Eco-friendly and Fair: Fast Fashion and Consumer Behaviour
The make-take-waste paradigm of fast fashion explains much of the producer and consumer behavior patterns towards fast fashion. The evolution from a two-season fashion calendar to fast fashion, characterized by rapid product cycles from retailers and impulse buying by consumers, presents new challenges to the environment, workplace and labour practices. This book provides a comprehensive overview of new insights into consumer behaviour mechanisms in order to shift practices toward sustainable fashion and to minimize the negative impacts of fast fashion on the environment and society. Concepts and techniques are presented that could overcome the formidable economic drivers of fast fashion and lead toward a future of sustainable fashion. While the need for change in the fashion industry post-Rana Plaza could not be more obvious, alternative and more sustainable consumption models have been under-investigated. The paucity of such research extends to highly consumptive consumer behaviours regarding fast fashion (i.e. impulse buying and throwaways) and the related impediments these behaviours pose for sustainable fashion. Written by leading researchers in the field of sustainable fashion and supported by the Textile Institute, this book evaluates fashion trends, what factors have led to new trends and how the factors supporting fast fashion differ from those of the past. It explores the economic drivers of fast fashion and what social, environmental and political factors should be maintained, and business approaches adopted, in order for fast fashion to be a sustainable model. Consultancy Project - Friends of Jaclyn Foundation
Friends of Jaclyn is a relatively young organization that has been able to find a niche that has not been explored by other organizations: to bring immediately and sustainable happiness to children battling various cancer through collegiate athletics teams. We are bridging the gap between the foundation and social workers by providing information about the process of a child being paired with a team, and working to increase their search engine optimization ranking to generate more foot traffic on their website. Additionally, our team has explored different partnership and sponsorship opportunities to increase funding for the foundation such as Subaru and Build-A-Bear. Our deliverables from our consultancy project will include a folder containing all of the information that social workers need for referrals, two different sponsorship applications, a membership with the Association of Pediatric Oncology Social Workers Convention, and an SEO optimization report
The Effect of Transition Metal Counter Ions on the Structure of Janus Head Ligands in Nickel-and Copper-Based Inorganic Compounds
Reactions between copper(II) and bis-(2-pyridyl)phenylphosphine (PhPPy2) were examined to determine the effect of stoichiometry on the molecular structures of the products. PhPPy2 is classified as a Janus head ligand and features dual binding sites oriented in opposite directions which should result in structural diversity amongst the synthesized molecules. Varying the stoichiometry from 1:1 (PhPPy2:copper) to 1:2 and 2:1 resulted in the isolation of different colored products suggesting different copper coordination environment in each case. Changing the counter ion from chloride to nitrate also had an effect indicated by the green color of the chloride complexes and the blue color of the nitrate analogs. IR experiments show ligand-based vibrations, specifically C=C, C=N, and P-C bond stretches, consistent with the presence of the PhPPy2 ligand in all products. Due to the paramagnetic nature of Cu(II), crystallization trials were performed in order to identify the solid-state structures through X-ray crystallography; however, decomposition of the products during crystallization has hampered these studies

And while with time motivations for leaving your home country have evolved, international migration is as pertinent today as it ever was. This study is an attempt to evaluate migration patterns within fifty-four African countries by conducting a quantitative analysis of how democracy, economy, and conflict play into the role of migration within and towards Africa in post-Cold-War period
The Effect of Epigallocatechin (ECGC) on Adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 Cells
As the prevalence of obesity continues to increase in the United States, it is important to understand the mechanisms responsible for fat accumulation and to find treatments that inhibit the process. Research shows chronic caloric overconsumption leads to the development of fat cells, or adipogenesis. Antioxidants, such as Epigallocatechin (EGCG), have a role in prevention of disease, and also inhibit adipogenesis. We used the 3T3-L1 cell line as our model system because they easily undergo adipogenesis and accumulate lipid rapidly. We determined the effect of 50 uM, 100 uM, or 200 uM of EGCG on 3T3-L1 adipogenesis, and measured lipid accumulation using Oil Red-O staining. We expect EGCG to inhibit adipogenesis in a concentration-dependent manner based inhibition rates found with Vitamin C, which combats fat accumulation, and previous studies using EGCG. These findings may be used in the development of antioxidant-induced obesity treatments
Policy Brief: The Death Penalty
Between the dates of April 17th and April 27th 2017 the State of Arkansas carried out the executions of eight men on death row. Bruce Ward, Marcel Williams, Jason McGehee, Kenneth Williams, Stacey Johnson, Ledell Lee, Don Davis, and Jack Jones. Due to the decline in support for the death penalty it has become increasingly more difficult to acquire the drugs used for lethal injections from drug producers Arkansas itself hadn’t conducted an execution in twelve years prior to the April 2017 executions. The reasoning for the executions was because the supply of lethal injections expirations was soon to be overdue, and so the state of Arkansas moved to use the supply before the lethal injections had expired. The sudden and promptly conducted executions have rekindled debated over the rationality of the death penalty in the modern day. In the heart of this debate lies on of the oldest and most perplexing question mankind has yet to answer: what is justice, and who is responsible for providing it
The Developmental Benefits of Strategic Decolonization in the Caribbean
Due to its uniquely heterogeneous developmental environment, complex political and economic history, and continued inequality in resource balancing and economic development, the Caribbean is a fascinating subject for studies on decolonization. Though many authors have argued over the value of close relationships between Caribbean states and their Former Colonial Powers (FCPs), no comprehensive study has been undertaken to compare the effects of involuntary and \u27strategic\u27 decolonization in the Caribbean. In a wide variety of developmental literature, authors identify a fundamental change in decolonization thought in the period immediately following WWII and the formation of the United Nations. This paper examines the 22 sovereign nations and 9 semi-autonomous dependent territories that border the Caribbean sea to determine the presence of significant structural differences between Caribbean nations that gained sovereignty during the pre-1945, \u27early-period\u27- characterized by violent, unplanned popular uprisings; in the post-1945, \u27late-period\u27- characterized by diplomacy and favorable economic and political relationships between young nations and FCPs; and semi-autonomous territories still under the control of colonial nations. Based on data from the World Development Index, World Governance Index, Human Development Index, and created dummy variables to control for sovereignty changes and intrinsic 9th Edition 58 differences between different FCPs, I have identified very strong evidence that early-period independent nations have significantly lower economic development, score significantly lower on indicators of good governance, and have had significantly slower progress in industrialization and technological advancement than both late-period independent nations and semi-autonomous territories. This research challenges long-held thought about decolonization strategies, provides valuable insight into the value of relationships between young nations and their FCPs, and identifies potential hazards of poorly planned decolonization
Predator Kill Zones: Wolf spiders chemically detect where a predator has killed a conspecific and respond adaptively
The wolf spider Pardosa milvina exhibits adaptive antipredator responses in the presence of silk and excreta from a larger co-occurring predatory wolf spider, Tigrosa helluo. Since wolf spiders deposit silk as they move through the environment, the quantity and quality of silk deposition may change in areas where wolf spiders capture and consume prey. These “kill zones” may provide information about increased predation risk to prey and induce corresponding increased antipredator behavior that, in turn, enhances prey survival. We measured silk patterns produced by the predator, Tigrosa, as well as the prey, Pardosa. We also measured predator attack behavior, Pardosa activity level, and survival on each of these substrates. Our findings suggest that Pardosa can identify areas of predation (i.e. kill zones) using only information in silk and excreta and that this information translates into increased survival and reduced predation attempts in the presence of a live predator
Determining the relative effectiveness of different RNAi lines at knocking down the hedgehog signaling pathway in various Drosophila tissues
The hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway has been studied extensively in Drosophila, and is crucial for axonogenesis and patterning events in early embryo development. The Hh protein relieves suppression of transmembrane Smoothed (Smo), resulting in an intracellular cascade that activates Cubitus interruptus (Ci), a transcription factor that regulates Hh target gene expression. Smo RNAi lines were used to inhibit Hh target gene expression. Prior studies using RNAi lines to knock down gene expression in Drosophila have found varying levels of severity in phenotypes across tissues, with short hairpin typically producing the strongest loss-of-function phenotype. Four RNAi lines were used: 2 Valium 20 (short hairpin), 1 VDRC (short hairpin), and 1 Valium 10 (long hairpin). With the variability in effectiveness of RNAi lines across tissues, is unclear which RNAi line will be the most effective at reducing Hedgehog target gene expression in midline glia, but it will likely be a short hairpin line
Race and Reproductive Rights: Eugenic Practices Throughout the 20th Century American History
This project focuses on the different experiences of white and Latina women throughout the 20th century. I argue that throughout the 20th century, American cultural values highlighted the perceived need for population control, which eugenicists promoted as “family planning” efforts to the detriment of women of color\u27s reproductive freedoms. Madrigal v Quilligan, in which ten women fought against the injustice they had suffered at the LA County Hospital, is used as a case study. By examining concurrent experiences of white and Latina women throughout the twentieth century, we can observe the dissonance between these two groups and what they were fighting for
