Using Efficacious Content Area Literacy Practices to Support Student Improvement and Perception of Self-Efficacy
This thesis examines how students’ self-efficacy, confidence, and motivation change when students use content area literacy practices in math. This study was guided by the affective theories of Bandura, Maslow, and Guthrie & Wigfield. This study used qualitative research, focusing on collecting data through anecdotal evidence, student self-evaluation surveys, student journal responses, and a teacher research journal. Throughout the six week study, students participated in lessons focused on improving self-efficacy, confidence and motivation. Additionally, students learned to make connections between math and literacy through math literacy tasks, such as numberless word problems. Following the study, data was analyzed through triangulation and patterns were determined. The data collected and analyzed suggest that using math literacy practices with primary aged students improved their perceptions of their own self-efficacy. At the conclusion of the study, students had a better understanding of self-efficacy and their own feelings about their abilities to use math literacy skills. This study is relevant to elementary school teachers because it provides insight to help teachers make connections between literacy and other subjects for primary aged students
Unveiling the Potential: The Role of AI-Enhanced ECG in Cardiovascular Disease Detection
Background: The Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a widely utilized, non-invasive, cost-effective cardiac test. Its integration with Artificial Intelligence (AI) has empowered it to become a potent screening tool and a predictor for various cardiovascular diseases, especially in asymptomatic individuals. Objective: This review investigates the utility of AI-powered ECG in early detection of cardiac conditions, focusing on conditions such as low ejection fraction (LEF), atrial fibrillation (AF), aortic valve stenosis (AVS), and cardiac amyloidosis (CA). Methods: A literature review spanning 2018 to 2024 was conducted, analyzing 10 articles - 3 on AF, 3 on AVS, 3 on LEF, and 1 on CA - meeting inclusion criteria of randomized control trials and clinical trials. Results: The results show the significant improvements in LEF diagnosis, increased AF and AVS detection, and accurate prediction of CA presence by AI-powered ECG. Conclusion: This review underscores the transformative potential of AI-powered ECGs in reshaping cardiovascular disease detection and management, emphasizing the need for ethical practices, and technological advancements
The Efficacy of Baricitinib as a Treatment Option for Alopecia, In Terms of Promoting Hair Regrowth and Improving Patient Reported Outcomes
Background: Alopecia, an autoimmune condition characterized by hair loss, significantly impacts millions globally, often leading to psychological distress such as anxiety and depression. Current treatments are variably effective and frequently associated with adverse effects that restrict long-term use. This study evaluates the efficacy of Baricitinib, a Janus Kinase inhibitor, in treating severe alopecia, focusing on hair regrowth and patient-reported outcomes.
Methods: This research synthesized data from recent publications (2018-2023) including clinical trials, reviews, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews, sourced from databases such as PubMed, Springer, and Elsevier. The inclusion criteria focused on recent studies in English evaluating Baricitinib\u27s effectiveness in severe alopecia cases. The primary outcome measures were the extent of hair regrowth and the change in patient-reported outcomes.
Results: The analysis included results from the BRAVE-AA1 and BRAVE-AA2 trials, which showed significant hair regrowth in patients as evidenced by improved Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) scores. Notably, patients treated with baricitinib demonstrated a marked percent change in SALT scores and a higher proportion achieving an absolute SALT score of ≤10 within 36 weeks compared to the placebo. The treatment was well-tolerated with minimal adverse effects reported.
Conclusion: Baricitinib has shown promising results in promoting significant hair regrowth in patients with severe alopecia, with minimal side effects, making it a viable treatment option. The FDA has approved Baricitinib for this indication. However, further research is necessary to evaluate the long-term safety of Baricitinib and to confirm these findings in a larger cohort

Opiate overdose is an unfortunately common risk factor for suicide; suicide attempts accounted for an estimated 30% of fatal opioid overdoses during the pandemic. As a result, the Rowan School of Osteopathic Medicine Department of Psychiatry developed an Integrated Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention program targeted at members of the community and frontline workers to increase awareness and provide brief interventions, which demonstrated an improvement of 89% in our English-speaking attendees.
Spanish is the most common non-English language in New Jersey, with an estimated 1.3 million speakers. Hispanic patients also frequently experience culturally bound stigmas, so it is vital to ensure content is appropriately targeted for maximum impact. In this poster, we showcase some examples of translated and targeted content, and detail several terms that differ between regional variations of country-specific Spanish, which are commonly spoken in New Jersey. Attention to matching variant terms and the use of local terminology for culturally specific syndromes can increase effectiveness of patient education programs in underserved populations. The use of qualified human medical translators proficient in the specific variant spoken by patients or provider-patient concordance also minimizes misunderstanding and may improve rapport

The Role of Med13 in Proteaphagy
Regulation of proteasomes is important for adaptation to cellular stress. Previous studies have shown that following starvation stress, proteasomes are targeted for destruction by autophagy. However, how cells control proteasomes in response to nitrogen starvation remains unclear. This study delves into the intricate interplay between Med13, proteaphagy, and stress response regulation, aiming to elucidate their roles in cellular survival mechanisms. It focused on the highly conserved Cdk8 kinase module (CKM) of the Mediator complex a that plays a pivotal involvement in cellular signaling and gene regulation under stress conditions. During the investigation, we asked if the degradation of specific proteasome subunits was dependent upon Med13, a member of the CKM. The results suggest a novel role of Med13 in the degradation of the Rpn8 proteasome subunit, shedding light on its specific impact on proteasome dynamics during stress. Moving forward, the research endeavors to validate and refine these initial findings through further experimentation and analysis. Replication of experiments and additional time courses, particularly focusing on the Rpn11 subunit, are planned to bolster the observed effects of Med13 on specific proteasome subunits. Furthermore, the exploration of Med13\u27s involvement in proteaphagy under different stress conditions, such as carbon starvation, promises to broaden our understanding of stress-induced cellular responses. In conclusion, this research underscores the critical role of Med13 in cellular survival mechanisms during nitrogen starvation and its potential implication in proteasome degradation. These findings contribute significantly to the comprehension of stress response regulation and hold promise for future investigations into proteaphagy and related cellular processes
Blueberry Drone AI: Smart Farming of Blueberries using Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Drones
This project seeks to assist blueberry growers in New Jersey with preventing blueberry scorch disease. Plants can’t be cured of scorch, so they have to be removed to prevent the disease from spreading to other bushes. This project aims to use object detection and classifier machine learning models in order to detect scorch disease with photos from intelligent drones. Images are first tiled, then processed through and convolutional neural network that detects scorch symptoms. Lastly, a fully connected neural network is implemented to make a final prediction
SGD-OD: investigating the potential oxygen demand of submarine groundwater discharge in coastal systems.
Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) supplies nutrients, carbon, metals, and radionuclide tracers to estuarine and coastal waters. One aspect of SGD that is poorly recognized is its direct effect on dissolved oxygen (DO) demand in receiving waters, denoted here as SGD-OD. Sulfate-mediated oxidation of organic matter in salty coastal aquifers produces numerous reduced byproducts including sulfide, ammonia, dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen, methane, and reduced metals. When these byproducts are introduced to estuarine and coastal systems by SGD and are oxidized, they may substantially reduce the DO concentration in receiving waters and impact organisms living there. We consider six estuarine and coastal sites where SGD derived fluxes of reduced byproducts are well documented. Using data from these sites we present a semiquantitative model to estimate the effect of these byproducts on DO in the receiving waters. Without continued aeration with atmospheric oxygen, the study sites would have experienced periodic hypoxic conditions due to SGD-OD. The presence of
Hybrid Deloading Control Strategy in MMC-Based Wind Energy Conversion Systems for Enhanced Frequency Regulation
The growing integration of renewable energy sources, especially offshore wind (OSW), is introducing frequency stability challenges to electric power grids. This paper presents a novel hybrid deloading control strategy that enables modular multilevel converter (MMC)-based wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) to actively contribute to grid frequency regulation. This research investigates a permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-based direct-drive configuration, sourced from the International Energy Agency’s (IEA’s) 15 MW reference turbine model. Specifically, phase-locked loop (PLL)-free grid-forming (GFM) control is employed via the grid-side converter (GSC), and DC-link voltage control is realized through the machine-side converter (MSC), both of which boost the energy support for the integrated AC grid’s frequency stability. This control strategy combines the benefits of over-speeding and pitch control modes, facilitating smooth transitions between different modes based on real-time wind speed measurements. In addition, the practical challenges of MMCs, such as circulating currents and capacitor voltage imbalances, are addressed. Numerical simulations under varying wind speeds and loading conditions validate the enhanced frequency regulation capability of the proposed approach
The Essence from within: A Phenomenological Study examining the Lived Experiences of Racial and Ethnic Minoritized Women (RAEMW) Senior Level Administrators at 4-year Predominately White Institutions (PWIS) in the United States (U.S.)
The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of senior level RAEMW administrators who work at 4-year PWIs in the U.S. and analyze the impact of institutional environments on their success. The theories that guided this study were: Crenshaw’s (1994; 1989; 2015) intersectionality framework and four tenets of CRT which include counter-storytelling, the permanence of racism, interest convergence, and intersectionality (Hiraldo, 2010, 2019). This study was guided by the three research questions: 1) How do RAEMW senior level administrators describe their experiences navigating higher education, 2) How do senior level RAEMW administrators describe the impact of institutional environments on their career advancement in higher education, and 3) How can intersectionality, counter-storytelling, the permanence of racism, and interest convergence inform research on RAEMW’s experiences as senior level administrators? Seven senior level RAEMW administrators participated in the study. Data was collected through virtual interviews and the data analysis procedures were conducted using Moustakas’ (1994) modified Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method. Three themes emerged that captured their lived experiences as RAEMW senior level administrators: 1) The Power of Identity, 2) Daily Indignities as Barrier to Advancement, and 3) Communities of support and Success Strategies that promote Boundary Setting
