    N-Aryl Phenoxazines as Polymer Supported Photocatalysts

    In photosynthesis, the energy of sunlight is perfectly harnessed to facilitate the production of small molecules that are essential for plant life on earth. Inspired by this model of energy efficiency and simplicity, this work seeks to mimic that ability to use the energy in visible light to perform new and more efficient chemistries. Just like in photosynthesis, photocatalysts can act as chromophores absorbing light to excite electrons opening new pathways for previously untapped reactivity. Recent research has provided a wide range of small molecule reactions that are made possible or easier by the use of a photocatalyst. However, these powerful catalysts can be difficult to recover and recycle. This work outlines the development of two polymer supported photocatalysts (PS-PCs) attached to poly(methyl methacrylate). The purpose of this research is to incorporate an N-aryl phenoxazine photocatalyst motif onto a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) backbone to increase recoverability. A synthetic technique was developed to efficiently synthesize these PS-PCs on a small scale. A self-organocatalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization was used to successfully synthesize a range of PS-PCs on a milligram scale. The approach did not necessitate extra catalysts and opened a door to the potential for the development of a self-catalyzed controlled radical polymerization. The synthesized PS-PCs were then characterized to reveal the potential of structure-property relationships. The photophysical characteristics of the PS-PCs differed based on their connectivity to the polymer support. This indicates that attachment of photocatalysts to a polymer support could not only improve recovery rates but also provide a new handle for structural modification. These structure property relationships could allow for increased rational design of PS-PCs to accomplish desirable small molecule reactions. The PS-PCs were then tested in model reactions to determine if their unique differences in photophysical properties correlated to new reactivity. These model reactions revealed that the polymer support could in some cases provide a distinct environment for the photocatalyst. This led to differing selectivity in different environments when compared to a molecular photocatalyst. Overall, this work shows a synthesis of PS-PCs with distinct structure-property relationships that yield unique reactivity

    Meaning in Occupational Therapy Practice: A Mixed Methods Study Exploring Perceived Meaning and Burnout In Occupational Therapists

    Decreasing burnout and increasing retention of occupational therapists (OTs) is a pressing issue in the field as attrition rates and intention to leave the profession are on the rise. One of the core tenets of occupational therapy (OT) practice is supporting recipients with engaging in meaningful occupations to promote wellbeing. While burnout in the profession has been more widely researched, very little research has explored how OTs perceive meaning in their own practice. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to explore the lived experiences of how OTs perceive meaning and meaning gaps in the profession, as well as to better understand the relationship between perceived meaning and burnout in the OT profession. With data from 100 survey participants and six individual interview participants, this study found that OTs experience moderate levels of perceived meaning in their OT practice, as well as high levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, while simultaneously experiencing high levels of personal accomplishment. Several core themes contribute novel data to how OTs perceive meaning, meaning gaps, and burnout in their OT practice: job fit, “master your craft,” “reality doesn’t match the training,” and making a difference. This study fills an important gap in the existing literature by examining perceived meaning as a factor that may contribute to, or protect from, burnout and subsequent attrition in the field

    Rural Secondary Principals’ Perceptions of Their Role in Transition Planning for Students with Disabilities

    The purpose of this instrumental case study was to investigate rural secondary principals’ perceptions of their role and challenges experienced in transition planning for students with disabilities. Transition planning for students with disabilities has been federally mandated since the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 1990), emphasizing positive postsecondary outcomes. However, limited research has existed on principals’ roles, particularly in rural contexts. Participants included 11 principals from small rural districts across 5 regions in Colorado. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using a hybrid approach of inductive and deductive coding, guided by Kohler et al.’s (2016) Taxonomy for Transition Programming 2.0. Trustworthiness was ensured through member checking, peer debriefing, reflexive journaling, and an audit trail. Findings revealed three key themes: principals identified their roles as resource navigators, skill developers, and collaborators. Challenges within the rural context included serving multiple roles, staffing limitations, logistical barriers, external agency constraints, community and environmental difficulties, and attitudinal barriers from parents and the community. Implications for practice suggested incorporating special education law and transition planning into principal preparation programs, explicitly training principals in transition services using frameworks like Kohler’s Taxonomy and providing ongoing professional development. Principals, particularly those entering through alternative licensure, should be empowered to strategically advocate for resources addressing special education staffing shortages. Clarifying responsibilities among school personnel, Board of Educational Cooperative Services (BOCES), and external agencies can enhance service delivery and collaboration. Policies and procedures should utilize post-school outcome data, specifically indicators 1 (graduation rate), 2 (dropout rate), 13 (transition goals and services in the IEP), and 14 (post-school outcomes). These indicators provided accountability metrics to ensure equitable, individualized transition supports. Future research should focus on effective interagency collaboration strategies, the impact of principal leadership on transition outcomes, and principals’ roles in advocating for systemic improvements in rural education

    Student Veterans\u27 Attitudes Towards Mental Health Issues and Treatments

    Mental health concerns with United States veterans have been a pervasive issue for decades. The changes and evolving nature of the mental health field, including terminology and diagnoses, are believed to discourage veterans from reaching out and asking for help when it is needed most. However, these are not the only reasons why veterans choose not to seek out treatment. It has been found that other reasons include the stigma towards mental health alongside financial, external costs, and hidden costs of treatment. The following study has been conducted to understand the various barriers that hinder student veterans with mental health issues from seeking out treatment. The same research has been administered to better understand how these student veterans can be better supported during and after service. This study consisted of 24 participants who took an anonymous Qualtrics survey sent out to student veteran centers affiliated with universities across the United States. Questions consisted of different areas regarding demographic information, various mental health issues they experienced, attitudes towards mental health issues, and how student veterans believed they can best be supported

    Electronic Hearing Protection: Advancements and Applications

    Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) represents a significant and irreversible public health concern and is classified as the most prevalent occupational illness in the United States (Masterson et al., 2013). Prolonged exposure to hazardous noise levels precipitates auditory impairment and correlates with other comorbid health risks, including tinnitus (Tufts & Berger, 2022). While traditional hearing protection devices (HPDs) have been implemented extensively to mitigate NIHL, persistent issues such as user discomfort, barriers to effective communication, and compromised situational awareness impede their optimal utilization (Melamed et al., 1994; Neitzel & Seixas, 2005). Recent innovations in electronic HPDs have emerged, targeting these limitations through the integration of advanced technologies, including digital signal processing, directional microphones, and Bluetooth® connectivity. These advancements aim to enhance the perception of critical environmental sounds while effectively attenuating harmful noise levels, thus fostering improved situational awareness and interpersonal communication (Giguère et al., 2015). Nonetheless, the efficacy of HPDs in practical applications remains inconsistent, with challenges related to cost, operational complexity, and the necessity for extensive user training. Research conducted by Fostick and Fink (2021) underscores the influence of HPDs on sound localization, highlighting the need for imperative designs that minimize disruption to auditory cues paramount for ensuring workplace safety. This work seeks to compile and analyze the current literature on the effectiveness and challenges of electronic HPDs, specifically focusing on their use in environments with occupational noise. Furthermore, the role of audiologists in the fitting and training of users for optimal outcomes is critically examined. Gaps within the current research landscape are discussed, notably the pressing need for field-based assessments of electronic hearing protection devices (EHPD) performance and advancements in noise-dosimetry integration (Sayler et al., 2019). Electronic hearing protection devices are a class of hearing protection that incorporates both attenuation and electronic components to enhance communication and situational awareness, aiming to balance noise reduction with the ability to perceive environmental sounds in occupational settings (Sayler et al., 2019). By promoting enhancements in the design and usability of HPDs, the audiology discipline can strive to achieve a better equilibrium between hearing protection and communication requirements, ultimately fostering improved hearing conservation practices
