Neural Self-Management: An Autonomous Framework for Continual Learning through Uncertainty Quantification
In the highly dynamic environments of the real world, it is unreasonable to assume data seen during deployment will mimic the training distribution when designing Deep Neural Networks (DNNs). Without the ability to adapt to new information after deployment, DNNs frequently required costly retraining and redeployment. In this work, we develop multiple Continual Learning frameworks to prevent catastrophic forgetting by leveraging a probabilistic deep learning framework called Moment Propagation (MP). Properties of the MP are explored, including: its ability to compress network representations, identify important parameters to current network representation, and detect of out-of-distribution data samples with respect to the network\u27s training distribution using predictive variance. These concepts are leveraged in a continual learning setting to mitigate catastrophic forgetting over a sequence of tasks. Catastrophic forgetting mitigation is achieved in a task incremental learning with five different parameter regularization-based methodologies, each regularizing network parameters in different ways. Each approach is evaluated on multiple benchmark datasets and compared to existing methods. The ability to determine when to adapt to new information during inference, modeled by untrained task data, is demonstrated with our fourth method presented, Uncertainty-based Feature Masking. Finally, the ability to significantly mitigate catastrophic forgetting in a class incremental learning setting, where task information is not provided during inference, is demonstrated with our final method presented, Dynamic Neural Architecture
Leveraging Your Identity In Medical School Applications and As A Medical Student
Many first-generation students are apprehensive about how they are perceived in the application process and during their training period as future physicians, and receive less guidance from their community. Historically, physicians have come from certain backgrounds, so students from other cultures are often concerned about fitting in. However, we would like to share how we have identified specific opportunities to contribute our perspectives as medical students and in academic and national leadership, and how this has proved useful for our careers, such as Anudeep\u27s founding of a diversity, equity, and inclusion conference at the Stratford campus. We also hope to provide individualized guidance to attendees as to how they can pursue similar projects themselves

THE JOURNEY TOWARD ASCENSION: UNDERSTANDING THE NARRATIVES OF LATINX WOMEN IN K-12 SCHOOL PRINCIPALSHIP
This study explored the unique leadership journeys of Latinx women holding principal positions in K-12 schools across New Jersey. The research findings revealed that these women\u27s career paths were significantly influenced by their social identity characteristics, specifically as female Latinx individuals. The study serves as a crucial reminder to challenge and eliminate negative perceptions and biases towards Latina school principals and their leadership growth and methodologies. The study focused on the leadership journeys of Latinx women holding principal positions in K-12 schools in New Jersey. The findings also showed that their career paths were aided by their social identity characteristics as female Latinx individuals. This research serves as a wake-up call to eradicate negative perceptions around the leadership of Latina school principals. This study challenges the negative portrayal of Latinx women in leadership positions. It explores how cultural values and social identities shape their experiences. The study’s findings reveal that Latinx women principals’ success is facilitated by their bilingualism, family values, and the desire to inspire others. This research aims to eliminate the deficit mindset about Latina school principals and promote inclusive leadership practices. The research questions for this study are: (1)How do Latinx women describe their experiences ascending into school leadership positions? (2) How do cultural values influence these Latina school principals\u27 leadership? (3) How do their intersecting identities shape Latinx women\u27s leadership experiences
TRAJECTORIES OF DEPRESSION SEVERITY IN THE FIRST SEMESTER OF COLLEGE
Depression is a major public health concern among students in higher education. Prior work suggests that depressive symptoms increase during the transition to college. Transfer students face unique challenges during the transition to a new academic institution that may make them particularly vulnerable. There is a critical need to expand prevention efforts. Research that improves identification of students at greatest risk for developing impairing depressive symptoms, and etiological processes contributing to depressive symptoms could aid in the provision of limited prevention resources. Furthermore, longitudinal research tracking symptom trajectories during the transition to college could help inform the timing of preventive interventions for new students. We propose to conduct secondary data analysis from a prospective cohort study designed to model mental health symptoms among first-year students and incoming transfer students during their first semester at a large university. Our goal is to model the course and predictors of depression severity as captured by measures of depression-related impairment. We propose two hypotheses: (1) depression severity will follow a nonlinear trajectory with increasing severity in the early part of the semester followed by a plateau in symptom change; (2) transfer students will report higher levels of depression severity throughout the semester relative to first year students
Cutaneous Ulcerations as the Presenting Sign of Acute Aortic Occlusion
This is a report of a case of acute aortic occlusion (AAO) in a 46-year-old woman who presented with confluent and coalescing punched-out ulcerations on the bilateral medial buttocks and abdominal ulcerations. This case highlights how AAO, although rare, should be considered in patients with cardiovascular risk factors presenting with acute lower extremity pain and new-onset cutaneous ulcerations of the perineum and/or abdomen
Transcranial Electrical Stimulation as a Treatment for Aging-Related Cognitive Disorders: Review of Published Evidence
Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD) and MCI are a major concern in modern neuropsychiatric care, chiefly for their difficult management. This strategic literature review categorizes MCI via the Jak-Bondi criteria and relates it to tES treatment paradigms. Commonly used outcome measures and regional brain mapping data synergizes associations between MCI pathology and potential tES treatment targets. Effect sizes were calculated and attributed to outcome measures based on primary articles evaluating the efficacy of tES. These were then corresponded to a desired Jack-Bondi classification. A better understanding of the efficacy of tES on specific brain regions in synergy with diagnostic criteria will allow for standardization of treatment across all individuals impacted by MCI and Alzheimer’s pathology. This review suggests tES is ready to be brought out of an experimental phase, and can be used to guide new standards of care in the MCI patient population
The Impact of Traumatic Brain Injury on Noradrenergic Innervation of the Prefrontal Cortex
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a common cause of death and disability in the United States, and it can occur due to varied reasons including motor vehicle accidents, gunshot wounds, and falls. Following TBIs, patients are often left with lifelong disabilities and cognitive problems that can lead to increased risk-taking behaviors. The main goal of my research was to understand the neural mechanisms that drive increased risk-taking behaviors due to TBIs. The specific areas of the brain I was interested in looking at were the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), and/or anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) of the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Higher order executive functions that guide complex decision-making are regulated by the PFC and are most often impacted by TBIs. During my summer research fellowship, I studied noradrenergic innervation of the OFC by performing a fiber analysis study. In order to do this, my plan was to investigate the relative density of Dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH) fibers and norepinephrine transporter fibers (NET) within the OFC at week 1 versus week 4 post-experimental repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) or sham surgery of adult male and female Long Evans rats (n=4/group, 4 groups)
