carpel-derived structures, some of which may be related to defects in boundary formation. My results indicate that the STM and ATH1 genes have redundant functions during fruit development

A description of how the problem is modelled to fit through these approaches and how good they work in each approach, as well as their time and space consumption is been analyzed in this paper
