OSIRIS-REx spectral analysis of (101955) Bennu by multivariate statistics

The NASA New Frontiers asteroid sample return mission Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) has provided a large amount of data on the asteroid (101955) Bennu, including high-quality spectra obtained by the OSIRIS-REx Visible and InfraRed Spectrometer (OVIRS). Aims. To better constrain the surface properties and compositional variations of Bennu, we studied the visible and near-infrared spectral behavior across the asteroid surface by means of a statistical analysis aiming to distinguish spectrally distinct groups, if present. Methods. We applied the G-mode multivariate statistical analysis to the near-infrared OVIRS spectra to obtain an automatic statistical clustering at different confidence levels. Results. The statistical analysis highlights spectral variations on the surface of Bennu. Five distinct spectral groups are identified at a 2σ confidence level. At a higher confidence level of 3σ, no grouping is observed. Conclusions. The results at a 2σ confidence level distinguish a dominant spectral behavior group (group 1, background) and four small groups showing spectral slope variations, associated with areas with different surface properties. The background group contains most of the analyzed data, which implies a globally homogeneous surface at the spectral and spatial resolution of the data. The small groups with redder spectra are concentrated around the equatorial ridge and are associated with morphological surface features such as specific craters and boulders. No significant variation is detected in the band area or depth of the 2.74 μm band, which is associated with hydrated phyllosilicate content. The spectral slope variations are interpreted as a consequence of different regolith particle sizes, and/or porosity, and/or space weathering, that is, the presence of more or less fresh material. Comic Cons and Libraries: Opportunities for Patron Outreach

This research used quantitative survey methodologies to investigate the library-based behaviors and attitudes of attendees of a large metropolitan comic book convention. The intent is to provide context for librarians interested in patron outreach through comic cons. Results found that comic con attendees are library patrons, and provided clues for other types of outreach to related populations
Value add: A finance case study on how to enhance student learning experience through student managed investment fund and engaged alumni network

Purpose: This paper aims to provide students with a career edge, business students require more than concepts and calculations to be successful in their future career. They require professional skill sets, mentors, relationship guides and as much real industry experience as they can gather before graduation. This study sheds some light on how a small business school (SBS) in a nonprofit private academic institution (NPAI) located in an isolated rural area of the USA has been able to tap its strong alumni relationships to provide mentoring and experiential learning opportunities to students using its student-managed investment funds (SMIFs) as the vehicle. Although this study uses a small, geographically isolated institution, the authors believe that the approach taken by this particular school can be replicated by any academic institution that strives to enhance student learning experience by promoting mentorship and experiential learning. Design/methodology/approach: This study starts with a brief introduction (Section 1) and a short review of literature (Section 2) to highlight the numerous benefits of alumni engagement and student mentorship. Section 2 shows institutional background on the NPAI, the SBS and the SMIF. The major part of the study starts with a discussion on the set of rules to guide in the construction of a student-alumni relationship framework that could be easily modified to the unique characteristics of the institution. Next, the role and responsibility of the investment advisory board (IAB) and its members’ engagement with students are discussed. In the last part of the study, SBS is used as a case study to show how alumni contribute to SBS and enhance students’ experiential learning by contributing as mentor, IAB member, advisors to the FMIF and career mentorship. This study concludes with a discussion on potential areas of conflict and friction for alumni involvement. Findings: This study shows that SBS in a NPAI has been able to tap its strong alumni relationship to provide mentoring and experiential learning opportunities to students using its SMIF as the vehicle. The authors believe that the approach taken by this particular school can be replicated by any academic institution that strives to promote mentorship and experiential learning. Research limitations/implications: This case study is focused on a SBS in a NPAI that has a strong alumni relationship and enough resources to successfully tap on its alumni. It would be interesting to learn how this approach can be used in resource-limited public institutions. Practical implications: As the case study shows, any business school that values experiential learning can rely on its alumni to enhance student learning experience by properly using its alumni resources. Social implications: The results of this study show that business schools’ outreach opportunities and student experiential learning experience can be enhanced and business schools’ academic qualification and ranking, which leads to improvement in student enrollment, can be improved. Overall, the major beneficiary would be the business schools’ immediate and larger community. Originality/value: The authors are positive that multiple universities are properly taking advantage of using their alumni relationship

The most prominent intermolecular interactions in compound I are C - H⋯O hydrogen bonds, which link molecules into a two-dimensional network parallel to the (001) plane and a chain perpendicular to (1 1). Both title compounds II, ethyl 4-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-2,7,7-trimethyl-5-oxo-1,4,5,6,7,8-hexahydroquinoline-3-carboxylate, C23H29NO6, and III, ethyl 4-(anthracen-9-yl)-2,7,7-trimethyl-5-oxo-1,4,5,6,7,8-hexahydroquinoline-3-carboxylate, C29H29NO3, share the same structural features, such as a shallow boat conformation of the dihydropyridine group and an orthogonal aryl group attached to the dihydropyridine. The relationship between trained ratings and untrained listeners’ judgments of global coherence in extended monologues

Background: Global coherence rating scales have been used by a number of researchers to examine spoken discourse in populations with and without acquired neurogenic communication disorders. The 4-point global coherence (GC) scale in the current study has demonstrated reliability and convergent validity. However, we have not yet established how a global coherence rating corresponds to functional communication. Aims: The current study explores the clinical meaningfulness of the 4-point GC rating scale. Survey questions and ratings were developed to examine discourse quality and functional coherence as perceived by untrained listeners. Ratings by untrained listeners were compared to trained discourse ratings using the established 4-point GC scale. Methods and Procedures: Twelve discourse samples, scored by a trained rater, were selected for the current study from a previously collected set of discourse transcripts. Transcripts were extended monologues in response to one of four possible open-ended questions that were re-recorded by the trained rater to remove any distracting features of the original recordings, such as articulatory errors. Twenty-four untrained listeners rated the discourse samples using a short questionnaire that included questions for each sample about: topic maintenance, inclusion of unnecessary information, and the listener level of interest and attention. Questions for untrained listeners were based on operational definitions of global coherence and discourse quality respectively. These untrained ratings were compared to trained ratings of global coherence. Outcome measures were compared using non-parametric tests and a Spearman Rank Order test was also used to examine relationships among variables. Main Contribution: Untrained listeners’ ratings for topic maintenance and inclusion of unnecessary information were significantly different between trained low, medium, and high global coherence ratings. Topic maintenance and inclusion of unnecessary information were also both significantly correlated with global coherence. Untrained listeners’ ratings of their level of interest and attention for a sample were significantly different between trained medium-high and low-high global coherence ratings. Interest and attention ratings were also significantly correlated with ratings of global coherence. Conclusions: Untrained raters did differentiate between levels of global coherence using ratings of topic maintenance, inclusion of unnecessary information, and their level of attention and interest. Global coherence was also significantly correlated with the untrained ratings. These findings provide preliminary external validity for the global coherence scale and support its clinical utility
Nonsurgical management of ulnar collateral ligament injuries is tentatively successful in overhead athletes: A critical appraisal of case series

Since its inception, surgical management of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) is fairly standard; however, the invasive, costly, and time-intensive nature of UCL surgery may be restrictive to some athletes. Electronic databases were searched starting from the year 2013 to September 2018. Extracted data included frequencies of (a) return to play (RTP); (b) return to same level of play (RTSP); (c) athlete’s position; (d) complete reconstitution of the UCL; and (e) the location of ligament rupture (proximal or distal). Proportions of success/failure for selected outcomes were calculated. Additionally, an odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval [CI]) determined the association between tear location (proximal vs. distal) and nonsurgical success. A total of 169 athletes underwent nonsurgical management of UCL injury in the seven included studies. Sports included baseball, gymnastics, softball, hockey, volleyball, and tennis. Overall, 83% (n = 140) were able to RTP and 72% (n = 121) were able to RTSP. Those with proximal UCL tears had a RTSP rate of 82% (n = 56) compared to 42% (n = 13) of those with a distal tear. Proximal tears were associated with higher rates of successful outcomes in RTP and RTSP (OR = 6.5 [2.5,16.7], p \u3c .001). In baseball, 76% (n = 38) of pitchers were able to RTSP compared to 90% (n = 9) of position players. When visualized using MRI, 96% (n = 22) of athletes had full UCL reconstitution following nonsurgical management. Based on the pooled outcomes of included studies, nonsurgical management of a UCL injury was reasonably successful for RTP and RTSP rates in professional athletes, with a better chance of success for proximal tears compared to distal and incomplete tears compared to complete. The exploratory nature of utilizing nonsurgical management for UCL sprains in athletes, by way of the case series, appears to be fairly well established, but an upgrade in study design is warranted
Rapid, Phase-free Detection of Long Identity-by-Descent Segments Enables Effective Relationship Classification
© 2020 American Society of Human Genetics Identity-by-descent (IBD) segments are a useful tool for applications ranging from demographic inference to relationship classification, but most detection methods rely on phasing information and therefore require substantial computation time. As genetic datasets grow, methods for inferring IBD segments that scale well will be critical. We developed IBIS, an IBD detector that locates long regions of allele sharing between unphased individuals, and benchmarked it with Refined IBD, GERMLINE, and TRUFFLE on 3,000 simulated individuals. Phasing these with Beagle 5 takes 4.3 CPU days, followed by either Refined IBD or GERMLINE segment detection in 2.9 or 1.1 h, respectively. By comparison, IBIS finishes in 6.8 min or 7.8 min with IBD2 functionality enabled: speedups of 805–946× including phasing time. TRUFFLE takes 2.6 h, corresponding to IBIS speedups of 20.2–23.3×. IBIS is also accurate, inferring ≥7 cM IBD segments at quality comparable to Refined IBD and GERMLINE. With these segments, IBIS classifies first through third degree relatives in real Mexican American samples at rates meeting or exceeding other methods tested and identifies fourth through sixth degree pairs at rates within 0.0%–2.0% of the top method. While allele frequency-based approaches that do not detect segments can infer relationship degrees faster than IBIS, the fastest are biased in admixed samples, with KING inferring 30.8% fewer fifth degree Mexican American relatives correctly compared with IBIS. Finally, we ran IBIS on chromosome 2 of the UK Biobank dataset and estimate its runtime on the autosomes to be 3.3 days parallelized across 128 cores

The treatment of draft dodgers and miscarriages of justice by Argentine military courts provoked mobilisations by families, communities and the major political parties. An examination of the debates and discussions around these issues reveals a widespread sentiment that rarely questioned neither the right of the armed forces to draft young men nor the legitimacy of the armed forces. By adopting the language of patriotism and civic obligation, individual and community petitioners and politicians who represented them challenged the state\u27s broad claim of power over the bodies of young men from a reformist position. Military justice formed a critical platform through which citizens debated the meaning of citizenship and the place of the armed forces in society
