Against Moralizing Nature: Latin American Romanticism and the Aporias of the Ecocritical Turn

This article argues that the ecocritical turn in literary criticism reproduces the dualisms it seeks to avoid, especially the contradiction between nature and culture. At the same time, ecocriticism risks the veneration of Nature already practiced and promoted within the Romantic tradition in the global epoch of primitive accumulation during the 19th century. To sustain this argument, this article follows three main steps. In the first place, it establishes a characterization of Romanticism\u27s attitude towards Nature, defining it as the literaturization of Nature, following Abrams\u27 notion of supernatural naturalism and Jean Luc-Nancy and Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe\u27s definition of Romanticism as the literaturization of theory. Second, this article delves into the main figures of new materialism and their influence on contemporary literary criticism, including both the fields of Latin American and English literature. Finally, it shows how the foundational fictions from the 19th century represented Nature as a melancholic shelter against the decomposition of the hacienda regime, a representation of divine justice against the empire of money, and a universal expression of racialized harmony against the emergence of the urban multitude. The new veneration of Nature constitutes a late form of Romantic epistemology, producing new forms of humanism and moralizing narratives

    Keith Allen Harward\u27s Wrongful Conviction

Keith Allen Harward served 33 years in prison in Virginia for a rape and murder (The Innocence Project, 2025). The main evidence for his conviction was bite marks found on the rape victim’s legs. Someone broke into a house and murdered a man and raped the man’s wife. The rape victim described the man who had assaulted her, saying he was wearing a sailor’s outfit. A shipyard security guard nearby reported a man in a blood-spattered E-3 sailor’s uniform. Dental records of all E-3s were obtained and tested, and Harward was identified as the assailant (Keith Allen HARWARD v. COMMONWEALTH of Virginia, 1988). Harward was later exonerated by DNA evidence that cleared his name and implicated a man named Jerry Crotty. Throughout his various trials, 6 different forensic dentists testified that Harward’s teeth matched the bite marks on the victim (The Innocence Project, 2025)

    Incrimination of Carlton Lewis

On February 7, 1990, Cheryl Coleman was found dead in her apartment, sexually assaulted and beaten to death with a 2x4 piece of wood. Carlton Lewis became one the of few suspects in the case. Despite providing a statement that he was at his home at the time of the murder and the word of his wife, a suspect named William McKee was interviewed and said he saw Lewis go to a house on the corner of the street with Coleman. After McKee was interviewed, Lewis, who was illiterate at the time, was forced into a false confession by being taken into questioning at midnight, questioned without a lawyer present, and stayed until he finally signed a statement that he did not read nor write. The statement said that he was present while one of the suspects, Brown, had raped Coleman and stood by and watched as Brown murdered her. After McKee was interviewed a second time, he said both Brown and Lewis raped and murdered Coleman in exchange for a reduced sentence of twenty-five years to six years, and Lewis was later arrested for second-degree murder on February 20, 1990

The Medicine From Nature; Finding the Antibacterial Power of Essential Oils

Essential oils are known to have pharmaceutical effects such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticarcinogenic properties. These days, there are various types of essential oils that are commonly used for coughing or to promote good sleep. We prepared 19 different essential oils to find the essential oil that has the most antibiotic properties by putting drops of oil on a soy agar plate with Serratia marcescens. As a result, cinnamon cassia essential oil was most effective, and five of them didn\u27t have antibiotic properties. We also tested with six different types of antibiotics, and as a result, only three of them made a zone; which means they have an antibiotic effect on Serratia marcescens

Sibling Rivals Fighting for the Same Thing

This project ties concepts and dynamics of toxic leadership and how they can be effective and impact relationships through analyzing the behaviors, roles, and actions of Beth and Jamie Dutton. Beth and Jamie Dutton portray toxic leadership through their behaviors, actions, and their relationships with each other and others. Beth Dutton is an authoritative figure whose loyalty runs deep for her family and their ranch; she is assertive, brash, demanding, and her high intelligence and background are impactful for leading effectively to ensure her loved ones and the ranch are protected. Jamie Dutton, on the other hand, embodies a more calculating and politically driven form of toxic leadership. As a trained lawyer, he manipulates legal and political systems to advance his own position while balancing his obligations to the family. His leadership is characterized by insecurity, ambition, and a willingness to betray when necessary, making him both a powerful and unpredictable force. Their rivalry highlights the complexity of toxic leadership—both effective in their own ways, yet destructive to their relationship and those caught in their power struggle

Investigating consumer preferences for laptop computers using Choice-Based Conjoint (CBC) Analysis

This study employs a choice-based joint (CBC) analysis to investigate college students\u27 preferences for laptop computers. Data was collected from 49 students at a university in the Midwestern part of the United States. The authors focused on five attributes: brand, price, screen size, performance, and battery life. The results show that branding, especially Apple, is the most critical factor, indicating strong brand loyalty or perceived quality. Performance and battery life followed as most important and can be affected by high usage. Conversely, the impact of screen size is minimal, suggesting that students are prioritizing portability and functionality over larger displays. The findings provide insights for manufacturers and marketers, highlighting the need to focus on brand reputation, performance efficiency, and battery life to appeal to student consumers. However, the limitations of the study – a small, homogeneous sample from one university – warn against broad generalization. Future studies should expand sample diversity and size to validate these conclusions and explore differences across demographics. This work highlights the value of CBC analysis in understanding consumer trade-offs in technology adoption

In my work, I strive to harmonize the quiet elegance and natural sensibility found i Korean ceramic aesthetics with the bold spirit of individualism, self-reliance, and freedom rooted in American values. I explore this balance through the moon jar—a form I deeply admire for its serene presence and historical symbolism. Though I approach this vessel as an outsider to Korean culture, I engage with it not to claim, but to respond: to reinterpret its quiet imperfection through my own pursuit of balance and control. Rather than constructing the jar from two joined hemispheres, I throw each form as a single, continuous shape, aiming for cohesion and precision. My process diverges from tradition, reflecting my own voice and values while honoring the grace of the original form. Spontaneous, expressive glaze work disrupts the controlled surface, allowing emotion and unpredictability to emerge. It is within this contrast—between reverence and reinterpretation, structure and spontaneity—that I find space for personal expression.https://scholars.fhsu.edu/sacad_art/1118/thumbnail.jp

    No full text
This series of eggs shows the artist\u27s dedication to the animals of the Great Plains region. Cobalt colored slip is used to illustrate various life forms that have important roles in the ecosystem they inhabit such as Earthworms, Painted Turtles, and even Flathead Minnows. Each creature is lovingly painted onto the surface of one of nature\u27s perfect forms. Eggs hold the promise of new life, and their form is used to capture the appreciation the artist has for each creature depicted.https://scholars.fhsu.edu/sacad_art/1048/thumbnail.jp

    Scream Until You\u27re Empty

    No full text
Scream Until You\u27re Empty is an interactive sculptural experience that invites viewers to confront and release their anger by writing down what makes them mad and casting it into the open vessel. This piece speaks to the unspoken, the emotions we suppress, the tension we swallow, the rage that simmers beneath the surface. In a world that often demands composure over honesty, many of us are taught to minimize our frustration, to be palatable, polite, and silent. Some turn to trusted friends to unload the weight. Others carry it, quietly- until it erupts. This work asks: What does it mean to reach that breaking point? What shape does it take? What voice does it have? Frozen in a scream, the face becomes a mirror- a reflection of collective and individual catharsis. As the papers pile up inside, the piece becomes heavier with shared fury, a literal accumulation of our burdens. For artists, Scream Until You\u27re Empty is a study in emotional architecture- in turning psychological weight into visual form, and using community participation as both medium and message. It challenges the boundaries of viewer and maker, demanding vulnerability, honesty, and release. Does the scream ever stop? Or is the act of screaming the beginning of healing? So if you see this, ask yourself, What makes you mad? PM p pop So, please write down what makes you mad and throw it in the jar.https://scholars.fhsu.edu/sacad_art/1038/thumbnail.jp
