Paleoecological analysis of shell beds from the Trimmers Rock Formation (Upper Devonian- Frasnian) along PA State Route 322
This study involved point counting fossils in stained thin sections to determine if shell hash beds from a section of the Trimmers Rock Formation (Upper Devonian) in Central Pennsylvania could be used to identify characteristics of a paleocommunity. Near shore, proximal slope communities exhibited the greatest abundance of broken crinoids, tentaculites, and brachiopods. The deeper distal ramp environment contained the highest abundance of bryozoans, but also contained more intact pieces of crinoids, tentaculites and brachiopods. These mostly sessile, benthic filter feeding organisms were influenced by different energies in the environments like the intermittent turbidity current, as well as the occasional hyperpycnal flow
Preliminary Identification of Volatiles Produced by the Nursery Web Spider Pisaurina Mira
Volatiles produced by spiders are being characterized by Solid Phase Micro Extraction (SPME) followed by analysis by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). Spiders communicate through silk and associated pheromones. Some studies have identified different volatile chemicals produced by spiders or their silk that serve as sexual or conspecific attractants. Spider silk and volatiles may serve to repel or inhibit crop pests from feeding on plants. These observations have led to increased interest in identifying spider-produced volatiles that may mediate and manipulate insect pest behavior and serve as a safe, targeted, and effective alternative to traditional insecticides as part of an integrated pest management system. The nurseryweb spider Pisaurina mira is a common vegetation-inhabiting sit-and-wait predator that can be found in and adjacent to agricultural systems. These spiders were screened for volatile chemicals released by using SPME to absorb any volatiles produced. The absorbed product volatiles were then analyzed using GC/MS. Sub-adult males and females, adult males, and adult unmated and mated females were screened to identify and discriminate between male and female-specific sex pheromones and other species-wide odorants. Volatile odorants have been preliminarily identified and are likely to be homosalate, benzyl benzoate, and diisobutyl adipate derivatives. Evaluation of GC/MS chromatograms will continue to confirm the identity of the volatiles, and additional behavioral studies will be performed to identify the communication function, if any, of these compounds

As different creative directors take the helm of major fashion labels, their vision for the brand’s direction emerges from this overarching identity. In addition to collections, shows, retail locations, and other promotional outlets, a large part of a brand’s identity is reinforced by its advertising content. That being said, in advertising, the signification of an image is undoubtedly intentional. This study analyzes the strategic signification of Paris based fashion house Saint Laurent Paris advertisements during Hedi Slimane’s tenure as creative director from 2012-2016. The ultimate goal of this research is to identify and explore visual signifiers in specific advertising campaigns to understand how images are coded to reinforce Saint Laurent Paris’ brand identity and subsequently drive sales

Diversity Awareness: How Pre-service Teachers Notions of Diversity Were Effected After Attending a Multi-cultural Conference
Pre-service educators need to become aware of how to interact with diverse students and school settings before they enter the classroom. Trainings and multi-cultural awareness opportunities need to be provided to pre-service educators and they need to be researched in order to evaluate relevant impact. This article describes a multicultural conference that provided several workshops and discussions to pre-service teachers about a variety of topics related to diversity. Pre-service teachers who attended the conference provided reflections about their experiences that were analyzed which gave insights into how pre-service teachers notions of diversity were impacted or challenged. Findings were that attending a one day conference on diversity issues made an impact on pre-service teacher’s notions of diversity and provided the pre-service teachers with specific strategies for future classroom instruction. The findings are useful to academicians and educational professionals who are interested in better preparing teacher candidates for the inclusive environment they will face upon graduation
The Long Way Home: Collected Stories
This reading is comprised of works of short stories and short-short fiction selected from my current manuscript, written in the hopes of meriting Departmental Honors in Creative Writing. Throughout this project I have personally aimed to dissolve the limitations that a strict separation of fiction and non-fiction had previously created in my work. With these collected works, I write home to explore the conflicts and conditions that I experienced growing up in Queens, New York. I hope to expose the harsh exteriority and the delicate sentiments of Queens to my readers in a fictionalized exploration of home
Burrowing and escape responses among riparian and non-riparian populations of wolf spiders
Many riparian species have evolved adaptations to respond to rising water either through avoidance or submersion tolerance. We examined differences in submersion tolerance and burrowing behaviors among riparian and non-riparian populations of different wolf spider species. We also measured maximum burrow depth and escape behaviors of three species of burrowing wolf spider from riparian and non-riparian populations during a simulated flood event. Riparian wolf spiders had significantly shorter recovery times from submergence than non-riparian populations of the same species. We also found no significant differences across species in submergence tolerance. Of the three burrowing species, riparian spiders showed a marginally non-significant trend toward shorter escape times from burrows during simulated flooding and tended to have shallower burrows than the same species from non-riparian populations, however we found significant species differences in flood response that masked differences in riparian and non-riparian populations
The effect of single and multiple predator cues on survival, foraging and antipredator responses of the wolf spider, Pardosa milvina
Animals should allocate defensive responses proportional to the perceived threat. The wolf spider Pardosa milvina shows effective antipredator behavior in the presence of chemical cues from the co-occurring predatory wolf spider, Tigrosa helluo, which represents a chronic daily predation threat. The fishing spider Dolomedes tenebrosus is allotopic to Pardosa but, because of microhabitat preferences, is less likely to encounter Pardosa. We used differences in these species space use and encounter frequencies with Pardosa to independently manipulate perceived predation risk and measure Pardosa response to cues produced by these predators. We measured variation in Pardosa antipredator response to chemical cues produced from either Dolomedes, Tigrosa, or both species simultaneously and manipulated the location of these cues on vertical or horizontal surfaces. We quantified the foraging costs and survival benefits of such behaviors. Overall Pardosa discriminated between cues from Tigrosa and Dolomedes and showed adaptive graded responses proportional to the perceived threat
Text Mining Course at Susquehanna University
My project was to design a text mining course that could be taught at Susquehanna. I looked into what is text mining. Found a collection of syllabi of other universities to find out how it is being taught in other classes. I then recommend how I think it should be taught here at Susquehanna including programming language used and a book for the course
Chemical composition of an acetone extract of Vitis riparia
To determine if the riverbank grape, vitis riparia, contained useful polyphenols or resveratrol oligomer units, a large sample of ground leaves and stems were extracted and fractioned with dry celite packing and the use of acetone in solid phase chromatography. Fractions were isolated based on polarity and Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) of resulting fractions allowed further separation. Combiflash solid phase chromatography was used to further separate like fractions, which were dried and identified using NMR spectroscopy. Data of separated compounds revealed the presence of several long fatty acid chains, waxes, phetophytin A, and sitosterol, the latter being a member of phytosterol compounds that has potential to decrease blood cholesterol levels and aid in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Unique fractions have since been found and are being identified. Attempts to separate polyphenolic compounds from vitis riparia have not yet been fruitful, but all fractions have yet to be identified
