    Evaluating Auditory Processing in Adolescents and Adults Following a Sports-Related Concussion

    Sports-related concussions (SRCs) have gained increasing attention in recent years due to the long-lasting effects. While concussions have been extensively studied, the impact on auditory processing in adolescents and adults remains an under-evaluated area within audiology. This gap in research is noteworthy as audiologists are well-positioned to conduct auditory processing disorder (APD) testing, and post-concussion auditory deficits fall within the scope of their practice. This study addresses the lack of consensus on concussion definitions, limited accurate prevalence data, and the absence of guidelines for assessing auditory processing in post-concussion individuals in the audiology field. The research aims to provide a framework for evaluating auditory processing in adults with a history of sports-related concussions. The research findings reveal a compelling link between concussions and APD, with individuals who have experienced multiple concussions exhibiting significant deficits, particularly in listening in noisy environments. The overlap of symptoms experienced following a concussion and those associated with APD (e.g., inattentiveness, difficulty pulling valuable information out of background noise, and a lack of auditory memory) and the overlap of affected anatomical structures such as the corpus callosum, midbrain, and temporal lobe indicate the need for audiological involvement. These connections between concussions and auditory processing difficulties underscore the importance of considering auditory processing assessments in the broader context of post-concussion care alongside a multidisciplinary team. By highlighting the relationship between concussions and APD, this research aims to contribute valuable insights to the field of audiology. The conclusions provide a foundation for the development of standardized clinical guidelines by professional organizations, facilitating more effective evaluation and treatment of post-concussive auditory processing deficits. This research addresses a critical gap in the field, emphasizing the vital role of audiologists in comprehensive care for post-concussion individuals

    The prevalence of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) among youth in farming communities is a pressing issue, primarily due to prolonged exposure to loud farm environments. Effective health communication techniques that focus on education and NIHL prevention are essential to convey critical health messages to young individuals in agricultural communities. The Dangerous Decibels program employs these techniques, emphasizing the identification of hazardous noises, understanding the consequences of noise overexposure, and promoting hearing protection measures. It is crucial to acknowledge that the effectiveness of health communication messages can vary among different social groups, necessitating a tailored program to effectively inform young individuals in agriculture about the risks of loud noise exposure and protective measures. This customized approach draws parallels with successful adaptations of the program for youth firearm users and military families and holds significant potential for the well-being of farm youth. The adaptations to the Dangerous Decibels program for youth in farming communities have been thoughtfully crafted to retain the program\u27s core content, module structure, and associated learning activities. The modified Dangerous Decibels program for farm youth incorporates several alterations throughout its modules, including the emphasis on presenters with ties to the farming community, the introduction of the concept of acoustic trauma relevant to firearm use, simulation of high-frequency hearing loss using additional farm-related sounds, addressing noise exposure risks specific to agriculture, providing information on electronic hearing protection devices, and adapting scenarios to better relate to the social pressures and stigma faced by young individuals engaged in farming. These adaptations are strategically implemented to align with the needs and experiences of youth in the farming community while upholding the core objectives of the program. The adapted Dangerous Decibels program necessitates a strategic approach to dissemination, with a focus on reaching young individuals in farming communities through agricultural organizations and events. Overcoming challenges, such as establishing connections with relevant organizations and addressing potential reluctance to endorse hearing health initiatives, is crucial. Future directions involve evaluating the program\u27s effectiveness through questionnaires to assess its impact on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, thereby providing insights into its potential success among youth in farming communities

    Strategies for Reducing Auditory Risk from a Typical Drum Set

    Percussionists are at risk for noise-induced hearing loss. They are especially at risk because of the type of sound produced by their instrument – impact noise. The quick onset and offset times combined with the high peak intensity levels can create permanent damage to the auditory system. Damage to the auditory system because of excessive exposure to music is called a music-induced hearing disorder (MIHD). A MIHD may manifest as many different permanent disorders including music-induced hearing loss, tinnitus, decreased sound tolerance, diplacusis, or dysacusis. Symptoms of these disorders may affect the musicians in their art and their jobs as many musicians rely on their perception of sound and music to play their instruments. Sound exposure can be damaging depending on two factors – the intensity level that the musician is exposed to and the duration of the exposure. Reducing the intensity level of the sound and the duration of the exposure can help protect the musician from permanent auditory damage. Many products on the market offer a safer listening and playing experience for musicians including percussion-specific equipment. If auditory damage has already occurred, the musician should visit an audiologist who can provide them with care for their MIHD and education about safe sound exposure limits. Best practice guidelines for the audiologist are outlined in Chapter II of the document and include thorough education and verified care and services. Music-induced hearing disorders are preventable. It is the duty of the audiologist to spread awareness and education to percussionists and all musicians for the prevention of MIHD
