Measurement and interpretation of differential cross sections for Higgs boson production at root s=13 TeV

    No full text
Differential Higgs boson (H) production cross sections are sensitive probes for physics beyond the standard model. New physics may contribute in the gluon-gluon fusion loop, the dominant Higgs boson production mechanism at the LHC, and manifest itself through deviations from the distributions predicted by the standard model. Combined spectra for the H -> gamma gamma, H -> ZZ, and H -> b (b) over bar decay channels and the inclusive Higgs boson production cross section are presented, based on proton-proton collision data recorded with the CMS detector at root s = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The transverse momentum spectrum is used to place limits on the Higgs boson couplings to the top, bottom, and charm quarks, as well as its direct coupling to the gluon field. No significant deviations from the standard model are observed in any differential distribution. The measured total cross section is 61.1 +/- 6.0 (stat) +/- 3.7 (syst) pb, and the precision of the measurement of the differential cross section of the Higgs boson transverse momentum is improved by about 15% with respect to the H -> gamma gamma channel alone. Genetic analysis of ATP7B in 102 south Indian families with Wilson disease

    No full text
Wilson disease (WD) is an autosomal recessive disorder, characterized by excessive deposition of copper in various parts of the body, mainly in the liver and brain. It is caused by mutations in ATP7B. We report here the genetic analysis of 102 WD families from a south Indian population. Thirty-six different ATP7B mutations, including 13 novel ones p.Ala58fs*19, p.Lys74fs*9, p.GIn281*, p.Pro350fs*12, p.Ser481*, p.Leu735Arg, p.Va1752Gly, p.Asn812fs*2, p.Va1845Ala, p.His889Pro, p.11e1184fs*1, p.Va11307Glu and p.Ala1339Pro], were identified in 76/102 families. Interestingly, the mutation analysis of affected individuals in two families identified two different homozygous mutations in each family, and thus each affected individual from these families harbored two mutations in each ATP7B allele. Of 36 mutations, 28 were missense, thus making them the most prevalent mutations identified in the present study. Nonsense, insertion and deletion represented 3/36, 2/36 and 3/36 mutations, respectively. The haplotype analysis suggested founder effects for all the 14 recurrent mutations. Our study thus expands the mutational landscape of ATP7B with a total number of 758 mutations. The mutations identified during the present study will facilitate carrier and pre-symptomatic detection, and prenatal genetic diagnosis in affected families

A fully automated spinal cord segmentation

    No full text
Segmentation of the spinal cord region is an imperative step in the automated analysis of neurological ailments such as multiple sclerosis. Multiple studies demonstrated the connection between progression of neurological diseases and measurements identifying with spinal cord atrophy and changes to its structure. Segmentation of spinal cord region manually or semi-automatically, can be conflicting and tedious for large datasets. We present a novel automated method, that segments the spinal cord region, utilizing circular active discs and region growth algorithm. The proposed method is validated on the Visible Human Project dataset. The results with regards to sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, Jaccard index, and Dice coefficient were 97.23, 100, 99.76, 96.83, and 98.65, respectively. The results were observed to be highly precise in comparison to expert outlines. © 2018 IEEE

Orthogonally clickable hyperbranched polymers: Effect of reactant size and polarity on core-functionalization of peripherally jacketed HBPs

    No full text
We describe a strategy for the preparation of an "orthogonally clickable" HB polyester (HBP) via a melt trans-esterification process, starting from a suitably designed AB 2 monomer. The resulting HBP carries an allyl group on each repeat unit within the core-region and numerous propargyl groups on the molecular periphery; selective reaction of the periphery, to yield jacketed HBPs, permitted the examination of various factors that govern the access to internal reactive (allyl) sites. First, either hydrophobic docosyl (C22) or hydrophilic PEG350 segments were quantitatively clicked onto the periphery via the azide-yne reaction; subsequently, access of the internal allyl groups to thiol-ene reaction was examined using organic thiols of varying size and polarity. It was seen that the extent of reaction depends not only on the size of the thiol reactant but also on its relative polarity; for instance, a polar thiol is less effective in accessing the internal allyl groups of a HBP bearing docosyl segments on the periphery when compared to a non-polar thiol of roughly the same size. Likewise, when PEG segments are installed at the periphery, access to more polar reactants is favoured when compared to non-polar analogues of a similar size. These studies provide some interesting insights that could be useful in designing HBP supported catalysts for substrate-selective transformations

Misperceived Risks of Zika-related Microcephaly in India

    No full text
After the discovery that Zika virus (ZIKV) could cause microcephaly and other birth defects, we have scrambled to understand how. Now, spreading along with the virus is misinformation that a ZIKV mutation is responsible for microcephaly. Putting too much onus on a single mutation could enhance a crisis in India

High Power Density Low-Lead-Piezoceramic-Polymer Composite Energy Harvester

Polymer-piezoceramic composites show mutual properties of piezoceramics and polymers that can be efficiently utilized in energy harvesting applications. Here we fabricated 0-3 composite films using high-performance low-lead piezoceramic (x)Bi(Ni1/2Zr1/2)0(3)-(1-x)PbTiOa (BNz-PT) as ceramic filler and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as polymer matrix. Unlike the conventional morphotropic phase boundary piezoelectrics such as the (1-x)PbTiO3-(x)PbZrO3, the large piezoelectric response of the BNZ-PT can be obtained by poling-induced cubic-like-totetragonal phase transformation. This leads to high piezoelectric coefficient of the PVDF-BNZ-PT composite films as well as highenergy harvesting performance. Composite films with different volume fractions of ceramic showed surface power density of 1.3-3.5 mu W/cm(2) , and volume power density of 72.2-175 mu W/cm(3) using simple bending and unbending movements. Energy harvester in the form of cantilever fixed at both ends showed surface power density of 56.97-163.63 mu W/cm(2) and volume power density of 3165-8165 mu W/cm(3) in response to impact pressure pulses. The generated power from the composite films is comparable to composite energy generators reported to date. The volume power density, however, is highest to the best of our knowledge among the reported 0-3 polymer-piezoceramic composite energy harvesters

Search for dark matter produced in association with a single top quark or a top quark pair in proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV

    No full text
A search for dark matter produced in association with top quarks in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is presented. The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb −1 recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. Whereas previous searches for neutral scalar or pseudoscalar mediators considered dark matter production in association with a top quark pair only, this analysis also includes production modes with a single top quark. The results are derived from the combination of multiple selection categories that are defined to target either the single top quark or the top quark pair signature. No significant deviations with respect to the standard model predictions are observed. The results are interpreted in the context of a simplified model in which a scalar or pseudoscalar mediator particle couples to a top quark and subsequently decays into dark matter particles. Scalar and pseudoscalar mediator particles with masses below 290 and 300 GeV, respectively, are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming a dark matter particle mass of 1 GeV and mediator couplings to fermions and dark matter particles equal to unity.[Figure not available: see fulltext.]. © 2019, The Author(s)

Search for associated production of a Higgs boson and a single top quark in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    No full text
A search is presented for the production of a Higgs boson in association with a single top quark, based on data collected in 2016 by the CMS experiment at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The production cross section for this process is highly sensitive to the absolute values of the top quark Yukawa coupling, y(t); the Higgs boson coupling to vector bosons, g(HVV); and, uniquely, their relative sign. Analyses using multilepton signatures, targeting H -> WW, H -> tau tau, and H -> ZZ decay modes, and signatures with a single lepton and a b (b) over bar pair, targeting the H -> b (b) over bar decay, are combined with a reinterpretation of a measurement in the H -> gamma gamma channel to constrain y(t). For a standard model-like value of g(HVV), the data favor positive values of y(t) and exclude values of y(t) below about -0.9y(t)(SM)

Enhanced adsorption of Congo red on microwave synthesized layered Zn-Al double hydroxides and its adsorption behaviour using mixture of dyes from aqueous solution

    No full text
The adsorption of Congo red (CR) dye on to the ZnAl-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) nanoadsorbents synthesized using conventional hydrothermal (HT) and microwave-assisted hydrothermal (MW) methods were investigated. Thorough characterization of LDHs were done by using X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, BET surface area, Transmission electron microscopy and CHNS elemental analysis methods. Among the microwave synthesized LDHs, ZnAl-NO3 has shown superior adsorption capacity for Congo red (CR) in aqueous solution than its counter ZnAl-CO3 LDH which was attributed to enhanced porosity and acidic property of the ZnAl-NO3 LDH. Adsorption capacity of the LDH adsorbents has been tested using various concentrations of CR ranging from 100 to 1200 ppm in water and the monolayer adsorption capacity of ZnAl-NO3 was observed as 571.43 mg g(-1). It is important to note that adsorption studies were performed at ambient temperature and without maintaining pH of the solution. We have also studied the adsorption performance of the ZnAl-NO3-LDH for mixture of various anionic and cationic dyes in water using 25-100 ppm concentration of each dye in water. It has showed good adsorption affinity for anionic dyes over cationic dyes. In addition, the adsorption rates of CR onto ZnAI-NO3-MW are rather fast and CR adsorption equilibrium data obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm model and kinetics data fitted to pseudo second-order kinetic model with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.998 to 0.999
