Reflections on Space - Exploring Intercultural Creation in Space
Beginning with the materiality of space itself, this project emphasizes that choreography can use not only spatial features but also powerfully asks the following questions: How do creators consider the characteristics of space in the creative process? What is the relationship between the performance space of the theater and the fictional place evoked by the work? How do the behavioral norms of the audience change when the performance space changes? How does the performance space relate to history and society? From physical space to fictional space. After that, the concept of time is added to become a four-dimensional space. Then I combine my identity and experience to explore the cross-cultural creation of space
Impact of the Sarah Lawrence Genetic Counseling Introductory Fieldwork Simulation on the Self-Efficacy and Training of Students from the Classes of 2021-2023
While simulation is commonly used as a tool in the training of various medical professionals, more in depth analysis is needed on its use and impact in the training of genetic counselors. The purpose of this study was to begin to understand, from the student perspective, the impact of the Sarah Lawrence College Master of Science in Human Genetics (SLC MS HG) Introductory Fieldwork Simulation (IF Sim) on self-efficacy, skills acquisition, and utilization of skills learned in simulation in future practice for the classes of 2021-2023. After a pilot study was completed, 23 semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted from participants from the SLC classes of 2021-2023 who participated in IF Sim. Guided by the research questions and emergent research design, a code book was developed and used to code all transcripts. The codes were then grouped into categories based on similar ideas. Themes from within these categories emerged that fit together under three overarching concepts, including impact on participants’ self-efficacy, skills acquisition, and utilization of skills learned in simulation in future practice, with multiple supporting themes under each. Nearly all participants reported an increase in self-efficacy as a result of IF Sim. Additionally, participants reported they were able to develop a multitude of genetic counseling skills, which combined with the increased confidence, made them feel more prepared for their first clinical rotation. Future research includes using this study as a starting point in exploring how to optimize simulation in the training of genetic counselors, as well as replicating this study at other institutions to create generalizable results about simulation programs in other genetic counseling training programs. Additionally, it would be helpful to evaluate whether self-efficacy is a good means of evaluating the effectiveness of simulation in genetic counseling programs
Simulated Patient Case Development for Cultural Competency Training of Genetic Counseling Students
One of the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC) practice-based
competencies for genetic counselors is “Apply genetic counseling skills in a culturally
responsive and respectful manner to all clients.” Yet, the extent and approach in which cultural competency training is incorporated into genetic counseling training programs varies greatly. Simulated patients have been increasingly used in genetic counseling training to help students practice foundational skills in a low stakes environment. The goal of this project is to develop a clinical case for simulation that can be used as an intervention for cultural competency training of genetic counseling students. Christensen’s workbook and Archer’s culture bump theory were used as guides for case development. Focus groups and an individual interview were conducted to assess the case for realism, clarity, and its ability to meet the stated objectives. Participants agreed the case details were realistic to their experiences and provided learners with an opportunity to explore their cultural competency skills. Results of the study support that Christensen’s case development workbook can be used to develop simulated patient cases in genetic counseling training, specifically in cultural competence training. Overall, the participants emphasized the variability in what a student can learn from completing a session with this case. This case has the potential to benefit all genetic counseling students, and the learning outcomes can differ based on the learners’ experiences, goals, and approaches to the session
Four Magically Interspersed Stories
Abstract
Magically-infused stories have always been a subject of immense interest to me. As a young child, I found that epic adventure and fantastic powers produced a fine effect on my appreciation for life. I wished to be empowered like these unbelievably dynamic characters, so immersed in their hugely significant and pressing plots. That being said, these four stories are all beginnings of what feel more like worlds than short works. In different ways, I thought to empower otherwise damaged protagonists. Asphodel is infertile; Georgette is killed; Eurclesic is blocked; Seria is degraded. Asphodel is given power enough to revolt; Georgette’s dormant powers flame in the face of tragedy; Eurclesic is enchanted by his Tutor; and Seria is crowned as the reborn messianic leader. What’s really unusual with these sagas is that, no matter how enamored I am by the pure fantasy of it all, they wind up centering around critiques of society. Pain and hurt, it seems, are the key point of reflection, where these wild tales end up taking shape, growing form. The injuries are not obvious, so much so that only each protagonist seems to embody the full thrust, while the surrounding characters never find a way to exactly alleviate that. These stories, I do think, have a lot to do with inner feelings across traumas and commitments in life, and the inherent misunderstandings and deviations that follow from even, what to the naked eye, is but a regular existence. The absurd spins out from a pre-existing order
