Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Loneliness and Social Isolation: A Multi-Country Study
The COVID-19 global pandemic and subsequent public health social measures have challenged our social and economic life, with increasing concerns around potentially rising levels of social isolation and loneliness. This paper is based on cross-sectional online survey data (available in 10 languages, from 2 June to 16 November 2020) with 20,398 respondents from 101 different countries. It aims to help increase our understanding of the global risk factors that are associated with social isolation and loneliness, irrespective of culture or country, to support evidence-based policy, services and public health interventions. We found the prevalence of severe loneliness was 21% during COVID-19 with 6% retrospectively reporting severe loneliness prior to the pandemic. A fifth were defined as isolated based on their usual connections, with 13% reporting a substantial increase in isolation during COVID-19. Personal finances and mental health were overarching and consistently cross-cutting predictors of loneliness and social isolation, both before and during the pandemic. With the likelihood of future waves of COVID-19 and related restrictions, it must be a public health priority to address the root causes of loneliness and social isolation and, in particular, address the needs of specific groups such as carers or those living alone
Top management knowledge value, knowledge sharing practices, open innovation and organizational performance
Open innovation as driver of organizational performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) has received relatively little scholarly attention. Drawing upon the resource-based view and the knowledge-based view of firms, we examined antecedents and outcome of open innovation in SMEs. We collected multisource data from 404 SMEs and used structural equation modeling to test the hypotheses. Our study suggests that top management knowledge value and knowledge creating practices influence open innovation, which, in turn, influences organizational performance. Results of the study are discussed in the light of previous studies and suggest implications for theory and practice of open innovation
Unpacking the role of innovation capability: Exploring the impact of leadership style on green procurement via a natural resource-based perspective
In response to the growing urgency of environmental concerns in civil society, governments have been accelerating their pursuit of green procurement. However, green procurement faces substantial barriers and challenges that are internal to the governmental organizations. Using a natural resource-based view as the theoretical
lens, this study developed and tested a model on how leadership styles and innovation capability influence green
procurement. The findings showed that neither transformational nor transactional leadership styles influence
green procurement, although they do influence innovation capability. Notably, innovation capability fully mediates the relationship between both transformational and transactional leadership styles and green procurement. Our findings offer a more advanced understanding of the impact of leadership style on e-procurement and
the role of innovation capability, thereby addressing the crucial questions of how leadership style and innovation
capability can enhance green procurement to improve environmental sustainability
The Large Hadron–Electron Collider at the HL-LHC
The Large Hadron–Electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy-recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron–proton and proton–proton operations. This report represents an update to the LHeC's conceptual design report (CDR), published in 2012. It comprises new results on the parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, and electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics by extending the accessible kinematic range of lepton–nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to its enhanced luminosity and large energy and the cleanliness of the final hadronic states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, this report contains a detailed updated design for the energy-recovery electron linac (ERL), including a new lattice, magnet and superconducting radio-frequency technology, and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described, and the lower-energy, high-current, three-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented, which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution, and calibration goals that arise from the Higgs and parton-density-function physics programmes. This paper also presents novel results for the Future Circular Collider in electron–hadron (FCC-eh) mode, which utilises the same ERL technology to further extend the reach of DIS to even higher centre-of-mass energies
Remote State Estimation With a Strategic Sensor Using a Stackelberg Game Framework
This article studies how to design the encoder and decoder in the context of dynamic remote state estimation with a strategic sensor. The cost of the remote estimator is the estimation error covariance, whereas the cost of the self-interested strategic sensor includes an additional term related to its private information. A Stackelberg game is employed to model the interaction between the strategic sensor and the remote estimator, where the leader (strategic sensor) first designs the encoder, and the follower (remote estimator) then determines the decoder. We derive the optimal encoder and decoder based on the mismatched cost functions, and characterize the equilibrium for some special cases. One interesting result is that the equilibrium can be achieved by transmitting nothing under certain conditions. The main results are illustrated by numerical examples

This paper is conceived as a response of the authors of the monograph Domestic Judicial Treatment of the European Court of Human Rights Case Law: Beyond Compliance (KOSAŘ, D. et al. Routledge, 2020) to the reactions of the commentators in this symposium. We summarize the starting points of the monograph and develop some of the arguments contained in the book with regard to the comments of the commentators. The article reflects the remarks and key points raised by the commentators: in the first part, it is devoted to a more precise explanation of the methodological foundations of our approach to judicial treatment of the case law of the ECtHR, in the second part it considers in more depth how the comments of the commentators could be integrated, and then it opens a discussion on how to proceed in the research of the internal life of the ECHR and the case law of the ECtHR
Biodiesel from fish waste oil: synthesis via supercritical methanol and thermodynamic optimization
This study evaluates the potential of local fish waste oil as a feedstock for biodiesel via supercritical methanol
transesterification (SCMT). Hexane was used as a cosolvent and the transesterification reaction was carried
out in a continuous reactor under supercritical conditions. The response surface methodology (RSM) method
was applied to analyse the effect of four independent variables, including the weight ratio of methanol to
fish-waste oil (W), the reaction temperature (T), the pressure (P) and the feed flow rate (F), on the yield of the
biodiesel production in supercritical methanol. According to the calculated optimal operating condition for the
RSM, the values of W (22.3 weight ratio of methanol to fish waste oil), T (270°C), P (112.7 bar) and F (2.0 mL min–1)
were achieved. Under the optimum conditions, the highest yield was estimated to be 94.6% (g/g). The obtained
yield was found to be close to the theoretical yield (95.2%). This value suggests that the proposed strategy has a promising potential in the production of biodiesel fuel
‘Disturbed’ by Euclid: Thomas Fincke and the reading of Ramist mathematics in sixteenth-century Germany
This article presents evidence of the transmission and reception of Petrus Ramus’s mathematical pedagogy, as witnessed in a multi-volume Sammelband constructed and used in late sixteenth-century Germany. It considers how the methodological influence of Ramus was transmitted to students by the mathematical work of Thomas Fincke, before suggesting that idiosyncratic users of the
Sammelband tangled with authoritative interpretations of Euclid by incorporating their own reading and notational practices. Whilst Fincke’s work was aimed toward students familiar with Ramist teaching, marginalia found within the Sammelband reinterpret these intentions, demonstrating the pedagogical relationships shared between Fincke, his predecessors, and the later readers of the volume
