    UTILIZING CULTURAL RESPONSIVE LITERACY PRACTICES IN ORDER TO INCREASE READING ENGAGEMENT IN PRIMARY AGED READERS

    The purpose of this conceptual research was to explore how culturally responsive literacy practices and various theoretical frameworks can be integrated to enhance reading engagement among primary-aged readers. This study examines the connections among several relevant theoretical frameworks and identifies common themes related to reading engagement. The theories that guided this research include Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT), Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy (CSP), Funds of Knowledge (FoK), Self-Efficacy, and Self-Determination Theory (SDT). The conceptual framework highlights common themes across these frameworks, such as the importance of professional development and pre-service teacher programs, the significance of recognizing student strengths and backgrounds, and the need for learner autonomy. It emphasizes the roles of cultural context, personal belief in capabilities, the application of existing knowledge, and intrinsic motivation. Additionally, this research addresses the missed opportunities presented by traditional reading logs and discusses alternative approaches to enhance reading engagement

    Lecture Capture, Transcripts, and Captioning in US Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine: Descriptive Cross-Sectional Survey

    This study describes lecture capture, transcription, and captioning services at US Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (COMs). An anonymous online survey was sent to Deans or Directors of Curriculum at all 34 fully accredited COMs, with 21 (62%) responding. Results showed widespread lecture recording (95%), but of those, there were varied transcript and caption offerings: 7 (33%) provided both, 5 (24%) offered closed captions only, and 3 (14%) offered transcripts only. Overall, 71% offered at least one service. These findings indicate the prevalence of these lecture services at US COMs and will assist COMs in benchmarking their practices

    Novel High-Strength and High-Temperature Resistant Composite Material for In-Space Optical Mining Applications: Modeling, Design, and Simulation at the Polymer and Atomic/Molecular Levels.

    This study explores the modeling, design, simulation, and testing of a new composite material designed for high-strength and high-temperature resistance in in-space optical mining, examining its properties at both the polymer and atomic/molecular levels. At the polymer level, the investigation includes mechanical and thermal performance analyses using COMSOL Multiphysics 6.1, employing layerwise theory, equivalent single layer (ESL) theory, and a multiple-model approach for mechanical modeling, alongside virtual thermal experiments simulating laser heating. Experimentally, porous Polyaniline (PANI) films are fabricated via electrochemical polymerization, with variations in voltage and deposition time, to study their morphology, optical performance, and electrochemical behavior. At the atomic and molecular levels, this study involves modeling the composite material, composed of Nomex, Kevlar, and Spirooxazine-Doped PANI, and simulating its behavior. The significance of this work lies in developing a novel composite material for in-space optical mining, integrating it into optical mining systems, and introducing innovative thermal management solutions, which contribute to future space exploration by improving resource efficiency and sustainability, while also enhancing the understanding of PANI film properties for in-space applications

    Pediatric Cardiac Xenotransplantation and Expanded Access: Ethical Considerations

    Due to the current organ shortage waitlist, alternatives to allotransplantation are necessary. Xenotransplantation is currently being pursued as one such alternative in adults in need of kidney or heart transplantation. Cardiac xenotransplantation of genetically modified pig hearts has been conducted twice in adults under the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expanded access criteria. Because of the shortage of transplantable hearts for children as well as the lack of mechanical circulatory support in this population, pediatric researchers are exploring FDA expanded access in high-risk neonates and infants who lack alternative options for survival. The adult cardiac xenotransplantation experience with expanded access can provide lessons and highlight nuances for researchers preparing pediatric application. This includes aspects of informed consent, biosurveillance, and protection of bystanders from potential xenozoonoses

    Accelerated 3YMD programs: the last decade of growth of the Consortium of Accelerated Medical Pathway Programs (CAMPP).

    INTRODUCTION: Over the past decade, the growth of accelerated three-year MD (3YMD) programs has flourished. In 2015, with support from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, the Consortium of Medical Pathway Programs (CAMPP) started with eight North American medical schools. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the current state of the 3YMD programs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Since 2015, the CAMPP has tracked new and prospective 3YMD programs. An electronic survey collecting curricular and programmatic information about the programs was disseminated to all members of the CAMPP in August 2023. The survey included elements related to year of initiation, number of graduates, and curricular elements. RESULTS: Of the schools with known established three-year MD programs, 29 of 32 programs responded (response rate 90%). There is growth of Accelerated Medical Pathway Programs over time with almost 20% of United States Allopathic Medical Schools having or developing an accelerated program. There have been 817 graduates from these programs from 2013-2023. Most schools include an opportunity for a \u27directed pathway\u27 experience for students. A directed pathway is where a student completes the MD degree in three-years and then has a direct placement into an affiliated residency program, provided they meet the goals and objectives of the curriculum. Most of the schools report a mission to reduce medical student debt and build a workforce for a specialty, for a population of patients, or geographical distribution. CONCLUSIONS: Accelerated three-year medical pathway programs have grown significantly over the last decade, consistent with an overall effort to redesign medical curricula, reduce debt and contribute to the workforce

    In this age of technology with its concerns for efficiency and resources the practice of medicine and the relationship between doctors and patients is under assault. Using the doctor-patient relationship as a model to address this concern the author claims that making a personal connection between doctors and patients at the level of their shared humanity produces synchronous beneficial results. Further, this personal connection can facilitate magic, an experience where a specialized type of language and listening allow for unpredictable and unexpected results

    A Novel Approach to HIV Testing: Group Harm Reduction and Testing for High Risk Women in NJ

    Outreach programs have been implemented aimed at providing healthcare to minority populations and those considered high-risk for acquiring HIV. Variables such as these cause hesitance in community members, preventing HIV screenings and adherence to follow-ups. This study provides and evaluates a new approach: group HIV testing. Data was collected from 6/2/2023 to 4/19/2024 by surveying participants at the end of the interaction. 87.5% of participants rated their care at the mobile clinic as ‘Excellent’, 8% as ‘Very Good’, and 4.5% as ‘Good’. 95.6% of participants ranked Group Harm Reduction Counseling as ‘Definitely’ helpful. 84.4% of participants did not find that group harm reduction counseling made them feel like they had less privacy. Our research showed that the majority of participants found group harm-reduction counseling beneficial and said it helped decrease anxiety associated with testing. While some patients still find one-on-one testing to be more comfortable, finding ways to incorporate and/or offer different methods of harm reduction counseling and HIV testing may be beneficial for the retention of care, HIV education, and connecting individuals with HIV to healthcare

    Challenges in Paediatric Xenotransplantation: Ethical Components Requiring Distinct Attention in Children and Obligations to Patients and Society

    The transplantation of non-human organs into humans, or xenotransplantation (XTx), has recently garnered new attention and is being developed to help address the problem of organ scarcity in transplantation. Ethical issues surrounding XTx have been studied since initial interest arose decades ago and have experienced renewed discussion in the literature. However, the distinct and relevant differences when applied to children has largely been overlooked with few groups attending to the concerns that XTx in children raises. In this paper, we explore ethical challenges to be expected in paediatric XTx, in particular exploring organ sizing concerns, infectious risks, psychological burdens, and issues of moral hazard. We review these domains with the aim of highlighting the implications of pursuing paediatric XTx and the cross-disciplinary approach needed to solve these issues. Children require a unique analysis from a bioethical perspective to best prepare for the issues XTx presents
