MIRROR MIRROR ON THE SCREEN SHOW THE ME THAT I WANT SEEN: NAVIGATING DIGITAL INFLUENCES ON IDENTITY CONSTRUCTION: A QUALITATIVE CASE STUDY
This qualitative case study explores how information messages, on and offline, influence the identity construction of young adult learners using a self-authorship frame at County Community College (CCC). Self-authorship is the construction of beliefs, values, and identities based on a personally defined internal process rather than reliance on external formulas for meaning (Baxter Magolda, 2023). Data collection and analysis included semi-structured interview transcriptions from eighteen students aged 18-24. The findings revealed the dynamic interplay between traditional values and online ideals, highlighting the challenges of influence and dissonance in the identity journey. The study\u27s findings call on educators and policymakers to add media and information literacy (MIL) to all levels of education in the digital age. Like self-authorship, MIL involves critically evaluating and understanding external messages before internalizing information as fact
A NOVEL APPROACH TO EVALUATE SEATBELT NON-COMPLIANCE OF DRIVERS IN NEW JERSEY
This study intends to investigate the non-compliant behavior of drivers with seatbelt use in New Jersey. By examining various factors such as temporal and roadway characteristics, this study seeks to identify the underlying causes of this seatbelt non-compliance behavior. To overcome the limitations of traditional methods like cross-sectional data collection, a novel approach known as moving vehicle method was employed. To gain further insights, hypothesis tests were performed across the entire dataset to pinpoint significant temporal, roadway, and geometric factors contributing to non-compliant behaviors. In the subsequent step, the association of other risky behaviors like speeding and distracted driving with seatbelt non-compliance behavior was further analyzed. In addition, an advanced seatbelt compliance and non-compliance detection tool was developed utilizing a deep learning algorithm to assist policymakers, engineers, law enforcement departments and researchers in identifying non-compliant motorists, thereby enhancing their ability to enforce seatbelt regulations effectively. The analysis revealed that drivers are significantly more non-compliant during weekends on faster (54 mph or more) and multilane (e.g. more or four) roadways
BIOLUMINESENCE-INDUCED PHOTOREDOX CATALYSIS AND ITS MECHANISMS
The bioluminescence-induced photoredox reaction (BIPR) is a novel methodology developed to overcome the limitations of photo-induced chemistry by initiating chemical work using bioluminescent Escherichia coli as a photon source. In industry, photochemistry is superseded by thermochemical reaction processes. Despite its massive potential, there are very few applications in industry for photochemistry. Unlike thermochemistry, reaction scale-ups are not as easy as simple dimensional increases in a reaction vessel due to the nature of light. This deficiency is seemingly overcome through the development of flow technologies; however, the overall yield of such methods remains incomparable with those utilizing thermochemistry. This thesis focuses on a reaction method we have developed to fulfill the requirements for an environmentally friendly, feasible reaction process that could potentially be scaled up in industry. Insights from the data collected provide a deeper understanding of the limitations, strengths, and forces that drive photochemistry that have been achieved via the proposed methodology described therein
Electrochromic Polymers: From Electrodeposition to Hybrid Solid Devices
This paper reports on the linear colorimetric and electrochromic (EC) characteristics of electrodeposited polyaniline (PANI) films. This paper also investigates the infrared EC properties of acid-doped PANI films. The electrochemical polymerization method was employed to create a porous and thin PANI film layer onto PET-ITO substrates. This layer was capped with WO3 film to create a gel electrolyte sandwich structure that demonstrates the compatibility of PANI films with cathodic WO3 films in full devices. The electrodeposition of the film was fabricated by applying different voltages and time, with the optimal film quality achieved with the 1.7 V voltage and a 20 min deposition period. The surface morphology, optical performance, electrochemical behavior, and molecular structure evolution are comprehensively studied in this work. The linear colorimetric behaviors and the corresponding significant changes in the structure in Raman spectra build direct strong quantitative relations in EC polymers. The well-defined oxidation and reduction peaks observed in the cyclic voltammetry indicate the ion-diffusion dominant process in the electrochromism of PANI. Significant transitions between the benzene and quinone phases in the Raman spectra are found in the bleached and colored states of polymers. This study enhances the understanding of PANI film structure and electrochemical and associated optical properties, providing more insights into the dual-function EC charge storage polymers and other energy-related functional materials
DEVELOPMENT OF SALINOMYCIN DERIVATIVES AS POTENTIAL ANTICANCER AGENTS
Salinomycin is a poly-ionophore antibiotic that was originally isolated from Streptomyces albus by Miyazaki and colleagues from Kaken Chemicals Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan. Salinomycin exhibits antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria including Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus flavus, Sarcina lutea, Mycobacterium spp. Some filamentous fungi, Plasmodium falciparum, and Eimeria spp. as well as protozoan parasites responsible for the poultry disease coccidiosis. Hence, it is used in veterinary medicine. In 2009 Gupta et al demonstrated that salinomycin selectively killed human breast cancer stem cells (CSCs) with great efficacy, and the mechanism of action of this novel CSCs molecule was explored. To name a few mechanisms of action salinomycin possesses, it interferes with ABC transporters, inhibits the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, inhibits oxidative phosphorylation, disrupts the cytoplasmic and mitochondrial K+ concentration via K+ efflux, and interferes with cancer stem cell differentiation. Based on the knowledge and previous literature of the anti-cancer activity of Salinomycin herein, a series of derivatives of Salinomycin were synthesized in the modification of the C1 carboxylic acid functional group by synthesizing various salinomycin-N, N’- diacylhydrazine, and salinomycin amide derivatives from amine substituted hydrazines, aromatic substituted hydrazines, substituted thiadiazoles, imidazoles, pyridines, and quinolone intermediates. Biological evaluation of these molecules was performed in vitro and in vivo and showed promising anti-cancer activity with two lead compounds identified with thiadiazole pharmacophores (SAL-032 and SAL-034). Salinomycin was also derivatized at the C20 position to synthesize ironomycin and derivatization of the thiadiazole analogs (SAL-032 and SAL-034) was performed with an oxidation of the C20 alcohol, followed by amination yielding the respective ironomycin derivatives (IRO-032 and IRO-034). C20-ironomycin triazole conjugates were synthesized employing the synthesis of ironomycin, Baylis-Hilman azido-cinnamamides, and Click Chemistry. Creating Community: First-Gen Sense of Belonging
First-generation college students are the first in their families to pursue higher education degrees, and as such are piloting new undertakings in many respects. Research on a sense of belonging has demonstrated that higher rates of belonging are correlated with greater academic success and graduation outcomes (Gopalan & Brady, 2020). Estimates display first-generation college students, make up around a quarter to one third of total enrollment in post-secondary institutions in the United States, however graduate at a significantly lower rate than the national average. And first-generation college students are a particularly vulnerable population and have been found to have several traits that characterize them as an at-risk population in higher education (Ishitani, 2006). This workshop will examine the research of sense of belonging as it relates to first generation college students and explore the implications and recommendations to increase sense of belonging and ultimately promote persistence, college degree completion and overall well-being

Repetitive negative thinking as a prospective predictor of depression and anxiety symptoms in autistic and non-autistic incoming college students
Background: Improving the understanding and treatment of mental health concerns, including depression and anxiety, are significant priorities for autistic adults (Benevides et al., 2020; Crane et al., 2019; Pellicano et al., 2014). While several theories have been proposed to explain the high prevalence of internalizing symptoms in autistic people, little longitudinal research has been done to investigate potential causal mechanisms. One potentially fruitful area of investigation is to explore how well-known contributors to depression/anxiety in the general population predict and/or moderate the development of internalizing symptoms in autistic individuals. Objectives: The current study investigates the relation of one established risk factor from the general population, repetitive negative thinking (RNT), to internalizing symptoms over the course of college students’ first semester. We will also examine whether this association is moderated by a measure of autistic traits (Social Responsiveness Scale, Second Edition; SRS-2; Constantino & Gruber, 2012) and self-described autism status. Methods: Students were recruited from four northeastern United States universities prior to their first semester at their university (in Fall 2020, Fall 2021, and Fall 2022). Our sample (N=263 total) includes 105 students who either reported a formal autism diagnosis (n=30) or endorsed a history of self and/or others thinking that they may be autistic (n=75), as well as 158 students with no history of autism. Participants completed a baseline survey battery within their first two weeks of starting college, a brief biweekly survey throughout their first semester (up to 24 times across 12 weeks), and an endpoint packet. Cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships of interest were assessed using general linear models and generalized least squares (GLS) regression (Pinheiro & Bates, 2000) with a first-order autoregressive correlation structure (AR1), respectively.
