    Fin De Siècle Russian Topos and Rimsky-Korsakov\u27s The Golden Cockerel

    Russian composers, including Glinka and The Mighty Five, helped establish a fin de siècle Russian nationalistic style in art music through the implementation of idiomatic folk music gestures and other commonly employed musical elements. Scholars, including Richard Taruskin, Barry Bilderback, and Pieter Van Den Toorn, have identified many of these elements, however, they have not provided clear codification of a Russian topic. Likewise, the music of Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov has been largely ignored when compared to that of his contemporaries, though most research indicates he was heralded as a nationalistic composer. The purpose of this research was to create an initial working lexicon of the Russian style through a synthesis of the musical elements identified in the extant scholarship with those derived from an analysis of Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Golden Cockerel. Among the most important of these lexiconic elements are pentatonic and octatonic scales (particularly when connected to a rotation of thirds), the Russian submediant, interpretations or mutations of folk music, and orientalism. While these gestures on their own are not specifically Russian, when used in conjunction with each other, they generate a strongly nationalistic topos. The Golden Cockerel, a musical and theatrical satire of Alexander Pushkin’s 1834 fairytale, is particularly suited to an exploration of this topos. Its use of folkloric theme mutations and allusions to traditional rhythmic patterns, orientalism, the Russian sub-mediant, and pentatonic and octatonic-flavored melodies demonstrates Rimsky-Korsakov’s adherence to this nationalist style. Analysis of the work also reveals its colorful intersections between fantasy and the human world to be an ironic social commentary. Most importantly, this initial lexicon provides a tool for future scholarship that will refine the definition of the topic through comparisons of other works by Rimsky Korsakov and his contemporaries and potentially provide insights into Stravinsky’s unique brand of nationalism

    Development of Polymer-Supported Organic Photoredox Catalysts

    Photoredox catalysis has been a useful tool that has replaced the traditional method of synthesis because of its ability to support reactions that are difficult to carry out under traditional reaction conditions (Nicholls et al., 2016). As traditional methods of synthesis are considered to be environmentally unsustainable and expensive, photoredox catalysis has been known to align well with environmental sustainability and is also cost-effective (Shaw et al., 2016). Photoredox catalysis has been used not only in synthesis but also in carbon dioxide reduction and water purification (Venditto et al., 2024). The method only requires light as a source of energy and a suitable molecule that effectively interacts with light, usually known as a photoredox catalyst, to make transformations occur (Shaw et al., 2016). Complexes of precious transition metals were initially used as photoredox catalysts (Haria & König, 2014). However, they had some limitations, which led to the development of organic photoredox catalysts (Bobo, Kuchta, et al., 2021). Organic photoredox catalysts, especially strongly reducing molecules such as phenoxazines, offer greater stability, lower cost, and improved selectivity (Nicewicz & Nguyen, 2014). These molecules are sensitive to any structural modification, and the type of solvent they are present in, which changes their properties and performance. Various structural modifications have been done on these molecules to fine-tune their properties and performance. However, the modifications result in the discrete form of these molecules, which makes them difficult to recover and reuse (McCarthy et al., 2018). Immobilizing them on polymer supports can enhance performance, recovery, and recyclability (Sridhar et al., 2019). As such, this study focuses on the development and characterization of polymersupported photoredox catalysts (PS-PCs) as a sustainable tool for photochemical transformations. A library of PS-PCs based on phenoxazine was synthesized, incorporating both N-aryl and core-functionalized phenoxazine photoredox catalysts into cyclooctene polymer backbones. These photoredox catalysts were characterized for their photophysical and thermodynamic properties, including solubility, solvatochromism (ability of the PS-PCs to change color in solvents of different polarity), polymer weight and dispersity, absorption, and emission behavior. The performance of the PS-PCs was evaluated in model photochemical reactions, specifically bromoalkylation and cyclopropanation of unactivated alkenes, to assess their reactivity and recovery potential. The results revealed the success of the catalyst\u27s recovery and the solvatochromic behavior of the PS-PCs. It also demonstrates that while the absorption profiles of the PS-PCs did not significantly influence their catalytic activity, the emission profiles, molecular weight, and dispersity played critical roles in determining their performance. Notably, PS-PCs with lower molecular weight and narrower dispersity exhibited superior catalytic efficiency, particularly in the bromoalkylation reaction. This work emphasizes the potential of PS-PCs as greener tools for organic synthesis

    Evaluating the Indirect Effect of Microaffirmations on Intersecting Marginalized Identities and School Sense of Belonging Among School Psychology Graduate Students

    There is a discrepancy between the proportion of school psychologists identified as racially, ethnically, or linguistically diverse (REL) in the United States and the proportion of REL students they serve (Blake et al., 2016; Proctor & Owens, 2019). Current data estimates over 80% of school psychologists identify as white (Goforth et al., 2021), whereas more than 50% of U.S. public school students have non-white racial/ethnic identities (Irwin et al., 2024). In addition to increased recruitment of REL students to school psychology graduate programs, trainers in these programs must implement effective strategies to ensure retention. One method is to increase students’ sense of belonging to school. Research on university students shows a link between high sense of belonging and retention (Hoffman et al., 2002; Pedler et al., 2022). These feelings of value and acceptance may be tenuous for those whose identities are not well represented by others in their programs (Rainey et al., 2018). For those with multiple marginalized identities, belonging may be even more elusive (R. Williams et al., 2024). Microaffirmations, subtle messages of inclusion and support, may have the potential to negate low belongingness among REL students. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between graduate students’ marginalized identities and sense of belonging among school psychology graduate students in the United States and to assess whether microaffirmations acted as a protective factor. It sought to answer two research questions: Is a student’s sense of belonging affected by the number of intersecting underrepresented identities they possess? Do microaffirmations mediate the relationship between marginalized identities and belonging? This research examined survey data from 300 U.S. school psychology graduate students (Hulac et al., 2024). An analysis of variance test found a small (η2 = .077) but significant effect showing the more marginalized identities a student possessed, the lower their sense of belonging score. A conditional process analysis found a small mediating effect (R2 = .0682) of more targeted microaffirmations on this relationship but no mediating effect of microaffirmations as a broad construct. Implications and the potential for future research are discussed

    Poetry spaces provide a place where young people can express themselves and develop skills like critical thinking, empathy, and creativity. They empower young people, particularly those at the margins of society. I organized an extracurricular poetry club, Yo Misma, with Latina adolescents in which we read the work of ten Latin American women poets. As a result of the experience, club members made connections between the poems and their own lives. Furthermore, reading poems by poets they identified helped the girls to find their own voices, both as readers and writers

    An Audiologists Guide to Diagnosing Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

    Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a common vestibular disorder characterized by sudden and brief episodes of dizziness triggered by specific head movements. This manuscript provides an exploration of BPPV, including its etiology, clinical presentation within the videonystagmography test battery, and proposed risk factors and preventative measures. To provide a foundational understanding, an overview of both the peripheral and central vestibular systems will be included, as well as content highlighting the vestibular structures affected by this disorder. Additionally, the relationship between the vestibular system and the vestibulo-ocular reflex is explored, emphasizing the dysfunctional response of nystagmus and its diagnostic significance. Given the complexity of BPPV, accurate diagnosis and personalized management strategies are crucial for healthcare professionals to fully appreciate. Therefore, various treatment approaches, including canalith repositioning procedures, vestibular rehabilitation therapy, and for severe cases, surgical interventions, will be discussed. Despite extensive research on BPPV, gaps in the literature remain. Finally, current limitations are analyzed which form future directions for research, aiming ultimately to further the understanding and management of this vestibular disorder

    Determining the Causation of Microphthalmia in Cannabidiol Treated Zebrafish Embryos

    Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid derived from the plant cannabis sativa. Multiple studies on CBD show that it is used as an anti-psychotic, an anti-inflammatory for pain relief, and an antinausea agent. The Agriculture Improvement Act (2018) played a role in removing hemp and hemp derivatives like CBD from being categorized as a Schedule I substance, which led to recreational usage in America. In 2003, there was an increase in cannabinoid consumption during pregnancy to alleviate morning sickness along with distress. Prior studies on CBD-treated zebrafish embryos have demonstrated phenotypes of microphthalmia, scoliosis, fewer neuronal connections, and less motor neuron activity. While previous research identified effects of CBD exposure like microphthalmia, the mechanism behind the reduction in eye size remains unclear. Are there fewer cells, or are the cells smaller? Zebrafish are utilized as a model organism for early human development. Human and zebrafish have 70% gene similarity for cannabinoid receptors, along with similar cellular signaling and tissue locations of cannabinoid receptors. Using a previous experimental design that observed microphthalmia, we aimed to determine how CBD affects early eye development. [High] CBD-treated embryos had a significant decrease in survival rate when compared to wild-type survival (p \u3c 0.05). To determine if a decrease in cell count was associated with microphthalmia, we counted cells using DAPI and measured cell size using phalloidin in [high] CBD-treated versus untreated embryos via confocal microscopy. Confocal images were cropped to equal sizes and adjusted equally for brightness and contrast. Channels were split to show each stain individually for 1 optical micron section. [High] CBD had fewer cells without a decreased cell size, particularly at 4mg/L. It is unclear if this reduction in cell count is due to a lack of migration, increased cell death, or decreased mitosis

    Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss: Need for Patient-Focused Care

    Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is an acute auditory condition marked by the rapid onset of hearing loss, often without an identifiable cause, termed idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss. The estimated incidence of sudden sensorineural hearing loss is 5 to 20 per 100,000 adults. Anatomy and physiology of the ear highlights the important mechanisms in the ear that are involved in sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Including the type of hearing loss, (sensorineural), and the importance of the cochlear blood supply. The anatomy and physiology of the ear is the foundation for understanding the pathophysiology and various potential mechanisms, including vascular compromise, viral infections, and cochlear membrane disruption. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss has diverse audiometric presentations and prognostic factors, such as variations in audiogram configurations, initial symptoms, and timing of treatment on recovery outcomes. Current treatment options include corticosteroids and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Audiologists play a crucial role in SSNHL management through diagnostic evaluation, patient monitoring, and rehabilitation, working in tandem with physicians to follow professional guidelines. Effective patient care requires a blend of informational and emotional counseling in order to address both technical and psychological aspects of sudden sensorineural hearing loss. The Four Habits model emphasizes empathy and patient-centered communication, improving outcomes by focusing on understanding the patient’s perspective and emotional needs. For improved diagnostics, treatment, and patient-centered care there needs to be standardization within the literature for definitions and clinical guidelines. There also needs to be future research on a patient’s quality of life and the psychological impacts of sudden sensorineural hearing loss. This manuscript provides a literature review on sudden sensorineural hearing loss as well as clinical insights and patient-centered approaches for healthcare providers to optimize patient outcomes with timely interventions and effective counseling strategies
