I could not be more grateful for my experience at Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).The Arlin M. Adams Center provided me with the opportunity to intern with this national nonprofit organization at the beginning of my junior year in September 2013. From my first day on the job, I knew that this internship would change my life.
Being involved in helping children who have become involved with the justice system through parental neglect or abuse has been the greatest experience I have had throughout my entire college career.
This internship taught me so much about the courts, the legal system and how these means can be used to make a difference in the lives of at-risk young people. My involvement in CASA has not only provided me with knowledge that will help me excel in the workforce after college, but it has also helped me understand various points of view that will aid in my ongoing studies in the fields of law and sociology.

A cost-effective fluorescence detection system for pulsed laser analysis
A cost-effective fluorescence detection system has been developed using a National Instruments PCI-6251 data acquisition (DAQ) board that is driven by LabVIEW Signal Express. The signal is collected using a collimator and transported to the DAQ board using a fiber-coupled detector. The same detection system has been incorporated into an inverted microscope fitted with internal dichroic mirrors to provide a cost-effective alternative to commercial fluorescence microscopes. The detection system has been used to measure fluorescence intensity and generate a laser power curve that can be used for pulsed lasers. Different data analysis approaches have been compared and standard deviation and signal-to-noise ratios have been determined
A Room of Rain
The narratives throughout Gary Fincke’s sixth collection of short stories contain newsworthy events that are chronicled secondhand: the shooting of a policeman, the murder of a house flipper, the firing of a teacher for punching a violent student, the accidental drowning of a gay man in a flood, and a fire somewhat accidently set by a juvenile smoker in a school. Despite these surprising events, the narrator of each story is an ordinary person caught up in the action but preoccupied by other things, whether zombie movies, collecting unusual words, the oddity of other people’s sexual habits, or what to do in retirement. These shocking incidents become both central and peripheral to the narrative, as Fincke portrays the fluctuating emotions and self-protective reflections of fathers, sons, and husbands, creating a world where individuals rarely understand each other, yet still arrive at moments of compassion, tolerance, perseverance, and familial love.https://scholarlycommons.susqu.edu/facultybooks/1012/thumbnail.jp
Teaching Students with Developmental Disabilities Daily Living Skills Using Point-of-View Modeling Plus Video Prompting with Error Correction
A primary goal of instruction for students with developmental disabilities is to enhance their future quality of life by promoting skill acquisition which will enable them to live, function, and participate in the community. One instructional method that can help students with developmental disabilities improve independence in performing daily living skills is video prompting. This study investigated the effectiveness of a video prompting plus error correction procedure on skill acquisition when teaching daily living skills to four adolescents with mild and moderate developmental disabilities. A multiple baseline across participants design demonstrated that all four participants rapidly acquired dish washing skills upon introduction of the intervention. Future research should further explore the efficacy of error correction procedures used with video prompting and the impact that these procedures have on student learning and skill retention
100 kHz bandwidth ultrasonic recording system
We have developed a complete 100 kHz ultrasonic recording system. The primary components of the system are a SensComp Series 600 Instrument Grade Electrostatic Transducer, custom printed circuit board (PCB), wide-bandwidth instrumentation amplifier, linear-phase filter, fully differential 16-bit analog to digital converter (ADC) sampling at 840 kHz, 168 MHz STM32F4 32-bit microcontroller, and a direct 100 Mbps Ethernet connection. A host computer running a custom application written in C++ provides a unified computer interface that allows the user to control all aspects of the system and provides a real time spectrogram. The system is designed for general use but has been initially used to study the ultrasonic vocalizations of rodents. We demonstrate the system by recording a well-established call made by Long-Evans rats termed 50-kHz vocalizations. The system was also designed with possible physical measurements in mind, e.g., distance, temperature, humidity, and gas mixture ratios
The Inconvenience of the Wings
The stories in The Inconvenience of the Wings inhabit a imaginative landscape so expansive in conception that it permeates the border between the natural and the supernatural. In “Outlaw,” a group of feckless friends attempts to rob a gas station and causes an explosion worthy of a Quentin Tarantino scene, yet the description juxtaposes violence with a poetic evocation of nature. In The Bellwether , some friends, trapped in a vacation cabin by a blizzard, some friends solve the problem of finding one of their company dead by placing her body in the freezing barn, necessitating the digging of a passage which is described in strangely beautiful language: “We shoveled. Wind harried the snow in horizontal gusts. We channeled between the house and the barn: the snow even with my navel, the sky a vertiginous swirl, the air scented of cold.” This extraordinarily powerful debut collection shows us that what seems beyond our ken is as much a part of the human experience as the tactile ground on which we tread.https://scholarlycommons.susqu.edu/facultybooks/1008/thumbnail.jp
