Search for the Higgs Boson Decaying to Two Muons in Proton-Proton Collisions at ffiffi s p = 13 TeV

    No full text
A search for the Higgs boson decaying to two oppositely charged muons is presented using data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016 at a center-of-mass energy ffiffi s p ¼ 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. Data are found to be compatible with the predicted background. For a Higgs boson with a mass of 125.09 GeV, the 95% confidence level observed (background-only expected) upper limit on the production cross section times the branching fraction to a pair of muons is found to be 3.0 (2.5) times the standard model expectation. In combination with data recorded at center-of-mass energies ffiffi s p ¼ 7 and 8 TeV, the background-only expected upper limit improves to 2.2 times the standard model value with a standard model expected significance of 1.0 standard deviation. The corresponding observed upper limit is 2.9 with an observed significance of 0.9 standard deviation. This corresponds to an observed upper limit on the standard model Higgs boson branching fraction to muons of 6.4 × 10−4 and to an observed signal strength of 1.0 1.0ðstatÞ 0.1ðsystÞ

Determination of seismic site classification of seismic recording stations in the Himalayan region using HVSR method

    No full text
An attempt has been made to classify seismic stations installed along the Himalayan belt and in adjoining regions using recorded strong-motion data and different empirical methods. For all recorded data, HVSRs (horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratios) were computed using pseudo-response spectral acceleration (PSA) values. Five empirical techniques based on HVSRs and PSA were used to classify the stations. The first and second methods are based on the predominant period of the site and relationship between lino and parameters of HVSR. The third and fourth methods compute the correlation between the HVSR curve of a station and standard HVSR curves. Fifth used the PSA and PGA (peak ground acceleration) to identify the site as rock and soil. Conclusively, the site class which had the highest frequency of occurrence amongst the five methods was determined to be the final class for a given station. The final site class recommended is matched with the existing available site classification and also with available field test results

Structural transformations and physical properties of (1-x) Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 - x BaTiO3 solid solutions near a morphotropic phase boundary

    No full text
Piezoelectric and other physical properties are significantly enhanced at (or near) a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in ferroelectrics. MPB materials have attracted significant attention owing to both fundamental physics as well as the possibility of well-regulated energy and information storage devices which are dominated by lead (Pb)-based materials. Here, we report the crystal structure, Raman spectra, dielectric constant and polarization near the MPB of lead free (1 - x) Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 - x BaTiO3 (0.00 <= x <= 0.10) solid-solution, prepared by sol-gel auto combustion technique and sintered by microwave sintering technique. With the addition of BaTiO3 into Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3, it induces a structural phase transition from R3c (a single phase) to R3c + P4mm (a dual phase) close to x = 0.06 and 0.07 and transform to a high symmetry tetragonal phase P4mm at higher compositions (x = 0.08 to 0.10) as evident from our x-ray Rietveld refinement and Raman spectroscopic results. We perform first-principles calculations based on density functional theory that confirm a structural transition from a rhombohedral to a tetragonal phase under increasing x. In the prepared solid solution, an anomalous enhancement of remnant polarization (2P(r)(0)) was observed for x = 0.06 and 0.07, which has been explained based on the existence of the MPB. On the other hand, the value of coercive field E-C(0) was found to be decreased linearly from x = 0.00 to 0.06; it is constant for higher compositions. Further details of the ferroelectric properties on the electric field poled samples have been studied and compared with the as-grown (unpoled) samples

Ag back electrode bonding process for inverted organic solar cells

    No full text
A new style of forming Ag back electrode for organic solar cells (OSCs) using a bonding process was compared with a conventional screen-printed Ag. All the fabrication process steps have been conducted under atmospheric conditions at room temperature without using a glove box. The OSCs with both screen-printed and bonded Ag back electrode exhibited comparable performances with the average power conversion efficiencies of 1.28% and 1.31%, respectively. The series and the shunt resistance values for the OSC with the bonded Ag were slightly better than those with the screen printed Ag. The binder resin at the interface between the PEDOT:PSS and the Ag may increase contact resistance for the screen-printed Ag process, while that between the Ag and the PET film for the bonded Ag process may not increase it. The bonding process for the Ag back electrode has the potential for future electronic device applications. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Synthesis, characterization and tumor inhibitory activity of a novel Pd(ii) complex derived from methanethiol-bridged (2-((1H-benzod]imidazol-2-yl)methylthio)-1H-benzod]imidazol-6-yl)( phenyl)methanone

In this study, we designed a therapeutic active Pd(ii) complex with the new (2-((1H-benzod]imidazol-2-yl)methylthio)-1H-benzod]imidazol-5-yl)( phenyl)methanone ligand in good yield. The structure of the ligand and its Pd(ii) complex was characterized via IR, UV-visible, H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR, mass spectroscopy, TGA and powder XRD techniques. The spectral data of the Pd(ii) complex indicated the bidentate bonding mode for bis-benzimidazole and suggested a tetrahedral geometry for the metal complex. The in vitro antiproliferative effect of the BIPM ligand and Pd(ii) complex were tested against the MCF7, A549, Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) and Daltons lymphoma ascites (DLA) carcinoma cell lines. The metal complex exhibited excellent antiproliferative potency with a significant IC50 value of approximate to 10 m against the EAC cell line compared to the ligand alone with a value of approximate to 17 M. Further, the in vivo antitumor effect study on the Pd(ii) complex against a murine EAC tumor model system showed obvious extended survivability. The tumor inhibitory mechanism of the Pd(ii) complex is due to its antiangiogenic effect and promotion of apoptosis, as verified by DNA condensation and FACS analysis. The potential photo-induced binding mode on double-stranded calf thymus DNA and protein cleavage activity study on pBR322 DNA of the complex confirmed its apoptotic characteristics. The significant hypochromic shift due to the strong - stacking interaction between the metal complex and the base pairs of DNA was clearly shown by the intrinsic DNA binding constant, k(b). The molecular docking study on the Pd(ii) complex interaction with DNA further confirmed its inhibition ability. The experimental results and drug-likeness properties of the Pd(ii) complex suggest its potential applications, which can be developed as a potent anticancer drug in the near future

Instantaneous Balancing of Neutral-Point Voltages for Stacked DC-Link Capacitors of a Multilevel Inverter for Dual-Inverter-Fed Induction Motor Drives

    No full text
This paper proposes a novel method for instantaneous balancing of neutral-point (NP) voltages with stacked multilevel inverters (MLIs) for variable-speed drives. The stacked MLI uses series-connected dc sources and NPs (connecting points of dc sources) to obtain the desired levels. The balancing of NP voltages are obtained by using a low-voltage-capacitor-fed cascaded H-bridge (CHB) per phase of a symmetrical six-phase induction machine (IM), which ensures zero current drawn from NPs (at any given instant). Since no current is drawn from NPs, the single dc-link operation with stacked capacitors is also possible. The scheme is suitable for applications, where low-voltage dc sources and batteries are stacked to form a dc link. A variable-speed operation is done using a seven-level inverter scheme for a symmetrical six-phase IM, which is formed by three dc-link stacked capacitors cascaded with two low-voltage-capacitor-fed CHBs per phase. Furthermore, the method is extended for an open-end IM to obtain a seven-level common-mode eliminated space vector structure using a single dc link. The generalization of this method for any stacked n-level inverter without NP voltage deviation is also presented in this paper. The experimental results and analysis are included to validate the proposed method

Mechanism of Solvent Control of Protein Dynamics

    No full text
We find that the coupled interactions between protein and water polarization fluctuations play a dominant role in driving the configuration space random walk of solvated proteins. We perform atomistic molecular dynamics simulations on five proteins. Owing to a very low dielectric constant of protein, its dipolar groups experience forces from water along with local forces due to protein atoms. Energy fluctuations reveal a pronounced anticorrelation between protein and water contributions. The protein energy spectrum shows bimodal 1/f noise, which can be attributed to the influence of water on the dynamics of protein

Multiband superconductivity in Mo8Ga41 driven by a site-selective mechanism

    No full text
The family of the endohedral gallide cluster compounds recently emerged as a new family of superconductors which is expected to host systems displaying unconventional physics. Mo8Ga41 is an important member of this family which shows relatively large T-c similar to 10 K and has shown indications of strong electron-phonon coupling and multiband superconductivity. Here, through direct measurement of superconducting energy gap by scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), we demonstrate the existence of two distinct superconducting gaps of magnitude 0.85 and 1.6 meV, respectively, in Mo8Ga41. Both gaps are seen to be conventional in nature as they evolve systematically with temperature as per the predictions of BCS theory. Our band structure calculations reveal that only two specific Mo sites in a unit cell contribute to superconductivity where only d(xz)/d(yz) and d(x2)(-y2) orbitals have strong contributions. Our analysis indicates that the site-elective contribution governs the two-gap nature of superconductivity in Mo8Ga41
