Development of a new bisphenol A electrochemical sensor based on a cadmium(ii) porphyrin modified carbon paste electrode
In this study, the (5,10,15,20-tetrakis[(4-methoxyphenyl)]porphyrinato)cadmium(II) complex ([Cd(TMPP)]) was successfully used as a modifier in a carbon paste electrode (CPE) and exploited for bisphenol A (BPA) detection. Analytical performance revealed two linear ranges from 0.0015–15 μM and 0.015–1.5 mM with a detection limit of 13.5 pM. The proposed method was implemented in water samples, which resulted in quantitative signals over the range 6.5–1000 μM with recoveries between 92.6 and 107.7% for tap water and between 96.6 to 106.0% for mineral water
A shape changing tandem Rh(CNC) catalyst: Preparation of bicyclo[4.2.0]octa- 1,5,7-trienes from terminal aryl alkynes
The preparation of a range of tetraaryl-substituted bicyclo[4.2.0]octa-1,5,7-trienes using a one-pot procedure starting from terminal aryl alkynes and catalysed by a rhodium(i) complex is reported. This synthesis proceeds by a reaction sequence involving head-to-tail homocoupling of the terminal alkyne and zipper annulation of the resulting gem-enyne. The rhodium catalyst employed is notable for the incorporation of a flexible NHC-based pincer ligand, which is suggested to interconvert between mer- and fac-coordination modes to fulfil the orthogonal mechanistic demands of the two transformations. Evidence for this interesting auto-tandem action of the catalyst is provided by reactions of the precatalyst with model substrates, corroborating proposed intermediates in both component cycles, and norbornadiene, which reversibly captures the change in pincer ligand coordination mode, along with a DFT-based computational analysis
Commentary: The need for research on PTSD in Children and adolescents – a commentary on Elliot et al.
The recent release of the 11th version of The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11: WHO, 2018) marked a significant departure from the previous similarities between it and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5; APA, 2013) in terms of their conceptualization of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The ICD-11 proposed a reduced symptom set for PTSD and a sibling disorder called Complex PTSD. There have been numerous studies that have provided support for the integrity of, and distinction between, PTSD and CPTSD diagnoses in adult samples. Elliot and colleagues (2020) have added to the research literature by providing a valuable examination of the differences between ICD and DSM PTSD/CPTSD in a sample of youth aged 8 to 17 years. This commentary reviews this study and reflects on the need for greater understanding of developmental changes in the presentation of PTSD and Complex PTSD
Monitoring the psychological, social, and economic impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic in the population: Context, design and conduct of the longitudinal COVID‐19 psychological research consortium (C19PRC) study
Objectives: The C19PRC study aims to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the adult population of the UK, Republic of Ireland, and Spain. This paper describes the conduct of the first two waves of the UK survey (the "parent" strand of the Consortium) during March-April 2020.
Methods: A longitudinal, internet panel survey was designed to assess: (1) COVID-19 related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors; (2) the occurrence of common mental health disorders as well as the role of (3) psychological factors and (4) social and political attitudes, in influencing the public's response to the pandemic. Quota sampling (age, sex, and household income) was used to recruit a nationally representative sample of adults.
Results: Two thousand and twenty five adults were recruited at baseline, and 1406 were followed-up one-month later (69.4% retention rate). The baseline sample was representative of the UK population in relation to economic activity, ethnicity, and household composition. Attrition was predicted by key socio-demographic characteristics, and an inverse probability weighting procedure was employed to ensure the follow-up sample was representative of the baseline sample.
Conclusion: The C19PRC study data has strong generalizability to facilitate and stimulate interdisciplinary research on important public health questions relating to the COVID-19 pandemic
The relationship between gambling advertising and gambling attitudes, intentions and behaviours: a critical and meta-analytic review
Gambling advertising has become ubiquitous in westernised countries in the last two decades, yet there is little understanding of the relationship between exposure to gambling advertising and gambling attitudes, intentions and behaviour. We conduct a critical and meta-analytic review of the past two decades of empirical research. The research suggests a positive association between exposure to gambling advertising and gambling-related attitudes, intentions and behaviour. The association is greatest for gambling behaviour. There is some evidence for a dose-response relationship. The quality and breadth of research on gambling advertising are weaker than those in comparable areas (e.g., alcohol, tobacco), with an absence of longitudinal and experimental studies. Gaps in, and methodological problems with, the field are discussed, and research directions recommended
Glycosylation in Indolent, Significant and Aggressive Prostate Cancer by Automated High-Throughput N-Glycan Profiling
The diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer (PCa) is a major health-care concern worldwide. This cancer can manifest itself in many distinct forms and the transition from clinically indolent PCa to the more invasive aggressive form remains poorly understood. It is now universally accepted that glycan expression patterns change with the cellular modifications that accompany the onset of tumorigenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate if differential glycosylation patterns could distinguish between indolent, significant, and aggressive PCa. Whole serum N-glycan profiling was carried out on 117 prostate cancer patients’ serum using our automated, high-throughput analysis platform for glycan-profiling which utilizes ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) to obtain high resolution separation of N-linked glycans released from the serum glycoproteins. We observed increases in hybrid, oligomannose, and biantennary digalactosylated monosialylated glycans (M5A1G1S1, M8, and A2G2S1), bisecting glycans (A2B, A2(6)BG1) and monoantennary glycans (A1), and decreases in triantennary trigalactosylated trisialylated glycans with and without core fucose (A3G3S3 and FA3G3S3) with PCa progression from indolent through significant and aggressive disease. These changes give us an insight into the disease pathogenesis and identify potential biomarkers for monitoring the PCa progression, however these need further confirmation studies
Infinite Mixtures of Infinite Factor Analysers
Factor-analytic Gaussian mixtures are often employed as a model-based approach to clustering high-dimensional data. Typically, the numbers of clusters and latent factors must be fixed in advance of model fitting. The pair which optimises some model selection criterion is then chosen. For computational reasons, having the number of factors differ across clusters is rarely considered.
Here the infinite mixture of infinite factor analysers (IMIFA) model is introduced. IMIFA employs a Pitman-Yor process prior to facilitate automatic inference of the number of clusters using the stick-breaking construction and a slice sampler. Automatic inference of the cluster-specific numbers of factors is achieved using multiplicative gamma process shrinkage priors and an adaptive Gibbs sampler. IMIFA is presented as the flagship of a family of factor-analytic mixtures.
Applications to benchmark data, metabolomic spectral data, and a handwritten digit example illustrate the IMIFA model’s advantageous features. These include obviating the need for model selection criteria, reducing the computational burden associated with the search of the model space, improving clustering performance by allowing cluster-specific numbers of factors, and uncertainty quantification
The Non-Traditional (M)Other: The Representation of Young Motherhood and Ambivalent Motherhood in Contemporary German and Irish Films
The aim of this thesis is to analyse how contemporary German and Irish films represent
non-traditional motherhood. I investigate how the films represent young mothers and
ambivalent mothers; I analyse the characters’ roles within society and examine how the
mothers’ family situations influence their maternal experiences. I do so to fill a gap in
current research on non-traditional maternal representations in contemporary European
film. Using a comparative case study, my textual analysis shows that the films share a
representation of the non-traditional mother as the Other, while also presenting
differences that can be related to the national context.
These differences regarding young motherhood, for example, include a focus on
reproductive rights in Irish film and a strong expectation of failure in the German context.
I demonstrate that the films represent the young mothers as socially isolated and that their
bodily autonomy is restricted. In particular, I show how the films represent that society
expects them to fail as mothers. Furthermore, my investigation of the depiction of
ambivalent mothers reveals that they are frequently represented in opposition to both
“natural” and “sacrosanct motherhood,” so that their representation challenges an ideal
image of maternity. My analysis shows that most of the films do not represent non-traditional motherhood in combination with both work and sex, and when they do so, they
frame them as incompatible. Additionally, I show that non-traditional mothers are
dissatisfied with their family situation. In particular, the role of the father influences the
mothers’ perception of their own ability to mother.
This study builds on the framework of maternal discourses that E. Ann Kaplan
identifies in American media of the 1980s and 1990s and develops it to include two
further categories. It adds a European focus by investigating how contemporary German
and Irish films represent both young and ambivalent mother
Body-related discrimination and dieting and substance use behaviors in adolescence
Unfair treatment on the basis of a physical characteristic, such as body weight, is associated with unhealthy dieting behaviors in adolescence and adulthood and has also been implicated in substance use. Peer victimization is likewise associated with these health-risk behaviors. It is unclear, however, whether body discrimination is associated with these behaviors independent of peer victimization. The present research uses data from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC) to test the relation between body discrimination and dieting and substance use behaviors in adolescence and test whether the associations are independent of peer victimization, as well as depressive symptoms which are associated with both forms of victimization and health-risk behaviors. Participants (N = 2955) reported on body discrimination, dieting behaviors, and substance use at ages 14–15. Participants who experienced body discrimination were more likely to report fear of gaining weight, losing control over eating, going without eating, using medicine or vomiting to control their weight, engaging in restrained eating, and exercising to control their weight. They also had tried nicotine, alcohol, and marijuana. The associations with eating and alcohol use were independent of peer victimization, whereas the associations with smoking and marijuana were reduced when peer victimization was included in the model. All associations were also independent of depressive symptoms. Overall, the findings suggest that body discrimination is associated with harmful health behaviors at least as early as age 14
Death anxiety, self-worth, and exposure to human donor remains: A longitudinal study of Irish medical students
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between death anxiety levels at pre-exposure to human donor remains, post-exposure self-worth, and post-exposure death anxiety levels, among a sample of Irish medical students. A multi-wave prospective study was conducted, using questionnaires administered at six time-points. Path analysis was used to investigate the effect of pre-exposure death anxiety levels and post-exposure self-worth on post-exposure death anxiety levels. Baseline death anxiety was found to predict post-exposure death anxiety. Furthermore, self-worth at one month of exposure was found to mediate the relationship between pre-exposure death anxiety levels and death anxiety levels at six months
