Implementing Practice With Children Affected by Trauma in the Field of Speech-language Pathology
Get PDFThere is currently a lack of research in the field of Speech-Language Pathology regarding the understanding and implementation of appropriate practice when working with children who have experienced a variety of forms of trauma, including maltreatment. Previous research has shown a significant correlation between trauma exposure and speech and language deficiencies, so children who fall in this group are often involved in speech-language pathology services. Therefore, it is essential that clinicians in this field obtain a better understanding of how to implement appropriate trauma-informed care. This research poses the question, “What is the relationship between childhood maltreatment and the development of speech and language skills, and how can SLPs best design their practice when working with children affected by trauma including maltreatment?” The purpose of this research is to obtain a better understanding of how children who have experienced trauma can receive the most appropriate and beneficial services in the field of Speech-Language Pathology, due to the prevalence of trauma history in children as it relates to speech and language development. Research has been conducted through qualitative processes including virtual interviews with Speech-Language Pathologists. Responses have been compiled and interpreted using thematic analysis to create a product of all of the information obtained from each participant and determine an effective answer to this question. Potential limitations to this study may include small sample size, minimal variation in years of participant experience and location, and short duration of interviews

History of Physical Neglect and Current Food Insecurity: Moderation by Mental Health Symptoms
Get PDFFood insecurity has been a topic of concern for many years. While many actions have been taken to try to reduce rates of food insecurity, further research should investigate whether certain events may increase likelihood of this experience. Thus far, a large amount of research has been completed on how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can impact chances of experiencing food insecurity as well as how mental health symptoms can impact these chances. However, there is little research showing that mental health symptoms may moderate the relationship between having ACEs and food insecurity as an adult. A sample of 124 university students were given a measure of childhood maltreatment, a specific ACE, as well as self-report surveys of mental health symptoms and food insecurity. All types of childhood maltreatment were correlated with elevated challenges with mental health. Food insecurity was predicted by current mental health symptoms and childhood maltreatment, with history of physical neglect showing the strongest correlation. Moderation analysis demonstrated that the pathway between a history of physical neglect and current food insecurity was moderated by current anxiety symptoms. That is, food insecurity was only elevated for participants who had a history of physical neglect and current anxiety. These findings suggest that more specific policies should be put into place to help individuals who have ACEs and experience mental health symptoms to decrease their chances of experiencing food insecurity
Exploring University Student Perceptions of Climate Change Using Connection to Nature and Psychological Distance
Get PDFThe central goal of my dissertation is to better understand undergraduate biology students’ perceptions of climate change specifically using a localized lens. Research relating to climate change perceptions and understanding is common in the K-12 setting; however, there have been far fewer studies that use undergraduate student populations. Undergraduate students represent a new age of the voting populus and are therefore an important demographic to target for inducing environmental change. To foster climate change awareness, concern, and willingness to act in our undergraduate students, we must first understand how they perceive it. Using both quantitative and qualitative approaches I explored what factors influence students’ perceptions of climate change locally by sampling 410 undergraduate biology students. I generally concluded that the framing of climate change (e.g., local vs. global) influences our students’ awareness of its impacts in their local area. By interviewing 16 students, I found that the relationship or connection a student has with natural areas is a strong predictor of students’ awareness of climate change locally. Further, I found that students’ personal experiences in nature contributed to their connection to nature and increased environmental awareness. In my final study, which included 471 undergraduate biology students, I found that some students perceive climate change as distant spatially, socially, and temporally which lowers their environmental awareness of climate change locally and their perception of how it impacts themselves; however, this distance seems to be fluid and can be changed through purposeful classroom instruction. I suggest that instructors reframe their coverage of climate change in the classroom to be more place-based to increase the personal relevance of climate change and reduce its perceived distance
