Underwater double vortex generation using 3D printed acoustic lens and field multiplexing

    Get PDF
The generation of acoustic vortex beams has attracted an increasing amount of research attention in recent years, offering a range of functions, including acoustic communication, particle manipulation, and biomedical ultrasound. However, incorporating more vortices and broadening the capacity of these beams and associated devices in three dimensions pose challenges. Traditional methods often necessitate complex transducer arrays and are constrained by conditions such as system complexity and the medium in which they operate. In this paper, a 3D printed acoustic lens capable of generating a double vortex pattern with an optional focusing profile in water was demonstrated. The performance of the proposed lens was evaluated through computational simulations using finite element analysis and experimental tests based on underwater measurements. The results indicate that by altering the positioning of the vortices’ axes, it is possible to control both the intensity and the location of the pressurized zone. The proposed approach shows promise for enhancing the effectiveness and versatility of various applications by generating a larger number of vortices and freely tailoring the focal profile with a single lens, thereby expanding the practical uses of acoustic vortex technology

Identifying V. Cholerae\u27s Autoinducer to Manipulate Its Quorum Sensing

    Get PDF
    • Vibrio cholerae is a gram-negative anaerobic bacteria that inhabits brackish or saltwater areas. • Causative agent of cholera, which results in acute diarrhea and dehydration. • Uses quorum sensing, a cell density dependent method of communicating with other bacteria and regulating its entire lifecycle of infection. (gene expression of functions such as biofilm formation, virulence, and more) • Vibrio cholerae determines bacterial population based on the secretion of several signaling molecules called an autoinducer from others of their kind. • Upon adequate accumulation, they can deactivate their virulence and begin to leave their host’s body to continue infecting other organisms. •The goal of this experiment is to identify the structure of and isolate one of the autoinducer molecules. Current studies suggest there are four chemical inputs in V. cholerae, two are known (Ea-CAI1/CAI-1 circuit and the AI-2 circuit)

Enhancing the Antibiotic Properties of Meropenem with Hydrophobic Ion-Pairing

    Get PDF
Antibiotic Resistance is one of the most urgent global threat to humankind. Most antibiotics are hydrophilic in nature while proteins and peptides are lipophilic. Enhancing lipophilicity of the antibiotic by HIP can increase solubility of the drugs in human and improve antibacterial effect as well. We hypothesized that formation of a hydrophobic drug complex would change the physical properties of the antibiotic and enhance its antimicrobial activity

A survey of barriers and facilitators to the adoption of buprenorphine prescribing after implementation of a New Jersey-wide incentivized DATA-2000 waiver training program.

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Opioid-involved overdose deaths continue to rise in the US, despite availability of highly effective treatments for opioid use disorder (OUD), in part due to the insufficient number of treatment providers. Barriers include the need for providers to gain expertise and confidence in providing MOUD to their patients who need these treatments. To mitigate this barrier, New Jersey sponsored a buprenorphine training program with financial incentives for participation, which met the then existing requirement for the DATA-2000 waiver. In a 2019 follow-up survey, participants reported on barriers and facilitators to subsequent buprenorphine prescribing. METHODS: Participants in the training program completed a 10-min electronic survey distributed via email. The survey addressed demographics, practice characteristics, current buprenorphine prescribing, and barriers and facilitators to adoption and/or scale up of buprenorphine prescribing. RESULTS: Of the 440 attendees with a valid email address, 91 individuals completed the survey for a response rate of 20.6%. Of the 91 respondents, 89 were eligible prescribers and included in the final analysis. Respondents were predominantly female (n = 55, 59.6%) and physicians (n = 55, 61.8%); representing a broad range of specialties and practice sites. 65 (73%) of respondents completed the training and DEA-registration, but only 31 (34.8%) were actively prescribing buprenorphine. The most frequently cited barriers to buprenorphine prescribing were lack of access to support services such as specialists in addiction, behavioral health services, and psychiatry. The most frequently reported potential facilitators were integrated systems with direct access to addiction specialists and psychosocial services, easier referral to behavioral health services, more institutional support, and improved guidance on clinical practice standards for OUD treatment. CONCLUSION: More than half (52.3%) of those who completed incentivized training and DEA registration failed to actively prescribe buprenorphine. Results highlight provider perceptions of inadequate availability of support for the complex needs of patients with OUD and suggest that broader adoption of buprenorphine prescribing will require scaling up support to clinicians, including increased availability of specialized addiction and mental health services

    Get PDF
Healthcare students are under stress and can use different methods to cope with it. Mindfulness techniques such as guided meditation has been used as a way of helping these students reduce their stress levels. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether guided meditation has an effect on student doctors that translates into more positive interactions with patients. This study found that the student doctors who completed guided meditation felt less frustrated and less impatient while interacting with patients than student doctors who did not perform the guided meditation. Future studies on this topic should recruit more participants so the results could be statistically significant

    Get PDF
Sexual health is an integral piece of human vitality, encompassing a multitude of psychological & physiological factors. There has been an unprecedented amount of interest surrounding cannabis and its impact on sexual function in the past decade. The interplay between the acceptance of cannabis and its widespread use presents the need for research into the correlation between cannabis and sexual health outcomes. The primary components of cannabis, cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) have attracted scrutiny for their potential effects on sexual function. Anecdotal accounts suggest heightened sexual desire and pleasure, however there are conflicting reports raising concerns regarding performance issues and libido. The endocannabinoid system is a pivotal regulator of key physiological processes including sexual function and remains a key focus of inquiry. Understanding the intricate interactions between cannabinoids and this system remains key for unearthing the mechanisms of observed effects. Variables such as frequency of use, dosage, and duration of consumption present significant factors to be expanded upon regarding the relationship between cannabis use and sexual dysfunction. This review aims to unite contemporary research findings and offer novel insights into the nuanced interplay between cannabis consumption and sexual health

Standardization of Discharge Instructions for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury/Concussion in Children Presenting to ED: A QI Project

    Get PDF
Background: Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) or concussions account for high rates of emergency department (ED) visits. Concussion diagnoses are used less often in young children leading to a variability in parental education and discharge instructions. Lack of discharge guidance may increase parental anxiety, impact recovery, and increase ED visits. Objectives: To increase the proportion of ED patients discharged with age-appropriate instructions for mTBI by 50% by June 1, 2024, and to determine the impact age-appropriate instructions have on decreasing parental anxiety. Methods: This observational time series with planned sequential experimentation is in progress at a Pediatric ED affiliated with an urban academic medical center from October 2022- June 2024. All pediatric ED patients aged 0-18 years with mTBI or concussion associated ICD-10 codes were included. An interdisciplinary team including ED faculty, pediatric neurology, nursing, clinical informatics, and QI specialist developed the key driver diagram. Interventions derived from tertiary drivers included ED staff education and creation of an electronic medical record (EMR) smart phrase of standardized discharge instructions for mTBI or concussion for children ages 0-5 years and ≥ 6 years based on CDC guidelines and expert consensus. Data were collected via EMR review. Our process measures included percentage of patients who received discharge instructions with 1) head injury specific precautions, 2) cognitive and 3) physical limitations, age-appropriate instructions related to 4) cognitive and 5) physical limitations and 6) clinical diagnosis of concussion. Our balancing measures include head CT utilization. Data were displayed and analyzed using statistical process control “P” charts and API rules were applied to detect special cause variation. Results: In 976 patients, we observed an improvement in the percentage of patients who received age-appropriate instructions for both cognitive and physical limitations from a mean of 79% to 95%, following the implementation of our smart phrases. Parental surveys during Feb – Mar 2024 indicated 63% of parents found discharge instructions were very helpful in alleviating their stress and 80% of parents found age-appropriate discharge instructions very helpful while watching over their child in their recovery period. There was no increase in head CT utilization. Conclusions: Creating age-appropriate standardized EMR discharge smart phrases for physical and cognitive recovery led to increased incorporation of these discharge instructions from the Pediatric ED. Parental surveys provided feedback and illustrated the impact of age-appropriate discharge instructions on parents/guardians caring for children during recovery from mTBI or concussions. Disparities in the use of smart phrase across racial/ethnic populations will be further investigated and incorporated into educational curriculum

    Get PDF
Enrollment in higher education has increased over recent years with more students entering college underprepared for the academic rigor. Through expanded access, more minoritized students who are Pell eligible are enrolling. To retain these and other students, higher education institutions are implementing high impact practices to provide additional support. One such strategy is through the implementation of college success courses. These courses are intended to provide an extra layer of support for students as they make the transition from high school to college. Using a qualitative, case study approach, I used semi-structured interviews which included a photo-elicitation component to explore the experiences of minoritized, Pell eligible students in a college success course at Suburban University. Three themes emerged from the semi-structured interviews including the importance of faculty, learning about resources, and self-motivation. During the photo-elicitation portion of the interviews, the importance of relationships was a reoccurring theme. Implications for future research and practice are discussed
