Martes Trece
Martes Trece is a blend of urban fantasy and contemporary fairy tale, told using folklore, mythology, and superstition from the Dominican Republic.
Aurelia has been keeping the fact she’s a bruja a secret from her husband, Yoni, because of his contentious beliefs toward the supernatural. However, she’s about to give him a crash course into what her life was like before they met when their newborn gets kidnapped on the order of a more powerful bruja. Her mother.
She’s spent the better part of her life escaping her past, running from fate, and hiding from her mother. But now, Aurelia must journey through Queens to apprehend her mother before she offers up Aurelia’s newborn to the boogeyman known as el Cuco. And she will do anything to stop that from happening. Even if it means once again becoming the bruja her mother conditioned her to become
Moving On/Moving With: Healing Transgenerational Trauma Through Dance/Movement Therapy With Iraqi-American Jews
Bicultural identifying people like Iraqi-American Jews have a unique cultural experience. This thesis discusses the mental health challenges that bicultural identifying people experience and distinguishes this identity from the immigrant experience, highlighting the experience of Iraqi- American Jews. This thesis also explores the causes for the transmission of trauma from one generation to the next as it relates to bicultural Americans. The thesis aims to outline why dance/movement therapy is a fitting treatment method for those experiencing intergenerational trauma like Iraqi-American Jews. This thesis suggests potential dance/movement therapy interventions to aid in symptom relief for those experiencing transgenerational trauma
Illustrated Choreography of Spirals
This independent project was created for the yearlong Anatomy component class in Dance. The author utilized movement practice, viewing video recordings, anatomical study and analysis, sketching and drawing, to develop and produce a detailed visual representation of Spirals, choreographed by Irene Dowd © 1991.
Spirals is a complex and comprehensive warm up and cool down choreographic sequence for dancers, built upon functional anatomy and neuromuscular training principles. During the fall semester and for the first eight weeks of the spring semester, the author learned and refined their performance of this material, as well as making anatomical drawings and engaging in movement analysis. Following the shift to off-campus instruction, the author chose to pursue in-depth study of Spirals through the creation of a visually rendered version. There are 92 individual images in pencil, which serve as specific directions for performance of the choreography.https://digitalcommons.slc.edu/undergrad_selectedworks/1007/thumbnail.jp
Exploration Of Patient Attitudes Toward Receiving Incidental Diagnoses Of Lysosomal Storage Disorders Through Expanded Carrier Screening
The increased prevalence of expanded carrier screening (ECS) has made it possible for individuals to receive incidental diagnoses of genetic conditions through prenatal or preconception screening that was originally intended to assess risk for genetic conditions in future offspring. The inclusion of genetic conditions with variable expressivity and late-onset phenotypes, such as certain lysosomal storage disorders, have increased the likelihood that this type of screening will result in an incidental diagnosis. Four participants from the lysosomal storage disorders program at NYU Langone Health were interviewed to elicit their psychological reaction to incidental diagnoses of Gaucher Disease Type 1, Fabry Disease and Late-onset Pompe Disease. Relevant themes include the quality of explanation of the diagnosed genetic condition, availability of support from medical providers, and consequences of the condition on aspects of daily living. Overall, participants believed that expanded carrier screening gave important information and recommended that providers responsible for ordering ECS or explaining results offer an appropriate level of education and compassion to their patients. Their responses reveal room for improvement in pre-test counseling, disclosure of incidental diagnoses, patient education during post-test counseling and referral services within the role of the genetic provider
Genetic Counselors\u27 Views Of Traits That Make For Effective Leaders
Genetic counseling is rapidly evolving as technology and services related to healthcare are developed and become a part of the healthcare industry. Because of its youth and rapid growth, there is currently no literature analyzing or describing leadership in genetic counseling as there is for nursing, surgical teams, or other more established fields of healthcare. Currently practicing genetic counselors were surveyed about their views of whether specific traits found to be valued in leaders in nursing were important in their bosses, institutional leaders, and genetic counseling professional society leaders. Likert scale responses were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics; qualitative responses to open-ended questions were analyzed using open coding. Nearly all traits previously endorsed as useful for nursing leaders were found to be applicable to leaders of genetic counselors. In particular, effective communication was found to be the most important trait for leaders at every level, and honesty/transparency was consistently suggested as being important in leaders. Approachability and supportiveness were perceived as important in direct supervisors. Institutional leaders were perceived as needing to be decision-makers. Participation in staff development was overall not perceived to be highly important
For a Dark-Skinned Girl: A Retrospective Analysis on The History Of Colorism in America From 1950 to 1990
For this study, I explored the trajectory of colorism from 1950 to 1990 through literature, film, poetry, and scholarly sources. I tracked the changes in the discussion and demonstrated repositioning of the narrative after the Black Power Movement from bias solely against darker skinned black women to include discrimination against lighter skinned black women. My findings suggest that colorism has been viewed predominantly as a dark-skinned women’s issue. Efforts to design an individualized approach towards color bias against lighter skinned black women and darker skinned black women, would be instrumental in capturing the challenges faced and reducing the separation associated with skin tone bias
Clinical Implementation of Polygenic Risk Scores For Cardiovascular Disease: An Assessment of Cardiovascular Genetic Counselors\u27 Knowledge and Opinions
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), a class of disorders that affect the heart or blood vessels, is a leading cause of death in the United States. Although CVD has a strong heritable component, a monogenic cause for disease can only be found in a few individuals. Recently, polygenic risk scores (PRS) have entered the market; these are single value estimates of the total genetic risk burden of a disease over multiple susceptibility variants (Garcia-Closas, 2016). PRS can stratify risk and identify at-risk individuals who would not be detected using current screening measures; however, presently no guidelines exist for their development or application. Although there are mixed opinions on the utility of PRS, in a consumer-driven marketplace the expansion of PRS into healthcare is inevitable. The current study aims to explore cardiovascular genetic counselors’ opinions and knowledge on the use of PRS for CVD. Forty-six genetic counselors practicing in the area of cardiovascular genetics responded to a survey which included an assessment of knowledge, opinions on ordering PRS and on PRS generally, ranking of obstacles to the clinical implementation of PRS, and an open-ended question. Knowledge on PRS was high overall, but there was a clear need for more education and training as many cardiovascular genetic counselors felt skeptical and unprepared. In addition, there were diverging opinions with regards to if and when a validated PRS should be ordered. Validation of PRS across ethnicities was identified as one of the most important issues to cardiovascular genetic counselors, and this group stated a great need for more evidence of clinical validity and utility in general. Before PRS for CVD are implemented in clinical practice, guidelines must be created which address who to order a PRS for, how to interpret and apply PRS in clinical care, and the limitations of these scores
Cultivating Curiosity and Collaboration: Mentalizing as a Modality of Intervention in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
Parents and caregivers who are able to understand their own mental states are better able to hold a child’s mental states in mind, an important consideration for moderating negative perceptions of ADHD behavior. In this thesis, I discuss how mentalizing-focused treatment for parents and caregivers strengthens attachment bonds in families where a child is diagnosed with ADHD. I explore the effectiveness of mentalizing-focused treatment to parents, some of whom experience difficulty in understanding their own mental states, and all of whom experience challenges in interpreting the intentions and mental states of their children, particularly in families where a child has been diagnosed with ADHD. In addition, I define how mentalizing relates to the important developmental theories, including attachment, as a means of promoting autonomy and resilience for a child as well as the potential negative effects when mentalizing breaks down
