On Random Distortion Testing Based Sequential Non-Parametric Hypothesis Testing

    No full text
In this work, we propose a new method for sequential binary hypothesis testing. The approach is non-parametric in the sense that it does not assume any knowledge of signal distributions under each hypothesis. The proposed framework is based on Random distortion testing (RDT) which addresses the problem of testing whether or not a random signal, deviates by more than a specified tolerance, τ, from a fixed value, ξ-0. We first state the problem setup and then discuss earlier approaches to solve the problem. We then propose a new sequential algorithm, T-SeqRDT, which is shown to control the probabilities of error while reducing the number of samples required to make a decision compared to the fixed-sample-size version of RDT. Finally, via simulations we compare T-SeqRDT to other algorithms and show its robustness compared to standard likelihood ratio based approaches. © 2018 IEEE

A complete characterization of smoothness in the space of bounded linear operators

    No full text
We completely characterize smoothness of bounded linear operators between infinite dimensional real normed linear spaces, probably for the very first time, by applying the concepts of Birkhoff-James orthogonality and semi-inner-products in normed linear spaces. In this context, the key aspect of our study is to consider norming sequences for a bounded linear operator, instead of norm attaining elements. We also obtain a complete characterization of smoothness of bounded linear operators between real normed linear spaces, when the corresponding norm attainment set non-empty. This illustrates the importance of the norm attainment set in the study of smoothness of bounded linear operators. Finally, we prove that Gâteaux differentiability and Fréchet differentiability are equivalent for compact operators in the space of bounded linear operators between a reflexive Kadets-Klee Banach space and a Fréchet differentiable normed linear space, endowed with the usual operator norm. © 2019, © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

Large Universe Subset Predicate Encryption Based on Static Assumption (Without Random Oracle)

    No full text
In a recent work, Katz et al. (CANS17) generalized the notion of Broadcast Encryption to define Subset Predicate Encryption (SPE) that emulates subset containment predicate in the encrypted domain. They proposed two selective secure constructions of SPE in the small universe settings. Their first construction is based on q-type assumption while the second one is based on DBDH. Both achieve constant size secret key while the ciphertext size depends on the size of the privileged set. They also showed some black-box transformation of SPE to well-known primitives like WIBE and ABE to establish the richness of the SPE structure. This work investigates the question of large universe realization of SPE scheme based on static assumption without random oracle. We propose two constructions both of which achieve constant size secret key. First construction (Formula Presented), instantiated in composite order bilinear groups, achieves constant size ciphertext and is proven secure in a restricted version of selective security model under the subgroup decision assumption (SDP). Our main construction (Formula Presented) is adaptive secure in the prime order bilinear group under the symmetric external Diffie-Hellman assumption (SXDH). Thus (Formula Presented) is the first large universe instantiation of SPE to achieve adaptive security without random oracle. Both our constructions have efficient decryption function suggesting their practical applicability. Thus the primitives like WIBE and ABE resulting through black-box transformation of our constructions become more practical. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG

Self-Powered, Broad Band, and Ultrafast InGaN-Based Photodetector

    No full text
A self-powered, broad band and ultrafast photodetector based on n + -InGaN/AlN/n-Si(111) heterostructure is demonstrated. Si-doped (n + type) InGaN epilayer was grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on a 100 nm thick AlN template on an n-type Si(111) substrate. The n + -InGaN/AlN/n-Si(111) devices exhibit excellent self-powered photoresponse under UV-visible (300-800 nm) light illumination. The maximum response of this self-powered photodetector is observed at 580 nm for low-intensity irradiance (0.1 mW/cm 2 ), owing to the deep donor states present near the InGaN/AlN interface. It shows a responsivity of 9.64 A/W with rise and fall times of 19.9 and 21.4 μs, respectively. A relation between the open circuit voltage and the responsivity has been realized. © 2019 American Chemical Society

Early splicing functions of fission yeast Prp16 and its unexpected requirement for gene Silencing is governed by intronic features

    No full text
Prp16 is a DEAH box pre-mRNA splicing factor that triggers a key spliceosome conformational switch to facilitate second step splicing in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. However, Prp16 functions are largely unexplored in Schizosaccharomyces pombe, an attractive model with exon-intron architecture more relevant to several other eukaryotes. Here, we generated mis-sense alleles in SpPrp16 whose consequences on genome-wide splicing uncover its nearly global splicing role with only a small subset of unaffected introns. Prp16 dependent and independent intron categories displayed a striking difference in the strength of intronic 5ʹ splice site (5SS)-U6 snRNA and branch site (BS)-U2 snRNA interactions. Selective weakening of these interactions could convert a Prp16 dependent intron into an independent one. These results point to the role of SpPrp16 in destabilizing 5SS-U6snRNA and BS-U2snRNA interactions which plausibly trigger structural alterations in the spliceosome to facilitate first step catalysis. Our data suggest that SpPrp16 interactions with early acting factors, its enzymatic activities and association with intronic elements collectively account for efficient and accurate first step catalysis. In addition to splicing derangements in the spprp16F528S mutant, we show that SpPrp16 influences cell cycle progression and centromeric heterochromatinization. We propose that strong 5SS-U6 snRNA and BS-U2 snRNA complementarity of intron-like elements in non-coding RNAs which lead to complete splicing arrest and impaired Seb1 functions at the pericentromeric loci may cumulatively account for the heterochromatin defects in spprp16F528S cells. These findings suggest that the diverse Prp16 functions within a genome are likely governed by its intronic features that influence splice sitesnRNA interaction strength. © 2019, © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

Observation of prompt J/ψ meson elliptic flow in high-multiplicity pPb collisions at √s NN =8.16 TeV

    No full text
A measurement of the elliptic flow (v 2 ) of prompt J/ψ mesons in high-multiplicity pPb collisions is reported using data collected by the CMS experiment at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy s NN =8.16TeV. Prompt J/ψ mesons decaying into two muons are reconstructed in the rapidity region in the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass frame (y cm ), corresponding to either −2.86<y cm <−1.86 or 0.94<y cm <1.94. The average v 2 result from the two rapidity ranges is reported over the transverse momentum (p T ) range from 0.2 to 10 GeV. Positive v 2 values are observed for the prompt J/ψ meson, as extracted from long-range two-particle correlations with charged hadrons, for 2<p T <8 GeV. The prompt J/ψ results are compared with previous CMS measurements of elliptic flow for open charm mesons (D 0 ) and strange hadrons. From these measurements, constraints can be obtained on the collective dynamics of charm quarks produced in high-multiplicity events arising from small systems. © 2019 The Author(s

    A Bidirectional Soft-Switched DAB-Based Single-Stage Three-Phase AC-DC Converter for V2G Application

    No full text
In vehicle-to-grid applications, the battery charger of the electric vehicle (EV) needs to have a bidirectional power flow capability. Galvanic isolation is necessary for safety. An ac-dc bidirectional power converter with high-frequency isolation results in high power density, a key requirement for an on-board charger of an EV. Dual-active-bridge (DAB) converters are preferred in medium power and high voltage isolated dc-dc converters clue to high power density and better efficiency. This paper presents a DAB-based three-phase ac-dc isolated converter with a novel modulation strategy that results in: 1) single stage power conversion with no electrolytic capacitor, improving the reliability and power density; 2) open-loop power factor correction; 3) soft-switching of all semiconductor devices; and 4) a simple linear relationship between the control variable and the transferred active power. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the proposed operation, along with simulation results and experimental verification

A Variational Approach to Registration with Local Exponential Coordinates

    No full text
We identify a novel parameterization for the group of finite rotations (SO3), consisting of an atlas of exponential maps defined over local tangent planes, for the purpose of computing isometric transformations in registration problems that arise in machine vision applications. Together with a simple representation for translations, the resulting system of coordinates for rigid body motions is proper, free from singularities, is unrestricted in the magnitude of motions that can be represented and poses no difficulties in computer implementations despite their multi-chart nature. Crucially, such a parameterization helps to admit varied types of data sets, to adopt data-dependent error functionals for registration, seamlessly bridges correspondence and pose calculations, and inspires systematic variational procedures for computing optimal solutions. As a representative problem, we consider that of registering point clouds onto implicit surfaces without introducing any discretization of the latter. We derive coordinate-free stationarity conditions, compute consistent linearizations, provide algorithms to compute optimal solutions and examine their performance with detailed examples. The algorithm generalizes naturally to registering curves and surfaces onto implicit manifolds, is directly adaptable to handle the familiar problem of pairwise registration of point clouds and allows for incorporating scale factors during registration

Investigation of Ta2O5 as an Alternative High-k Dielectric for InAlN/GaN MOS-HEMT on Si

    No full text
We report on the demonstration and investigation of Ta2O5 as high-k dielectric for InAlN/GaN-MOS high-electron mobility transistor (HEMT)-on-Si. Ta2O5 of thickness 24 nm and dielectric constant similar to 30 was sputter deposited on InAlN/GaN HEMT and was investigated for different post deposition anneal (PDA) conditions. The gate leakage was 16 nA/mm at -15 V which was similar to five orders of magnitude lower compared to reference HEMT. The 2-D electron gas (2-DEG) density was found to vary with annealing temperature suggesting the presence of net charge at the Ta2O5/InAlN interface. Dispersion in the capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics was used to estimate the frequency-dependent interface charge, while energy band diagrams under flat band conditions were investigated to estimate fixed charge. The optimum anneal condition was found to be 500 degrees C which has resulted into a flat band voltage spread (Delta V-FB) of 0.4 V and interface fix charge (Q(f)) of 3.98 x 10(13) cm(-2). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra of as-deposited and annealed Ta2O5 film were analyzed for Ta and O compositions in the film. The sample annealed at 500 degrees C has shown Ta:O ratio of 0.41. X-ray diffraction analysis was done to check the crystallization of amorphous Ta2O5 film at higher annealing temperatures

BubR1 depletion delays apoptosis in the microtubule-depolymerized cells

    No full text
We investigated the role of a spindle assembly checkpoint protein, BubR1, in determining the mechanism of cell killing of an anti-microtubule agent CXI-benzo-84. CXI-benzo-84 dampened microtubule dynamics in live MCF-7 cells. The compound arrested MCF-7 cells in mitosis and induced apoptosis in these cells. Though CXI-benzo-84 efficiently depolymerized microtubules in the BubRl-depleted MCF-7 cells, it did not arrest the BubRl-depleted cells at mitosis. Interestingly, apoptosis occurred in the BubRl-depleted MCF-7 cells in the absence of a mitotic block suggesting that the mitotic block is not a prerequisite for the induction of apoptosis by anti-microtubule agents. In the presence of CXI-Benzo-84, the level of apoptosis was initially found to be lesser in the BubR1-depleted MCF-7 cells than the control cells; however, the BubRl-depleted cells displayed a similar level of apoptosis as the control cells at 72 h of drug treatment. The depletion of BubR1 enhanced DNA damage in MCF-7 cells upon microtubule depolymerization. In addition, CXI-benzo-84 in combination with cisplatin induced more cell death in BubRl-depleted cells than the BubR1-expressing MCF-7 cells. The results indicated a possibility that the BubRl-compromised cancer patients can be treated with combination therapy
