The Role of Intangible Assets in Shaping Firm Value
This study introduces a new metric to evaluate a firm\u27s intangible asset intensity, focusing on its ability to generate revenue from nonphysical assets. It finds a strong positive correlation between firm performance and both internally generated and externally acquired intangible assets. Firms with high intangible intensity outperform peers by 3% annually. The oversight of intangible assets is identified as a factor in value stocks\u27 underperformance. Rigorous tests, including endogeneity checks, confirm these firms exhibit superior accounting quality, labour investment efficiency and acquisition returns. Large-Bore Mechanical Thrombectomy Versus Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis in the Management of Intermediate-Risk Pulmonary Embolism: Primary Results of the PEERLESS Randomized Controlled Trial
BACKGROUND: There are a lack of randomized controlled trial data comparing outcomes of different catheter-based interventions for intermediate-risk pulmonary embolism.
METHODS: PEERLESS is a prospective, multicenter, randomized controlled trial that enrolled 550 patients with intermediate-risk pulmonary embolism with right ventricular dilatation and additional clinical risk factors randomized 1:1 to treatment with large-bore mechanical thrombectomy (LBMT) or catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT). The primary end point was a hierarchal win ratio composite of the following (assessed at the sooner of hospital discharge or 7 days after the procedure): (1) all-cause mortality, (2) intracranial hemorrhage, (3) major bleeding, (4) clinical deterioration and/or escalation to bailout, and (5) postprocedural intensive care unit admission and length of stay. Assessments at the 24-hour visit included respiratory rate, modified Medical Research Council dyspnea score, New York Heart Association classification, right ventricle/left ventricle ratio reduction, and right ventricular function. End points through 30 days included total hospital stay, all-cause readmission, and all-cause mortality.
RESULTS: The primary end point occurred significantly less frequently with LBMT compared with CDT (win ratio, 5.01 [95% CI, 3.68–6.97]; P24 hours (19.3% versus 64.5%). There were no significant differences in mortality, intracranial hemorrhage, or major bleeding between strategies or in a secondary win ratio end point including the first 4 components (win ratio, 1.34 [95% CI, 0.78–2.35]; P=0.30). CONCLUSIONS: PEERLESS met its primary end point in favor of LBMT compared with CDT in treatment of intermediate-risk pulmonary embolism. LBMT had lower rates of clinical deterioration and/or bailout and postprocedural intensive care unit use compared with CDT, with no difference in mortality or bleeding
02 - Habitat Preference of Ambrosia Beetles (Curculionidae) Using Bottle Traps in Southeastern Virginia
Ambrosia beetles attack host trees by boring into the stem and infecting the tree with a symbiotic fungus. Infected trees suffer damage to the vascular system which often results in tree mortality. We examined whether different species of native and invasive ambrosia beetles prefer different habitats by placing bottle traps in riparian areas near streams and in forested habitats in several locations in southeastern Virginia. Numerous ambrosia beetles were collected in the traps, and we related ambrosia beetle species to the habitat in which it was collected
05 - Freeze Severity and Black Mangrove Growth: Influence of Plant Origin on Side Shoot Development
Despite a reduction in freeze events and subsequent expansion in the southeastern US, freeze impacts still play a critical role in mangrove morphology and local range limits. Freeze events can impair growth, limit survival, and commonly prompts side shoot development. This study examines the relationship between plant origin, freeze severity, and side shoot development in black mangroves. Our findings show that plants from each location exhibited distinct morphological responses, with similarities more closely linked to environmental conditions rather than geographic proximity. Our work offers insights into thermal tolerance thresholds and implications for mangrove stature in coastal wetlands
10 - Assessing the impact of mineral and organic sunscreens on the life history of a benthic marine invertebrate
Organic and mineral sunscreens have become emergent anthropogenic pollutants in marine environments due to increased use in recreational activities and their presence in wastewater discharge. Marine invertebrates have shown sensitivities to both forms of sunscreen, such as reduced reproductive success and survival. Despite knowledge of these effects, few experiments have investigated the impacts of different application forms of these sunscreens or their simultaneous presence. In this experiment, we will investigate the impacts of six organic sunscreens - with 3% Avobenzone, 15% Homosalate, 5% Octinoxate, and 10% Octocylene as active ingredients - and six 24% zinc oxide mineral sunscreens on the survival and fecundity of the marine annelid Ophyrotrocha labronica over a week of exposure. Individuals will be exposed to 12 treatment combinations of sunscreen type (organic and inorganic), application (spray or lotion), and concentration (0 mg/L, 5 mg/L, and 50 mg/L). Two mixed treatments will be included in the experiment: one combining a randomly chosen inorganic spray sunscreen with an organic lotion, and the other combining an organic spray with an inorganic lotion, tested at a concentration of 50 mg/L. Sunscreen active ingredient types were chosen from a survey of vendors conducted to identify the most prevalent ingredients. We predict higher mortality and reduced fecundity at higher concentrations and combined treatments. Additionally, we expect greater mortality from organic sunscreens due to bulk zinc oxide’s lessened bioavailability in marine waters. Our study will provide a more realistic account of the detrimental effects of sunscreen use on marine benthic species
41 - Developing Nanosecond Pulsed Plasma Sources for Organic Pollutants Removal from Water
The feasibility of a nanosecond pulsed plasma-based technology for degradation of organic pollutants such as Rhodamine-B (Rh-B) and Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in water is evaluated in this study using strip line-like or cylindrical electrode configurations. Sliding discharges or dielectric barrier discharges are generated between the anode and cathode separated by various gases such as air or argon and powered by 200-300 ns, \u3e15 kV pulses at 500 Hz. The Rh-B and/or PFOA decontamination yield were evaluated for multiple cycles of treatment for air or argon. Over 90% degradation of Rh-B was obtained after 9 cycles of treatment of the sliding discharge operated at 0.12 J per pulse or an average power of 60 W using ambient air as the working gas. The impact of the voltage, working gas, and initial concentration of the organic pollutants on the degradation rate and energy efficiency are discussed. Effects of the electrode configurations on the types of the discharge and the resulted decontamination yield are also discussed
55 - Exploring Associations Between Medical Education, Coping Skills, and Stress Among Pre-Med Students, Medical Students, and Medical Residents
The increased prevalence of stress within medical education is of growing concern. Prior research has shown that medical students have increased stress levels on a global scale (Atkinson, 2020). This is particularly concerning because prolonged periods of increased stress can increase the risk of serious health issues such as heart disease, cancer, and strokes (Birk, 2023). The current study aims to obtain information on relevant psychological factors that may improve our understanding on how stress levels and coping skills progress throughout medical education. Specifically, pre-med students, medical students, and medical residents will be recruited across ODU’s campuses. They will be asked to complete several psychological batteries and complete a N-Back task to obtain a deeper understanding of stress levels, coping skills, and their impact the student’s working memory. Through data analyzation, the research team will gain a better understanding of how individuals in different phases of the future physician\u27s journey handle stress. The prevalence and dangers regarding long-term stress (Alizadehgoradel et al., 2019; Birk, 2023) make early interventions within the students journey essential to mitigating negative effects as they continue their career. Additionally, as well-being efforts increase among graduate medical education, exploring a positive progression in students coping skills will provide information about the efficacy of these efforts. Lastly, the ability to compare each type of student and their stressors/stress levels will also allow further specifications as to how to best help learners at each academic level
57 - Forgetti: 3D Printing Spaghetti Made Right - Using Artificial Intelligence to Identify Real Time Mistake During Additive Manufacturing
Fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing is a popular additive manufacturing process, but it often faces challenges such as print failures, which can result in wasted time and materials. Existing failure detection solutions offer limited or proprietary models that hinder open accessibility and customization. This paper introduces Forgetti, an open-source, AI-based software solution designed to detect and respond to 3D print failures. Drawing inspiration from projects such as Pytorch-Wildlife, Forgetti aims to address the lack of public datasets by allowing for the fine-tuning of detection models on diverse failure scenarios. The paper outlines the methodology used to collect, label, and train a model for failure detection, utilizing Ultralytics and Svelte. The software integrates with a web interface to provide real-time failure alerts and system diagnostics, enhancing operational efficiency and security in both hobbyist and industrial environments. This work contributes to the growing need for accessible, customizable, and community-driven solutions in the 3D printing industry

There are a broad range of socioeconomic factors that can impact life expectancy, such as income, education, employment, access to healthcare, and more. Life expectancy and the factors that influence it can vary widely between relatively small geographies. For localities to minimize health disparities, a visualization tool can be helpful to discover correlations between social determinants of health and life expectancy outcomes.
The goal of the Virginia Life Expectancy Dashboard is to create visualizations and draw correlations between health factors and life expectancy at the census tract level in Virginia.
The Virginia Life Expectancy Dashboard was created using the GIS applications ArcGIS Pro and Experience Builder. The data sources for this project include the U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Small-Area Life Expectancy Estimates Project, Virginia Health Opportunity Index, and CDC Social Vulnerability Index.
The Virginia Life Expectancy Dashboard is an online experience that features an interactive map displaying life expectancy and related social determinants of health at the census tract level. Additional functionalities include downloadable data tables, filtering by attribute, an interactive scatterplot visualization, and toggleable map layers.
This tool can be applied by local governments, medical providers, and public service organizations to fine tune their health care practices and goals to properly address disparities within their communities
81 - Mentorship and Collaboration in Neurosciences
Efforts in neuroscience research are crucial to identifying better diagnoses and treatments for neurological diseases. The schools of medicine and their neuroscientific community should provide research mentorship in medical education, particularly in its early stages, as it presents an opportunity to enhance diversity. A unique approach to an informal longitudinal mentorship in translational neuroscience research is proposed here. The mentorship experience is extended beyond a summer project, to allow for long-term benefits such as the opportunity for students to build research skills, grow a project over time, and learn to collaborate with colleagues productively. The mentorship approach is based on role modeling, group coaching, peer-to-peer mentorship, performance coaching, leadership coaching, and advocacy protection mentor network. A key component of this approach is collaboration, which enhances research productivity and professional development. Our initiatives span regional (Eastern Virginia Medical School, Old Dominion University, Hampton University, Norfolk State University), national (Hackensack Meridian, Mayo Clinic), and international (Argentina, Belgium, Italy, Georgia) partnerships, providing students with access to interdisciplinary research projects, publications, and conference opportunities. It is evident that this type of mentorship experience, running in parallel with the mentee\u27s formal educational activities, significantly enhances the student’s research skills and time management. It also contributes to a sense of ownership and commitment to their research in translational neuroscience, offering hope for the future of neuroscience research. A longitudinal mentorship approach including opportunities for institutional collaboration enhances students’ research skills, confidence, and professional growth, thus strengthening the next generation of neuroscientists dedicated to advancing translational neuroscience
