Egalitarian Influences and Views on Marriage and Family Expectations
The purpose of this study is to examine how childhood family structures affect students’ current views on marriage and family. The Egalitarian Sex Role Attitudes Questionnaire was used to measure students’ attitudes toward sex roles, marriage, divorce, premarital sex, cohabitation without marriage, non-marital childbearing, extramarital sex, and bearing children. Demographic information was collected regarding age, gender, graduation year, race/ethnicity, family life, religious affiliation, and parent/parental figures. I predict that the type of family structure a person experienced as a child will influence that person’s beliefs and expectations about their own future marriage and family. Seeing firsthand if young adults are influenced by their parental and family structures will allow researchers to examine possible marriage and family trends in the future. This research is also useful for seeing if Susquehanna students’ expectations align with the expectations found in existing research. Keywords: marriage, family, expectations, egalitarian role
Presidential Job Approval’s Lack of Influence on Partisanship and Political Ideology
Deciphering which social groups help influence people\u27s’ partisanships and political ideologies can provide us with a better understanding of the American electorate. Based on Karl Mannheim’s generational imprint theory and past research that suggests peoples’ birth cohorts can shape their partisanships and political ideologies, this study aimed to see if an individual’s overall partisanship and ideology would be influenced by the job approval of the sitting president during their impressionable youth. Using data from the Gallup Poll and the American National Election Studies of 2008, 2012 and 2016, several linear regression analyses were conducted that examined the average presidential approval ratings of four-year administrations in relation to the party identification, and political ideologies of the corresponding age cohorts. Across these statistical analyses, presidential job approval was found to have no effect on age cohorts’ partisanships or political ideologies
Resistance and the Riot: Anti-Vietnam War Protests in the American South
Disagreements against higher authorities are vital to the health of nations, allowing those who are governed to openly question whether acts by governments are moral and just, or immoral and unwarranted. The act of publicly voicing opinions and demonstrating the injustices of the world is not a new concept, and it will not likely go out of fashion in the near future. If anything, it is more relatable now than it ever has been before, due to recent events like the rise of school shootings and younger Americans speaking out against the gun violence they face frequently. The most striking of these demonstrations and protests are not the ones that are led by the older generations, but the ones that are organized and carried out by the youth of the world. Nothing is more of a shock to the system, than the young minds of a society confronting and accusing the people in power. One particularly strong example of unsettled youths can be found during the Vietnam War—the collegiate
Synthesis and antioxidant evaluation of thioether derivatives of thymol
Thymol is a monoterpene phenol which is found in significant amounts in the essential oils of thyme and oregano. The biological activities of thymol include antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, antioxidant and insecticidal effects. The current study is focused on the synthesis and antioxidant studies of a series of sulfur containing heterocyclic derivatives of thymol, namely benzimidazole, benzoxazole, benzothiazole, amino thiadiazole, picolinic oxadiazole, nicotinic oxadiazole and isonicotinic oxadiazole. The synthesis of the thymol derivatives was achieved in three steps, with yields ranging from 46-96%. The compounds were characterized using NMR spectroscopy, and the antioxidant capacity for each derivative was measured using the cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) assay method. The benzimidazole, picolinic oxadiazole, and amino thiadiazole derivatives showed stronger antioxidant capacity than thymol, ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and trolox, a derivative of vitamin E
Having ADHD, and It\u27s Impact on Being a Teacher
As an individual who early on was diagnosed with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, I have had many challenging experiences throughout my own education. As I work toward my degree in Early Childhood Education, I am now faced with a new set of challenges to overcome as a teacher. I am curious to learn how my experiences and skill set will shape my teaching practice, as well as my impact of fellow educators and students alike. My study examines my own growth and development throughout my student teaching placement, particularly with regards to my disability. I have collected and evaluated many records and reflections that explore the challenges that poor organizational skills and inattention present me in my classroom. More importantly, I have examined what strategies I have needed to develop, and how these strategies might affect the experience and education of my students. This study was guided by the overall essential question: How does background knowledge of ADHD affect my teaching practice
Fluvial Island Processes Influencing River Quality Dynamics through Geometric and Biophysical Measurements on the Main Stem of the Susquehanna River
Throughout the uprising issue of preserving water quality in the Susquehanna River, the complexities of the river system have been extensively studied with the absence of focusing on fluvial islands and their processes. Fluvial islands compose important hydrological and ecological features that can indirectly determine past behavioral status as well as indicate the condition of the river. A site located at the confluence of the Susquehanna River and that is accessible from the Isle of Que was used to collect information on biophysical and geometrical which were used to make inferences about the condition of the river. Parameters that were used included surveying vegetation, conducting a sediment analysis by sieve and hydrometer testing, and using Corbicula fluminea. Furthermore, the results were gathered in hopes to raise awareness about how fluvial islands can be included in river restoration projects as well as help to understand the dynamics of the river
The effects of altitude and temperature on gene expression in Drosophila melanogaster
With global surface temperatures steadily increasing over the past couple of centuries due to harmful greenhouse gasses building up, habitat ranges for insect populations have been increasing at higher altitudes. All aerobic species have different mechanisms to regulate gene expression while under hypoxic conditions; these gene factors are known as hypoxia induced factors (HIFs). There have been many studies examining hypoxic environmental effects on gene expression and development, however there have not been many studies regarding low pressure environments that would be seen at higher altitudes. Fruit flies (Drospohila melanogaster) are an ideal species to observe because they are economically efficient, easily maintained, and have a well understood genome. We exposed newly emerged fruit flies to a low pressure environment and low temperature environments equivalent to the highest human settlements, in the Himalayas, at an altitude of around 6,000 m above sea level, simulated inside a hypobaric chamber. This environment is becoming increasingly more effected by increasing global surface temperatures. By using 24h old ovaries, the DNA was converted into cDNA in order to perform real-time PCR and PCR analysis, to examine the potential genetic effects this environment could induce. By examining three genes: SIMA (HIF), Yolkless (Yolk receptor protein), CHICO, and Housekeeping Genes, this will tell us if reduced ambient pressure will affect gene expressions in male and female fruit flies. We expect to see an over expression of SIMA and an under expression of Yolkless in females, which, will help us to obtain a better understanding of the ability of the fruit flies to survive and reproduce within the high altitude conditions
The Economic Impact of Women: The Effects of Female Labor Participation on Economic Growth in Europe, 1986-2016
The aim of this study is to assess the correlation between females in the labor force and the GDP per capita growth rate in the following 16 European states: United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and Spain. A panel regression was conducted using GDP per capita growth rate as the dependent variable and the national percentage of female labor force rate, female labor force rate with an advanced education, the percentage of females employed in services, the fertility rate, the GDP per capita in US dollars (lagged by one year), inflation, trade, and gross capital formation as independent variables. It can be concluded with statistical significance that females in the labor force impact economic growth. The results convey how an increase in the female labor force rate with an advanced education could stimulate economic growth
Sex differences in binge-like EtOH drinking, corticotropin-releasing hormone and corticosterone: effects of β-endorphin
Binge drinking is an increasingly common pattern of risky use associated with numerous health problems, including alcohol use disorders. Because low basal plasma levels of βendorphin (β-E) and an increased β-E response to alcohol are evident in genetically at-risk human populations, this peptide is thought to contribute to the susceptibility for disordered drinking. Animal models suggest that the effect of β-E on consumption may be sex-dependent. Here, we studied binge-like EtOH consumption in transgenic mice possessing varying levels of β-E: wild-type controls with 100% of the peptide (β-E +/+), heterozygous mice constitutively modified to possess 50% of wild-type levels (β-E +/−) and mice entirely lacking the capacity to synthesize β-E (−/−). These three genotypes and both sexes were evaluated in a 4-day, two-bottle choice, drinking in the dark paradigm with limited access to 20% EtOH. β-E deficiency determined sexually divergent patterns of drinking in that β-E −/− female mice drank more than their wild-type counterparts, an effect not observed in male mice. β-E −/− female mice also displayed elevated basal anxiety, plasma corticosterone and corticotropin-releasing hormone mRNA in the extended amygdala, and all of these were normalized by EtOH self-administration. These data suggest that a heightened risk for excessive EtOH consumption in female mice is related to the drug\u27s ability to ameliorate an overactive anxiety/stress-like state. Taken together, our study highlights a critical impact of sex on neuropeptide regulation of EtOH consumption
