This research focuses on developing the enantiomer of the left-winged fragment of one of the triterpenes using readily available farnesol with two key steps.     40 - Design, Fabrication, and Installation of Morphing Control Surfaces for Small-Scale UAS

    Morphing control surface technology, inspired by organic structures and compliant mechanisms, offers significant potential for enhancing the aerodynamic efficiency and performance of unmanned aerial systems (UAS). Despite these benefits, its adoption has been hindered by complexities in design, manufacturing, and installation, particularly when compared to traditional flap systems. This research explores the design, fabrication, and integration of morphing control surfaces for small-scale UAS using additive manufacturing techniques. To reduce costs and streamline the design process, fused deposition modeling (FDM) additive manufacturing was employed for component fabrication. An off-the-shelf Horizon Sport Cub S2 served as the testing platform, modified with a Speedybee F405 Wing flight controller and a custom modular wing. The modular wing incorporated a novel connection system tailored for the rapid testing and validation of morphing control surfaces, simplifying installation while maintaining flexibility for iterative design improvements. The design phase revealed challenges unique to morphing surfaces, which require specialized tools and methods for optimization. Conversely, FDM printing significantly simplified manufacturing, yielding high-quality, reproducible components. However, installation complexities were exacerbated by the increased strain on electrical components caused by flexible 3D-printed structures, potentially impacting their lifespan and reliability. Successful test flights demonstrated that the morphing control surfaces performed comparably to conventional flap systems and are a viable alternative for small-scale UAS applications. Further testing and optimization are necessary to enhance performance, durability, and ease of integration, paving the way for broader adoption of morphing technologies in UAS platforms

    56 - Body Composition Change in Women Treated for Breast Cancer before and 24 months after treatment

    Background: Breast cancer (BC) treatments including chemotherapy and radiation can alter body composition leading to significant changes of subcutaneous and visceral adiposity. Increases in fat impact physical health and influence survivorship outcomes such as quality of life and metabolic health. We hypothesized that breast cancer treatment could induce increases in body composition, especially abdominal fats. Objective: Investigate body composition change in women treated for breast cancer before and 24 months after treatment. Methods: Case-control cohort study design that included 29 BC patients treated with anthracycline chemotherapy and 37 comparators without cancer.To assess body composition, abdominal MRIs were obtained at baseline and 24 months after treatment. A blinded, paired read of the MRIs was performed to assess body fat depots including Subcutaneous (SQ), Intra-Abdominal (IA) divided into Intro-Peritoneal (IP), and Retro-Peritoneal (RP) fat using the SliceOmatic software program. Results: The descriptive statistics are age, weight, height. The study found no significant changes in fat distribution outcomes among breast cancer patients over a 24-month period.     70 - Unmeasured Confounding in Meta-Analyses of Observational Studies Evaluating Maternal Periodontitis and Adverse Birth Outcomes

    Background: Maternal periodontitis has been consistently linked to adverse birth outcomes (ABOs). However, a causal relationship is not established due to potential unmeasured confounding factors in observational studies and inconclusive results from randomized controlled trials. This study aimed to assess the impact of unmeasured confounding factors in meta-analyses examining associations between maternal periodontitis and preterm birth (PTB) or low birth weight (LBW). Methods: PubMed and MEDLINE, Cochrane, Embase, and Google Scholar were searched for systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies between 2002 and 2023. Systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies were included if either PTB or LBW were the outcome and were published in English. The E-value analogue method was used to evaluate possible unmeasured confounding effects in random effects meta-analyses. Results: 62 original studies from 9 meta-analyses met the inclusion criteria. In relation to the exposure and outcome, the random-effects meta-analysis showed that even with an unmeasured confounder having a relative risk (RR) of 3.00, 80% of cohort studies evaluating PTB and 90% evaluating LBW would have an RR\u3e2.00. Conclusions: Associations between maternal periodontitis and ABOs in observational studies appear robust to unmeasured confounding factors, supporting the hypothesis that maternal periodontitis is causally related to ABOs

    Phishing attacks have been the number one leading cause of identity theft and financial theft since 1990. The internet is one of the leading places where individuals’ identity is stolen. Many businesses and government agencies have been at risk of cyber phishing attacks from foreign countries. Attacks on Several U.S. federal government agencies have been hit in a global cyberattack by Russian cybercriminals that exploit a vulnerability in widely used software, according to a top us cybersecurity agency (Lyngaas, Government hit cyber-attacks, 2023). Phishing attacks are cybercrimes where one or many individuals steal sensitive information like passwords, credit card information, and even social security numbers. There are many different types of phishing attacks such as spear phishing, email phishing, smishing, and whaling. Spear phishing is a type of phishing campaign that targets a specific person or group and often includes information known to be of interest to the target. They attempt to acquire sensitive information or access to a computer system by sending counterfeit messages that seem to be legit. (uni.gov) Phishing attacks have ruined many businesses and families. They exploit the very vulnerability that makes human communication seamless and trustworthy. These attacks leverage psychological manipulation, preying on emotions such as fear, urgency, or curiosity. In my Research paper, I will discuss different types of phishing attacks and how we can prevent them or take proper precautions to avoid falling victim to these attacks

    Fostering Creativity Through Competition Within Game Design

    As secretary of Old Dominion University\u27s Video Game Design & Development Club, one of my goals is to help create opportunities for my peers to demonstrate their talents. This had led me to hosting the ODU Serious Games Games Jam competition in the Fall 2024 semester and the Spring 2025 semester. These competitions allowed students to create games within a short timeframe that were specifically designed to have a meaningful impact, such as by being educational or persuasive. During my presentation, I seek to detail and explain the logistics that went into hosting such large scale events all by myself. I will share the importance that these events have had with helping Old Dominion University\u27s game design program grow, and the opportunities that these events have created for the students

    Examining Impacts of Collegiate Recovery Programs on Community College Student Success

    The purpose of this study is to comprehensively assess the impact of collegiate recovery programs (CRPs) on community college (CC) students navigating substance abuse recovery. Researchers explore how participation influences students\u27 perceptions navigating their college experience, recovery capital scores, and personal understanding and evolution of the concept of recovery capital. The study examines impacts of CRPs in community colleges, thereby supporting students in their dual pursuit of academic success and sustainable recovery. Analysis will enhance the understanding of the effectiveness of CRPs in community colleges and contribute to the development of more tailored and impactful recovery support services. This research used a mixed-method, quasi-experimental approach (Chenoweth et al., 2016) using the Brief Assessment of Recovery Capital (BARC-10) tool and a unique, 18-question survey about student participants experiences for quantitative data, and an eight question, open-ended narrative exit survey. Ajzen’s (1985) theory of planned behavior (TPB) is the theoretical framework. The literature review in this study focused upon collegiate recovery, recovery capital, the methodology and research design for this study, and the potential impact of the expansion of these services into the CC sector. Additionally, literature on the TPB and intersectionality will be addressed, as well as the alignment between the missions of CCs and CRPs. Despite the growing amount of research on drug and alcohol policy and treatment methods (Ashford, Brown, et al., 2018b), the social theories of recovery and social capital (Cloud & Granfield, 2008; Hennessy, 2017), grounded theory research on people in recovery (Vest et al., 2023), and some macro studies on collegiate recovery at four-year schools (ARHE, 2022), there is little research on collegiate recovery at the CC level or for students in recovery. With the growth of a national criminal justice rehabilitation model, drug courts and alternative/non-punitive sentencing for non-violent offenders, and expanded Pell-eligibility, more people in recovery can attend college (Gallagher, 2015). There are similarities in the general missions of community colleges and the collegiate recovery. CRPs are broadly defined as a cohort of college students on a college campus who are in active recovery from substance use disorder (SUD) who participate in a mutual support system based on the college campus (Laudet et al., 2015). Recovery capital is the entirety of all resources, internal and external, that can be utilized to sustain recovery from SUD (Cloud & Granfield, 2008). Each academic year, more CRPs are created to support students in recovery. Current literature is modest compared to other student services or mental health initiatives but indicates that a CRP can improve the effort of engaging, retaining, and building the recovery capital of students. Since CCs are associated positively with being a springboard out of poverty, building stronger communities, and are inherently engaged in regional problem solving (Baldwin, 2017; Mellow & Heelan, 2015; Nevarez et al., 2013; Wood & Palmer, 2013), naming a system that helps grow equity, increases access to academics and workforce development, supports the local community, and strives for academic excellence can potentially describe both community college and collegiate recovery

    Evaluation of Access to Cell Phone for Healthcare Among the Homeless

    Purpose: Despite the growth of telehealth, vulnerable populations and the homeless are still disproportionately affected by a lack of access to equitable healthcare. There is limited research regarding the accessibility of cell phones for the homeless. This study\u27s purpose is to evaluate access to cell phones and connectivity (cellular data plans and/or Wi-Fi) among the homeless to assess their ability to participate in telehealth or other medical services. Methods: A convenience sample of 100 homeless participants accessing a social services organization (SSO) were surveyed to assess their access to cell phones, cellular data plans, and Wi-Fi. Surveys were conducted verbally by the researcher to alleviate literacy concerns. The data will be combined with that from a pilot study conducted at a different SSO to increase the study population and enhance generalizability. Results: While this study is ongoing, preliminary results from the pilot study indicate 69% of respondents had a phone, though the majority went without a phone for at least one month during the prior year. Most had smartphones, with 30% indicating they were Medicaid eligible. The most common indications for inability to use their phone were the cost of the device or mobile plan, lack of data, and inability to charge their phone. Additionally, 43% indicated never using their phone for healthcare services. Implications: Cell phones and connectivity are essential in today’s healthcare environment. Evaluating the access of the homeless may influence policymakers to invest in providing phones and connectivity to promote access to virtual care and enhance healthcare outcomes. Identifying barriers to cell phone use will further enhance operability and access to care. It has been proposed at the federal level that data used for healthcare should not be “counted” in limited data plans. This research may support that proposal. Short Description Homeless individuals are disproportionately affected by a lack of access to equitable healthcare. Cell phones may be an avenue to increase access to care. They may be used for telehealth, medication monitoring, appointment reminders, and more. Little is known about access to cell phones, data plans, and/or Wi-Fi among the homeless. This poster will highlight access to cell phones and connectivity as well as barriers to use.     Assessment of Submarine Groundwater Discharge and its Role as a Nutrient Source to the West Florida Shelf Using Radium Isotopes

    Submarine groundwater discharges (SGD) can impart strong chemical signatures upon coastal waters and provide elevated levels and/or altered forms of macronutrients and trace metals. Over the oligotrophic West Florida Shelf (WFS), SGD may be an important boundary source for dissolved nitrogen (TDN) and phosphorus (TDP). Nitrogen is a limiting nutrient on the WFS and its distribution has a considerable effect on phytoplankton communities, including the toxic red tide-forming dinoflagellate Karenia brevis and nitrogen-fixing diazotrophs such as Trichodesmium species that also influence N distribution. However, the fluxes and variability of these crucial nutrients to the WFS are currently poorly constrained, with much of the required N and P for bloom formation and maintenance as of yet unaccounted for. The first step to assessing the SGD potential input to the WFS is to quantify and characterize the SGD discharging onto the shelf. Here, we used radium isotopes (223Ra, 224Ra, 226Ra, 228Ra) as tracers to estimate the rate of SGD into the West Florida Shelf. A mass balance of 226Ra (t1/2 = 1600 y) was constructed from two cross-shelf cruises in February and July of 2023 as part of GEOTRACES Process Study GApr18. During both seasons, highest 226Ra activities were found nearest to the shore. In February the highest activities were concentrated around the mouth of Tampa Bay, and in July they were found about 60 km further south. Preliminary results indicate an area-normalized discharge of 0.5-1.9 cm d-1 in February and 0.6-2.1 cm d-1 in July to the WFS, across an area bounded by the 50 m isobath and representing 160 km of shoreline. This is similar in magnitude to other studies of the shelf and its estuaries, but notably recirculated SGD is 2-3 orders of magnitude higher in flux compared to discharge from four major rivers into Tampa Bay. Latitudinally, three major coastal and submarine aquifer systems are expressed in the region; spatial and seasonal variations in Ra activities of groundwater from three transects of offshore wells will help assess the aquifers’ contribution to shelf chemistry. Using these estimates of SGD rates and the measured submarine groundwater composition, the magnitude of SGD as a source of nutrients and metals, especially nitrogen and phosphorus, will be considered
