Low Socioeconomic Status Negatively Impacts Field-Test Battery in College Aged Women
Low socioeconomic status (SES) has been shown to increase risk factors of health disparities. Likewise, field tests are often used as a practical way to determine disease risk. PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of SES on cardiovascular health and physical fitness among female D2 university students. METHODS: 249 college-aged women were recruited and split into six groups based on their parents’ reported income. The six SES groups are as follows: Group 1 (n=27, 32K); Group 2 (n=45, 60K); Group 3 (n=63, 100K); Group 4 (n=51, 150K); Group 5 (n=26, 250K); Group 6 (n=8, $250K+). A battery of field tests was conducted, including weight-height ratio (WtHR), blood pressure (BP), body fat percentage (BF%), waist-to-hip ratio (WtoH), handgrip strength (HG), push-ups (PU), sit-ups (SU), body mass index (BMI), heart rate recovery (HRR), and fitness capacity (VO2max). RESULTS: Compared to all SES groups, women in the lowest SES group had higher WtHR (P\u3c0.06), BF% (P\u3c0.03), BMI (P\u3c0.004), but lower VO2max (P\u3c0.04). Lowest SES also showed lower PU to mid-SES groups (P=0.04), SU (P=0.03), as well as higher HRR compared to mid- and high-SES (P\u3c0.04). However, there was no difference in BP, WtoH, or HG between groups (P\u3e0.05). CONCLUSION: College aged women in the lowest SES group exhibited worse health outcomes compared to those of higher SES. Thus, low familial SES seems to negatively affect health outcomes in college aged women. Further investigation on how to overcome SES health disparities is warranted

Home of the Brave Book Study Assignment Description
Individuals lead storied lives, and everyone has a story to tell. Our stories can be shared orally and documented in print. Often, learners are exposed to stories through novels and other trade books. Teacher educators may benefit from using the stories in novels and trade books as case studies in preservice teacher preparation course. This assignment description outlines how to use the novel, Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate, as a case study to contextualize and understand the lived story of an individual learning a second language and living in a new country. Through the novel, preservice teachers experience the dilemmas faced and celebrations experienced as faced by the protagonist, Kek. Case studies are an effective teaching strategy for students in teacher education. Willems and Gonzalez-DeHass (2017) assert that case studies are a “vehicle to prepare preservice teacher for future classroom decision making” (p. ix). Further, Gorski and Pothini (2018) stated “case method’s effectiveness in deepening critical thinking abilities, problem-solving skills, and other competencies in professionals from a variety of fields” and allow us to “muddle through the gray areas [practical solutions to complex problems] by considering all that makes them gray” (p. 6).https://digitalcommons.pittstate.edu/oer-teaching/1011/thumbnail.jp
