Interaction of a water-soluble porphyrin with various DNA sequence: A spectroscopic study
No full textThe ability of three different porphyrins to interact with four different quadruplex DNA sequences, 15mer, 22mer, mixed G1, and mixed G2, via intercalation and π-π stacking was determined using UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. A water-soluble porphyrin was synthesized by functionalization of tetrakis-(perfluorophenyl) porphyrin (TFPP) with copper (II) chloride, followed by PEGylation. Its interaction with various DNA sequences (duplex, quadruplex and mixed) in the presence of cations was studied via systematic spectroscopic titrations. A red shift in the Soret band of the UV-Vis spectra of meso-5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(N-methyl-4-pyridyl) porphine (TMPyP4) as well as peak sharpening and intensity decrease in fluorescence spectra revealed strong interactions with all four annealed DNA sequences. No apparent preference between sequences with TMPyP4 could be determined based on the spectra. Binding was diminished in the Cu2+ derivative of TMPyP4, with no evidence of binding to 15mer. The modified Cu2+ derivative of TFPP failed to interact with any of the four sequences. It is unclear whether this failure is a consequence of structural modifications, the presence of Cu2+, or the structure of TFPP itself

Thalidomide Treated Sperm and the Effects on Embryonic Development of Lytechinus pictus and Strongylocentrotus purpuratus
No full textThalidomide causes birth defects especially when taken during early pregnancy. Upon ingestion by males, thalidomide can be detected in semen. However, little research exists studying the reproductive effects of male exposure to thalidomide. Using sea urchins as a model organism, thalidomide treated sea urchin sperm and controls were used to fertilize untreated eggs. Observations of embryos at 24, 48 and 72-hour time points correlated with key developmental stages. Preliminary data indicates that embryos from eggs fertilized by treated sperm display up to 30% more abnormal characteristics than control embryos at the 24 and 48-hour time points. We suspect thalidomide could be causing an epigenetic effect. Current experiments examining changes in DNA patterns of treated and untreated sperm, immunohistochemistry targeting primary mesenchyme cells, and in situ hybridization to explore mRNA levels are ongoing
Religious Pluralism at Susquehanna University: Identifying and Overcoming Barriers
No full textSusquehanna University prides itself on its pluralistic community, in an increasingly diverse society where institutions strive to accommodate their ever changing populations. Over the course of this academic year, our administration has been open to working toward moving this campus forward in the recognition of religious minorities on campus. This research is meant to gauge how faculty/staff members feel about religion on campus, where Susquehanna could improve, and what employees would like to see. The data will be used to compare Susquehanna practices to that of similar liberal arts universities to see what policies are realistic for a school of our characteristics. The results of this research will be used to help faculty/staff better accommodate students through new policies that could be implemented or suggestions that could be made to the overall campus community
The Effects of Vernacular Usage on the Cultural Capital of a Minority
No full textSocial interaction is viewed as one of the most important factors of having a successful college career. It is therefore imperative to explore the lives of students that attend universities in locations that are nothing like where they hail from. Drawing on literature that explains the dimensions and necessity of cultural capital in general, and that of black people, this study examines how African American Vernacular English (AAVE) is used on college campuses as well as how its usage affects a black student’s cultural capital. A focus group of six African American students from Susquehanna University was conducted. It was found that the cultural capital of these students faced both benefits and drawbacks with AAVE usage. With special regard to habitus, argot, and cultural racism, the results indicate that support work needs to be done by the institution to increase the comfort of minority students
Defense Attorneys and the Impact of Gender and Age on Perceived Competency
No full textDo gender and age stereotypes influence the way we perceive attorneys? After reading a passage featuring a defense attorney questioning a witness, participants (N=89) rated the attorney’s effectiveness and competence. Attorney gender and age, manipulated via an attached photograph, did not affect those ratings. However, attorney gender and age interacted for ratings of perceived guilt of the defendant, an indirect measure of effectiveness, with greater age benefitting the female but not the male attorney.In the workplace, men often have been seen as more competent than women, especially in professions that have historically been male dominated (e.g., doctors, lawyers). Women entering these professions may be perceived to be less able to do the job, even though they have obtained the necessary training, and this may lead to workplace discrimination (Leskinen et al., 2015)
Habitat Requirements of Brook and Brown Trout in Pennsylvania Streams
No full textEnvironmental factors play a large role in determining what species are capable of living and reproducing successfully in an ecosystem. For aquatic ecosystems - stream temperature, altitude, slope, land use, mine drainage and oil well drainage are some of the most restrictive factors that aquatic organisms need to adjust to. Two local trout species, brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalus) and brown trout (Salmo trutta), were looked at in this study to determine and compare thresholds for each abiotic factor stated above. Using data gathered from local, state, and international agencies, averages for each environmental factor were compared between streams that contained neither trout species, only brook trout, only brown trout, and both trout species. Brook trout were significantly more common in cooler, higher, and less human-influenced streams, while brown trout showed the opposite. There was not enough data to find significant differences due to coal mine nor oil well impacted streams
